imagine how good nature of the beast would be if mahariel was from zathrian’s clan. what if you were raised as a wide-eyed orphan looking up to your wise protective keeper who seems to have rediscovered your ancestors’ immortality? what if he was a father figure to you to some extent but always held you somewhat at arm’s length and is shockingly cold when he allows duncan to take you away whether you like it or not? what if you only later realise that the reason for this was a desperate and unsuccessful attempt to numb his heart to another tragedy like the loss of his children? what if you discovered his dark secret during the course of the quest and had to choose between accepting the reality and following his path of protective vengeance or bringing peace and ending the curse but at the cost of sacrificing his life? now THAT would compel me
