It's still going on!

I just learned that clouds above the Arctic are made of liquid water desire being -40C, not because of the air pressure, but because there's hardly any other particles up there for them to nucleate around. But it's so difficult to fly up there with all the different kinds of sensors you need to study these particles, so the US government is one of the very free organizations that can fund this kind of research into the front lines of climate change.

If you consume fanfic on ao3 and are 18+ and American I need you to lock in and call your senators saying you oppose a federal porn ban. This would effectively ban ao3 and being queer in public, among many other things, due to the intentionally vague language of the bill. I’m counting on queer tumblr and fandom tumblr to help me get the word out that you have to call your senators

My followers know I hate talking about politics and current events, and generally refuse to do so, but this is important.

A bill has been introduced in the US that would make all pornography a federal crime. Owning it. Creating it. Distributing it.

Under this law, fanart of nude characters would be a federal crime.

Under this law, depictions of homosexuality or simply being transgender, would be considered pornography and a federal crime.

This bill is not going to pass.

However, the reason for this bill is to continue to push the "overton window". The reason for this bill is to make banning pornography seem more and more normal to everyone until they can actually do that.

And remember, they consider depictions of gay characters and transgenders characters "pornography" in any context, including platonic.

They have been working on this for a decade now and it has been working.

If you are one of the people in fandom who thinks that "nasty" porn on AO3 should be banned because it's "icky" or "immoral", then this mental scam is working on you.

Censorship is never about protecting people.

Censorship is always about control.

Do not let the rising moral panic affect your mind and make you weak to propaganda that lets others control you and control what you watch and read.

Do not fall for the scam.

When they say they are going to ban "pornography" it means they're going to ban anything they don't like by calling it "pornography" and they don't like you!!

The bill was introduced by Utah Sen. Mike Lee, a longtime ally of the Heritage Foundation, which authored Project 2025.

Since it's so early in it's existence, we don't have resources that give scripts and auto call about this bill yet. Call your reps and let them know we are preparing to kill this before it hits any voting. Tell everyone, send letters, emails, and make sure your reps know you don't want this to exist for even one more day.

Fanfic is a free hobby.

It's one of the last few things we can have as a society that's free. You can engage, for free. People give you things (art, stories, etc), for free.

Don't buy into the consummerism just because it's everywhere else.

You don't have to consume everything you interact with. You don't have to use things, just because they exist.

You're allowed (still, for now), to have things that are enjoyable for free.

Do you realise how insane the world is? We don't have many places where we can just be, for free anymore, but ao3 is. Did you notice we don't have ads in ao3? We don't have pop ups? Where ELSE do we not have that?

Where else can you just go and not have to wait for a commercial to be over or for ads to be on the sidelines?

I don't think the younger people understand, but the whole of internet used to be like this. YouTubers would do Youtube for free, just because. You couldn't monetise your internet presence before.

Ao3 is like a little preserved corner of the internet where the old internet used to be, and it's being attacked by people who do not understand that free things are allowed to exist without judgment.

Please don't ruin this for us.

Some of us need it.

I did a websearch to see what new developments there may be, as I don't recall hearing anything from the defense for some weeks. According to a rundown of the whole case at Yahoo News:

Since his arrest, Mangione has made multiple court appearances, but his actual trial has yet to be scheduled. His legal team has pushed back against prosecutors and argued that his rights were violated during the arrest. Mangione’s attorneys also claimed he wasn’t read his Miranda rights and that DNA evidence was collected illegally. ... On April 1, 2025, Attorney General Pam Bondi released a statement announcing that federal prosecutors would seek the death penalty for Mangione. ... However, in legal documents obtained by In Touch, Mangione’s legal team says the death penalty push is more political theater than a pursuit of justice. In a new motion filed on April 11, 2025, the defense argued that Bondi had ignored standard death penalty protocol. Mangione’s next federal court date is set for April 18, 2025, followed by a state hearing on June 26.

So. On the 18th it apparently developed - that is, I first saw this talked about - that the search warrant, under which the evidence against Mangione was planted obtained, was timestamped many hours after the search was conducted, which under the laws of evidence-gathering invalidates any evidence for use against him.
