"criticizing hoyoverse for their character design skills is just like criticizing an artist for their art style" LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER. as someone who really really loves character design as an art form (though i am admitted in no way a professional) hoyoverse fucking SUCKS at character design. and it is 100% caused by their crippling anti-Blackness and same face same body syndrome. the anti-Blackness they genuinely do not have an excuse for (no i do not care that they are Chinese) and honestly i feel it speaks for itself with the fact most of their characters are literally whiter than actual white people. but like i NEED to fucking rant abt the same face same body syndrome and how i feel like it causes a lot of the othet problems i have with their character designs.

like i UNDERSTAND that they have same face same body syndrome bc it's easier to just reuse the same few base models for every character but like. they are a fucking multi-million dollar company. they absolutely have the resources to give each character a fully unique model, which admittedly is something they've started leaning to a bit more with characters like varka and varessa and most of zzz to my knowledge (i don't play zzz) but fucking still. "oh but rrrratchet it takes longer to do that" FUCKING SO? i do not care????? i would rather have 6 really awesome character designs in a version than 12 completely forgettable ones?? not to mention the other problem of having so many characters with only a handful of them actually being relavent but that's unrelated.

and how do they make up for all their characters having the same face and same body? BY CROWDING THE DESIGN WITH UNNECESSARY AND DISTRACTING DETAIL OF COURSE. i understand that they're 3d models so no one is having to sit there and animate everything by hand so the designs can afford to be a little more complex. i don't hate that at all, i actually think that's one of the awesome things about 3d digital animation! it's just hoyo designs always have so much going on that i am overwhelmed at best and it completely ruins the characters shapes and silhouette at worst. absolutely almost no hoyo characters pass the silhouette or "can a 3 yearold draw this and still have it be recognizable" tests. like idk i do on occasion like the extra level of detail and i do have to say hoyo is REALLY good at encorperating motifs into their designs (like tartaglia being obviously at first glance a rusted/bloodied blade and slightly less obviously a dying whale, both things that work very well with his character and story, sorry to use my favorite as an example i am biased) but fucking come on.

not to mention the detached sleeves/weird collar thing/miniskirt/heels curse istg one more design with all four of these elements and i kms and take all of u with me. i really feel like this became a BIG problem at least in genshin (which i am most familiar with) in nod krai/post natlan cuz it used to be we'd get the occasional character like that but now it feels like since skirk basically every female character has it. like i get personal preference and stylistic choice but when like a third of the cast has it and it doesn't even fucking make sense with the character (their personality, their job/hobbies, where they live, etc.) it is objectively lazy and bad character design. "oh but rrrratchet long skirts are harder to animate" THEY HAVE BEEN DOING TS. FOR OVER A DECADE. AND THEY'RE, AND I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, A MULTI MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY. THEY CAN PUT LONG SKIRTS IN THEIR GAMES AND INFACT THEY FUCKING HAVE BEFORE WITH NPCS AND CHARACTERS LIKE BARBRA AND YUNJIN. SAME WITH THE HEELS THING THAT IK UR GONNA BRING UP. and i mean this is just personal opinion but the collar thing is ugly.

in conclusion, character design is a very valid point to critcize hoyoverse on bc they objectively suck at it, despite having the resources to make character design that doesn't suck and their one saving grace is being really really good at motifs. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

They made her a fox only because Robin was a fox and making her something else would be “weird”, but I don’t think the wolf cop or the chicken maid or the lion prince were actually meant to represent race.

Anyway this disability pride month I would like to shoutout disabled folks whose creativity has suffered because of their condition. I’m talking people with hand tremors and pain that stop them from drawing, knitting, and playing instruments. People whose thinking has become so disorganized that nothing they write makes sense to other people. People with chronic pain who can no longer dance. People so over medicated in a fruitless attempt to maintain stability that the wells of their imagination have run dry.

I see you and I love you. You are more than your creative output. You are not a shell of what you used to be. You are a whole, complete person, regardless of what your creativity has been, is now, or will be in the future.
