There are endless ways to interpret the Gods of the Silt Verses, but a really cool one is that they literally don’t exist—that they are literally and narratively lies that cannot have agency.
Because I’m me, a swag way of to think about this is like how devas function in vajrayana and esoteric Buddhism more generally: that gods are like moulds to pour your own mind and effort into. Like a fluid-based computer, they have no agency on their own—but can cause reliable and reproducible effects by interacting with them in specific ways.
This is obviously already metaphorically true in tsv, but the precise mechanism by which it is isn’t explored (rightfully so). But imo picturing them in this context makes the character work of that show even better. If you remove even the possibility of the Gods having any agency over the story at all—if they’re truly empty—you quickly run out of people to blame.
Following this logic in extremis also ends up in some really fun interpretations.
For example, what if the Divine is just an externalisation of everyone’s own magical powers? What if, in a causative sense, you think of miracles in the same way you think of Merlin casting fireballs or whatever?
If the gods aren’t real, maybe people in this universe can just do all that? Maybe this isn’t a fantasy story about outside influences, but a fantasy story about how we hide our own power and agency behind convenient excuses?
What if the gods literally aren’t even real?

Oscar Oiwa - Light Shop 2, 2018 - Oil on canvas
i do everything with oranges except eat them. they say love is in the peeling, is in the separating of the segments, one by one / slow & wholesome day at a time. who will do that for me? with all the white bits still attached—i miss her, all too much, & still lie / awake for the feeding. a horse clips down the street & i have no apples. just a body full of warm milk laced with honey or something else that stings a little, with more sweetness than i can take. at least it's something / i have tried. i've known of people to not even do that. i give them their space. during which / a friend & i spend time together & afterwards, my calves ache for days. this is love, the good grit & dirt of it all. we have bananas & apricots & we know of each other's pain. lay on the bed together & after, still laugh the same. my mother was wrong about so much. still, i can't see that / oftentimes. i am on edge & i'm not sure why. i know i lie / awake for the feeding that will not come. see, both hunger & fullness make my stomach hurt. i don't talk about this—there are other fruits to peel—finally, i allow myself to feel the sticky innards—& / then rosemarie says she is sorry for the feeling of what might have happened to me, & that maybe next time i can look her in the eye. i tell her i'll try—i don't / & all gone is this hold of mine

In ~these times~ it is important for queer people to be reminded of what "coming out" originally meant. "Coming out" did not mean telling all of your co-workers something super stigmatized and vulnerable about you, wearing your queer status on your sleeve in public, informing the police or government institutions about your sexuality, or even telling your parents. "Coming out" meant venturing out into the queer community; being among other queers as a queer yourself.
Coming out isn't about telling the entire world when doing so is not safe for you, it's not about arming your enemies with information they could use against you. No, coming out is about making a fulfilling queer life possible for yourself through participation in the queer community. It is about escaping the restrictions and dangers of the cisgender heterosexual world by rooting oneself more deeply into the queer one.
And you can always do that. No matter how oppressed we are. No matter how much the culture shifts and policies are enacted to terrorize us. We are always able to be ourselves when we are amongst each other. And living our queerness has always been a collective social project, not just a matter of personal exposure.
I will become everything I said I would be.
thank you for protecting us from the wolf we know what great job you do we love you
i keep thinking about how rfk said that autistic people "will never write a poem." i keep thinking about that, about if humanity is calculated on the back of old verse. how far we measure personhood is in baseball and stanza breaks.
i keep thinking - i have over 7k poems on here alone. language can be a special interest, after all. did you know the word autism comes almost direct from the greek word autos, meaning "self"? self-ism.
maybe he is right - i haven't really played baseball. i was a ballet dancer instead. and besides - my sister once accidentally hit me in the face with an aluminum bat. i'm not sure if the injury gives me half points. am i only a person in the dugout? hand in a mitt? swinging?
does softball count? does cricket? am i a person if i throw the ball to my dog. am i a person as long as the ball is in the air, or do i stop being a person as it rolls into the bushes. i took my girlfriend to fenway recently; was i a person in the sun, with my hands up, with the game laid out at my feet in a diamond. i felt like a person, but that was back in the summer, and i often feel my most person-like then.
am i more of a person because of the sheer number of things i've written? does quality matter, or is it quantity? i used to write entire books every summer in high school - i wasn't doing well. i felt the least like-a-person back then. but then - does any person feel human in high school?
in the library, ink on my skin, i feel personhood shutter at the edges of myself. actually, writing feels blissfully like not being myself. it feels birdlike; escaping into creation so my body dissolves and i survive only by muscle memory. i am not there, i am writing.
but who can deny the falconlike focus of warsan shire, the tenderness of mary oliver, the sheer skill of amanda gorman. those are poets. they are certainly human. you could line them up with the way their words have influenced us and measure their literary shadows like wings.
perhaps it was very assumptive of me to want to be a poet rather than "a [ label ] poet." i wanted the work to fill itself in, rather than be stained by what i am. i do not write in despite of my neurodivergence, i am just neurodivergent and writing.
does the poem have to be in english or can i send it through my palms into the coat of my dog. does the poem have to make sense. does the poem have to love you back.
if i break a glass, will the poem appear naturally? or is the act of breaking the glass human-enough. the shards of my life glittering out beneath me - do i have to write the poem, or is it self-evident in the pile of glass splinters? i cannot grasp this world the way other people can. regardless, i endeavor to touch - even the mess - very gently.
i broke my toenail against my coffee table recently. i released a bug outdoors. i made coffee. i walked my dog.
i didn't write a poem about any of these things.
something else, then. existing without humanity.
The occupation is misleading the media, claiming that aid is entering all areas of the Gaza Strip. On the other hand, it has limited its entry to the southern Gaza Strip only, with the aim of encouraging residents of the north, including my family, to migrate south again. Furthermore, aid is not reaching a quarter of the Gaza Strip's population due to the months-long closure of the crossing. The Gaza Strip needs large quantities of food supplies.
Please donate to my family in northern Gaza. They are in great need of help. They cannot find bread to eat or any other type of food. The prices are very high. Donate here please
I haven't received any donations for two days except for my friend.
Mother of the young man Ahmed Sobh, listen to the story of my son Ahmed, who suffers from autism, with the permission of mercy, and thank you 🍉🍉🇵🇸🇵🇸
Stand with us 🍉🍉🍉
This is me, Mother of Ahmed from Gaza 🍉🇵🇸🍉, here small message from Ahmed:
I have autism, which means I sometimes find things a bit hard. Before the war, I used to go to therapy sessions to help me, but now I can't because of the war. I get really nervous and fidgety, and I don't talk much. Mom really wants to take me somewhere where I can get better and be like other kids.
I'd really appreciate it if you would share my donation campaign in your blog.
This donation campaign will be soon vetted by: @el-shab-hussein @moayesh @nabulsi
Thanks in advance
