With the funeral coming up, I figured it would be a good time to share some of my Lovebirds thoughts.
Marcel 100% inspired Ash to be a better person. Going from regularly burning down buildings to actively making new ones is a massive change, and one that seems to have been brought on by Marcel.
(I wonder if Ash laid awake in bed, staring at their ceiling and asking the universe if they just hadn't been good enough to deserve Marcel? If he might've still been alive if they'd just worked harder to redeem themself, and been more deserving of his love?)
Marcel was a source of comfort for Ash. He'd had a large part in building Bright Step, which was the physical manifestation of safety: a safe place to settle down, build a nest, fall in love... not to mention the only place they seemed to be able to hide from Castrel.
Marcel's entire thing is building bird sanctuaries.
Ash and Marcel literally built a sanctuary together.
I think that's a big reason that Ashril didn't run away when Marcel died.
Marcel might be gone, but the physical embodiment of the safety he provided still exists. Both the architecture and the community of Brightstep are the fruits of everything he was and everything he did. In that way, Marcel will continue to live on through Brightstep.
Building on that, I predict that Marcel's death is going to herald the end of Brightstep's sanctuary. The community is going to start to fracture without him there to hold it together.
I for one am super hyped to see everyone struggle :D
