Ok. Ok ok ok. But can we talk Massimo Marcovaldo a second? (LUCA SPOILERS)
First of all. Born physically disabled in that he was born without part right arm, doesnât shy away from the topic when he notices Alberto staring, makes it abundantly clear he is perfectly capable in his life regardless⊠no tragic backstory, sea monsters didnât eat his arm (despite him making that joke), he isnât burdened by it in any way, shape or form, Giulia isnât mocked for having a dad with no arm, nor is Massimo himself mocked for it.
Secondly: he welcomes Alberto and Luca despite them being a little strange and quirky and immediately puts them to work to earn their keep
Thirdly: clearly a very doting father! That sign he made for Giulia to cheer her on????? Giving in to her request to enter the race??? Having a close relationship despite only having Giulia for the summer as part of his co-parenting situation with his either divorced or separated wife or even potentially someone he was never married to (but Massimo seems like a guy who would âtake responsibilityâ and try to make a marriage work for his kid if Giulia was born out of wedlock)
FOURTHLY: the dude cooks every night. He isnât an incompetent father who struggles to make ends meet. Heâs a normal guy who makes a living through fishing and he cooks clearly delicious pasta!
FOURTHLY: when Alberto reveals himself to Giulia and swims off, and Giulia and Luca come home without him and say heâs run off, MASSIMO IMMEDIATELY DECIDES TO GO LOOK FOR HIM. And even when Luca says he might not want to be found, HE STILL GOES OUT JUST IN CASE ALBERTO CHANGES HIS MIND
FIFTHLY: well-known sea monster hunter Massimo Marcovaldo, second after his daughter, defended to the two sea monster boys because he knew their true character and accepted them as they are and protected them from the other sea monster hunters!!!
SIXTHLY: Letâs be clear. Either Massimo or Giuliaâs mom or a joint-payment situation is happening to pay for Luca to attend school. The Paguroâs are fish people who have no money. They deffo arenât paying. Maybe grandma has some cash stowed away but nowhere near enough to send Luca to school. Not to mention Luca will be staying at Giuliaâs momâs house. Even for a good friend, taking care of an extra kid is gonna cost something. Massimo is likely footing a large part of the bill. Out of pure generosity. This man is a saint.
AND FINALLY: when Luca is told he can go to school and Alberto decides to stay rather than join him, itâs revealed Massimo offers him a place to stay and be that fatherly influence that Alberto has been missing in his life, and is offering him that connection heâs been missing, and theyâll both keep the other company and help each other out until Luca and Giulia can make their way back to them.
Massimo Marcovaldo is a top tier dad and I love him
