I'm an emotional abuse survivor, and Ragatha's story in Digital Circus hits me like a train and genuinely, I have no idea how no one else is talking about it
I knew FROM THIS MOMENT exactly why Ragatha is the way she is. The way she pulls herself short because you DO NOT TALK about what you go through, you do not tell anyone what your parent does to you or says to you. No one gets it. It's embarrassing. It's too much.
But her torture scene in the new episode just cemented it for me.
It's always at the dinner table. You can't get away at dinner. You have to sit with your abuser, who has probably already hit their limit for the day and is looking for someone to unleash their stress at. And you have to take it, because it gets SO much worse if you get up from the table before you're finished.
All the mannequins make me wonder if Ragatha has a big family. That's an awful lot of people who have already been beaten down and aren't speaking up to defend her.
Ragatha is a rag doll because Caine can see in her mind files that she's been used that way all her life. Thats how she sees herself. She's a soft thing to be thrown about. She can stand up to rough treatment. You can fling as many knives at her as you like and it doesn't matter, because she's made of stuffing, it doesn't hurt. You can just patch her up and keep going.
But if course it hurts. Look at her.
(and obviously her mother didn't *actually stab her in the eye*, come on guys.)
But I have to go back to how Ragatha's mother is shown here, because it speaks volumes to Ragatha's entire character. It's so screamingly obvious to me, probably because I mould my own life exactly how Ragatha does, for better or for worse.
The mother looks like Ragatha. She has the same hair, the same body type.
And the whole time she's abusing Ragatha, she's *smiling.* She's enjoying it. She's exactly the type of vile bully that comes up with her most hurtful thing to say, and smiles in your face while she says it, because it makes her feel good.
THAT is why Ragatha is so accommodating. THAT'S why she doesn't tell Jax to fuck off until she's given "permission" by Pomni at the softball game (who immediately gets freaked out by her big feelings and tells her she's being irrational).
THAT is why she tries to keep the peace and not upset people. THAT is why, almost to the very last, she tries to placate Caine.
Because she thinks that if she hurts someone's feelings, *SHE IS EXACTLY LIKE HER MOTHER.* And in Ragatha's mind, there is nothing worse in the whole world than finding out you're just like your abuser. Cosmically, you might even think that's why they hurt you in the first place. Because you're bad. You deserve it.
So you make nice. You stay quiet. You give compliments. You make sure everyone is happy.
You pick yourself up and keep going, despite constantly being knocked down, dismissed, laughed at. You try your best not to set them off, not set *anyone* off, because if they freak out, you end up being the villain. And there's always that tiny part of your brain that is terrified, deep down, that you are going to hurt people in the same way you were hurt.
Iāve never been a big angst person for this reason but Iām writing an angsty Ragapom fic right now and I literally canāt stop crying thinking about it. I hope that means itāll be good lol
Those TADC fans when someone goes āYou guys canāt handle complex female characters!ā but itās another woman who isnāt Jax so they donāt gaf
You are all such fucking hypocrites cause SAME PEOPLE who were giving Ragatha shit for standing up to Jax saying sheās ātoxicā for RIGHTFULLY being concerned about Jax and Pomniās relationship. When jax transitioned in the fandom yall were QUICK to excuse all the abuse, calling people transphobic for calling out the misogynistic rhetoric being perpetuated throughout the show for the past two years even if Jax doesnāt fall under the patriarchy anymore.
Two years of people excusing a (from what we knew then) manās bad behavior. Now that sheās transitioned yall wanna act like it all never happened. What a wonderful fandomšš¼
Iāve already seen the movie BUT I found this bingo card I made before any of the leaks came out so Iām sharing it for those who havenāt yet seen it (and have somehow avoided spoilers which I applaud youš)
I put in a lot of popular theories and such, plus stuff I wanted to happen. So yeahā¦..
So in the infamous āTotally normal cartoon fightā scene in Episode 6, Pomni attacks Jax but he doesnāt fight back (other than pushing her off). The whole idea is that thereās something stopping him from fighting back.
Well, I think Episode 9 gave us the true reason.
During Jaxās dreamscape scene, Jax stands at Ragathas door with a completely void expression, masking hard. Pomni comes up to him saying the same types of āplease let me help youā āI can fix youā from before (def amplified since thatās his perseption of her). THEN he chokes her out, willingly hurting her and finally āfighting backā
This proves to me that the reason Jax didnāt fight back was because of Ragatha. Whether that means he didnāt wanna prove Ragatha right by fighting back before (since Ragatha believed him to be dangerous and therefore protective of Pomni) or that there was a small part of him that still cared for his former freind, who knows.
Ragatha is the last person alive that knew Jax since the beginning, so she probably has a special place in his heart. Her death could be the death of who he was the beginning, letting him fully embrace his abuse. .It could also be Jax taking out his emotions over Ragathas abstraction on Pomni, assuming heād, once again, be the reason with him befriending Pomni to spite her (even if his motivations changed further on).
Idk, Iām just so happy to have that confirmation that in some way or form, Jax and Ragatha cared about each other. I wish we couldāve seen a more in depth look into Ragathaās reaction to his abstraction. But, whatās done is done.
I keep thinking about how Ragatha is so Maxine Baker from Ginny and Georgia coded to meš
Both are very happy go lucky, energetic and annoying to some. Both are the āglass childrenā in their respective groups. Both very gay and also very depressed. Maxineās storyline in Season 3 about feeling rejected by her friends because sheās ātoo muchā felt so similar to Ragatha feeling rejected by Pomni and the other cast members because her kindness was āfakeā
Maybe Iāll draw Ragatha in some of these scenes idk
The Amazing Digital Circusā biggest fumble to me will always be how it handled Ragatha and Jaxās relationship. Not because it was a poorly written dynamic but because it was so complex in comparison to most of TADCās dynamics to make for a wonderful foil story. Yet, the show never bothers to explore them any further outside of Ribbit and Pomni.
Ragatha and Jax were introduced as narrative foils, had an ambivalent relationship that always hinted at more, had parallels to Ted/Ellen and several married characters, were confirmed to be ex-friends, often criticized the other but still cared about them, etc. Yet, the show never properly addresses this dynamic between both of them outside of their sole POVS. Past 5-6, it genuinely felt like they no longer cared about developing Ragathaās character any further, especially with Jax. Ragatha and Jaxās dynamic was too peak for Goose, it combusted.
She deadass told Ragatha that āyou were always my closest friendā as Jaxās abstracted body runs around in circles below them. Itās nice to hear but DAMN IT reads like Pomni treating Ragatha like sloppy secondsš¬š¬š¬
GUYS RAGATHA HAS A PIANO IN HER FUCKING ROOM WHAT DO MEAN JAX PLAYS PIANO AND POMNIS LIKE āomg thatās like so coolā OR WTVR AND THEY GET TO BOND OVER THAT??? DOES RAGATHA EVEN MAYTER ANYMORE? WE NEVER GET TO SEE HER ROOM GOD IM SO TIRED OF THIS BULLSHIT
