I was looking over some of my favourite moments or hints between these two, and while searching through @aitaikimochi ‘s page, I actually came across many others I hadn’t seen before, and was given a really nice surprise! So I decided to make a small list of the known KiriBaku moments translated by her, some being lesser known, some more popular!

do you not see the krbk hand scene as a kinda romantic coded thing at all? and the whole thing with kirishima becoming unbreakable because of bakugou's encouragement? just wondering because i feel like if one of them was a girl then people definitely would!

i’m going to try not to make this one too long so long answer short: yes i do. that’s why i ship them, and that’s why i write about them, because i see something there!

now for the long answer: there are a minimum of two reading levels to every story.

the inner level, where we’re with the characters themselves, where it’s about what the characters tell us. at this level, i see bakugou encouraging kirishima as a sign of their strong relationship. i see kirishima thinking of bakugou to become unbreakable as yet another sign. i see kirishima being The One, the hand bakugou can take, as proof of how healthy and balanced their friendship is. put yourself is these situations: would doing any of this mean romance to you? in my case, not necessarily. it’d mean strong friendship, but not obligatory love. if i have to grab my best friend’s hand to get out of a possibly lethal situation, it won’t mean i’ll marry her (but it can!!! though as i said earlier, i don’t think that they’re interested about relationship rn)

the outer level, where we’re with the author this time. that’s where coding comes in, that’s where symbolism comes in, where narative loops and arcs matter. it’s less about what the characters say and more about what the author shows through them. stories have shortcuts, they have ways to be told. we all know that when a man and a woman make eye contact in a movie and the camera is used to make them look close physically and there’s this focus on their faces, and maybe the dialogue is a bit snarky, then it means they’re meant to be. their actions might be bland but the way it’s framed tells a whole different story. it tells us, the audience, what the director means: they’re gonna bang. the message isn’t literal, but that’s how coding works. we can read that. we’re used to that. that’s also what makes me say with absolute certitude that if either bakugou or kirishima were a girl, and canon still kept being canon, they’d be the main ship of the series and no one would be afraid the say “they’re endgame”. when i see the canon events on this level, i see characters written purposefully to make exceptions for each other. i see characters in desperate need of social stability who are given Each Other, who are written to be with, appreciate and support each other. i see characters who are drawn to each other in every situation, who are repeatedly made to be a pair when they very well could have been alone. the story insists on how important they are to each other. and yeah, in these moments, i see romance, or at least the potential for one. none of this had to happen, it’s all fiction, it can always be written a different way. yet hori makes them a pair, and official manga and anime art makes them a pair, and merch makes them a pair. i see a couple. if it was a straight pairing, they’d be pretty much canon, because choosing to portray them this way over and over would mean love in our heterocentric society.

there are whole debates to have about this but my mind won’t change: there are solid reasons to ship kiribaku. what i’m interested in is the way the outer level will bleed into the inner. these characters will grow up. they’ll grow next to each other, and these memories, these exceptions they made for each other will stay with them, grow with them.

what do you do, at 25 years old, when your best friend still stands by your side and you remember that 10 years ago, you wouldn’t have accepted to be saved by anyone else? what do you do when the guy who lit a fire so strong in you that you looked at death in the eyes and literally saved lives still encourages you through your highs and lows? what do you do, when you’ve grown into each other so well, when you’ve opened up to each other and shared hobbies, free time, comfort zones for a dozen years? what does all of this feel like, when you’re mature enough to ask yourself if you’ve known love?

i know it’s sappy, but it’s what i love to think about. what’s important isn’t a snapshot of their relationship, it’s the progress. it’s the movement. it’s how they’re going to grow. because they haven’t kissed at 15 doesn’t mean they never will, and from my window, they look like the kind of people who will have both the chemistry and the history to want to kiss at 20.
