This week, my interview Nantucket resident and space enthusiast Paula Korn. Though her career started in public broadcasting, she has worked at MIT, Brown, Boeing, and as a "freelancer" for NASA. She shares her memories of the first moon landing, insight into on-going international space research, and thoughts on future interplanetary exploration.

This week, I talk with potter Nell Van Vorst in her studio. Her porcelain pottery often features very simple line drawings of plants and animals, their forms reduced to their essentials. This week, Dr. Aaron Ellison that Lady Gaga take fashion cues from ant species. Dr. Aaron Ellison, the senior research fellow of ecology at Harvard Forest and coauthor of A Field Guide to the Ants of New England (Yale University Press), recently visited Nantucket as the keynote speaker for the Biodiversity Conference. He stopped in to talk about ants, soil, and climate.
Poet Len Germinara shares, from the Moors Poetry Collective's "Poems So Far," his piece, "Endangered Species Monitor" (14:50).

In this week's episode of The Current, I just can't stop talking about scallops.
First, I check in with Tara Riley, town shellfish biologist, about the state of the fishery and a short history of her successful propagation program.
Next, I head out on the water with Peter Boyce, research associate at the Maria Mitchell Association. He leads their scallop research program, and we motored out to Madaket to collect and count spat bags (12:30).
Finally, I talk with Valerie Hall, retired Nantucket High School science teacher and PhD candidate at UMass Boston. She studies Nantucket bay scallops, analyzing their life stages and modeling their population (21:50).

Regina Asmita-Sylvia, executive director and senior biologist of the North American office of Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), and Monica Peppy, project supervisor of the WDC internship program on Nantucket, visit the studio for a conversation about whales, science, and advocacy. We also discuss their Nantucket-based research project, a collaboration between WDC, UMass Boston, and Shearwater Excursions.
