Zanka was completely convinced that you didn’t have an off-button, let alone a sense of personal space.

The rest of the team would always know exactly where the two of you were, and the reason was simple: the loud echo of a confident laugh, an unnecessary boast about how incredibly skilled he was, and, almost immediately, the sound of Zanka complaining or sighing in frustration.

"Look everyone at the great Zanka, the strongest warrior, melting at a simple touch of my hand!" you announced loudly to the entire room, shamelessly intertwining your fingers with his as you walked down the hallway.

"Shut your mouth! I'm not melting over anything!" Zanka shot back, his cheeks burning a bright red that completely contradicted his harsh words. "And let go of me, we're working!"

But you never let go. You loved initiating physical contact, doing so with a boundless, lazy confidence, as if you had every right in the world to him. If he was sitting down cleaning Assistaff, you would slide up behind him to wrap your arms around his waist, resting your chin on his shoulder while bragging about your latest mission. If you were walking down the street, you would catch him by surprise by grabbing his hand, or even spin him around to plant a quick kiss on the back of his knuckles, flashing him a smug smile that always managed to put him on the defensive.

Zanka always protested, grumbled, and told you that you were a noisy distraction, but the reality was that he never pulled away. He had grown so used to your chaotic rhythm that, to him, your constant affection was simply his new normal.

The problem arose one afternoon when the headquarters fell into an unusual silence.

But all he received was absolute silence.

Zanka frowned, puzzled by the lack of noise. He felt your body go completely rigid in his arms. Tilting his head to look at your face, he froze.

All your wild confidence had evaporated. Your eyes were wide open, fixed on the floor, and an intense, violent crimson blush covered you from your cheeks to your ears. You weren’t talking. You weren’t even breathing properly.

Panic seized him instantly. His mind raced at a thousand miles per hour, assuming the worst.

"What's wrong!?" Zanka exclaimed, his voice rising in pitch out of pure anxiety as he half-released your waist. "Did I hurt you? Did I squeeze too hard?"

"N-No... I..." you began to stammer, your voice so soft and timid that Zanka barely recognized you. You covered your face with both hands, desperately trying to hide your embarrassment. "It's not... you didn't do anything w-wrong, Zanka..."

"Then why are you stammering and shaking like a scared little puppy!?" he demanded, his heart pounding in his chest from the scare. "You're always shouting and acting like you own the place! You're scaring me!"

"It's just... you n-never do this!" you finally managed to confess, peeking through your fingers with eyes shining with pure shyness. "I-I'm always the one who touches you first... I'm not... I'm not used to you being so... so damn sweet to me, idiot. It caught me off guard. But... I love it. I love that you did it first."

Zanka went speechless for a couple of seconds, processing your rushed words as he observed your curled-up, completely vulnerable figure in his lap. Realization hit him all at once, clearing away all the panic and replacing it with a massive, smug wave of self-satisfaction.

A malicious, mocking smirk began to form on Zanka's lips.

"Well, well, well..." he drawled, intentionally leaning closer to your ear, enjoying how you flinched. "So this is your weak spot. You get like this if I lift a single finger?"

"S-Shut up!" you shrieked, burying your head into his shoulder to hide your completely red face.

"No, I don't think I'll shut up," Zanka chuckled, a husky and genuinely amused sound as he wrapped his arms tightly around your waist again, this time with total confidence. "Where did all that confidence you always brag about go? Weren't you going to tell the whole headquarters how I have you trapped in my arms right now? Come on, shout it. I want to hear you."

"Zanka, please..." you pleaded in a whisper, completely defenseless against his sudden change in attitude.

"How silly you are," he murmured, but his tone turned immensely warm as he planted a quick kiss on the crown of your head, hugging you even tighter. "If I had known that a little bit of affection would shut you up and make you look this cute, I would have done it since day one. Get ready, because I plan on doing this very often."

Ever since you and Zanka had that first clash with Jabber you made it your mission to create an antidote for his poison and neurotoxin. The main reason other than wanting to piss off the purple freak show was to show your undying support for Zanka, who you may have a massive crush on.

After weeks of careful experiments you think you made an antidote strong enough to purge the poison from the body. Only thing is you needed to test it. You knew it was risky but you ingested a small amount of poison extracted from Zanka that you recreated and waited.

Zanka was carrying a tray of food to your “lab” when he heard a loud crash coming from behind the door. Dropping the food Zanka burst down the door and was face to face with you nearly unconscious on the floor with a jar labeled ‘poison’ nearby.

“What the fuck (name)!” Zanka shouted as he rushed to your side in a flash. Cradling your body close to him he could hear your labored breathing and started to panic when he heard you mutter a single word.

“Antidote”

That was all it took for Zanka to gently place you back down and search your desk for the antidote he needed. Finding it he rushed back to your side and tried getting you to drink it but your consciousness cut off before he could get you to swallow it.

“Dammit what do I do?” He asked himself as he looked around the room but nothing useful popped out so he drank the antidote and kissed you deeply pushing his tongue into your mouth and passed the antidote orally.

He pulled back and waited with bated breath to see any reaction from you.

You suddenly woke up coughing and gasping for air causing Zanka to roll you onto your side and gently rub your back as he waited for you to settle down.

“What in the ever lovin fuck were you thinking doin something so risky you idiot?” He questioned you as he called for Eishia on his choker. Not even five minutes later the frantic healer was beside you as you rested your head on Zanka’s chest as he cradled you between his legs.

“What happened?” Eishia asked as she did a quick assessment.

“She drank poison but luckily had an antidote.” Zanka replied as he stroked your arms as you were still coughing a bit.

“Did the antidote work?” You rasped as you tried to sit up but Zanka pulled you back into his chest.

“Let me draw some blood and check but for now Zanka can you carry her to the infirmary I want to keep her overnight for observation.” Eishia explained as she stood up and gathered a few vials from your desk before leaving the room.

“Idiot don’t scare me like that ever again you mean too much to me to lose to some poison.” Zanka muttered as he gently picked you up and made his way to the infirmary.

“I could say the same to you. Why do you think I made that antidote in the first place?” You say drowsily as you fell asleep in Zanka’s sturdy arms.

Zanka set you down on the bed and sat down in the chair next to it and just watched you sleep.

Enjin burst into the room with the most out of character expression of fear on his face.

“Did she really make the antidote?” He asked as he rushed over to your side.

“Apparently. She’s been asleep for the past three hours but Eishia said she should be fine with rest. Wait you knew about this?” Zanka asked as he brushed some hair out of your face.

“The things teens do for love nowadays is crazy. Ever since your first run in with Jabber she’s been hard at work creating an antidote to give you an edge on him.”Enjin chuckled as he watched Zanka’s face turn cherry red.

“She did all that for me?” Zanka asked as he choked on his own spit.

“Dude she’s got the biggest crush on you and has spent days if not weeks making that antidote. The fact that she drank the poison to begin with is proof of that.” Enjin explained as he walked out of the infirmary.

“Stupid girl you didn’t have to that for me when I already felt the same way. But the fact that you made an antidote means a lot to me don’t get me wrong just ask for my hep next time. I hate to see someone special to me risk death just to give me a one up on an enemy.” Zanka whispered as he rested his hand on yours.

“I’m special to you?” You ask in a sleepy voice as you blink the sleep out of your eyes. Pulling his hand back in shock Zanka didn’t hesitate to wrap his arms around you the second he saw your (eye color) eyes on him.

“Of course dummy why do you think I brought food to your lab every meal time and who do you think carried you to your bed when you fell asleep at your desk. I care about you (name) more than anyone else.” Zanka confessed as he took a seat on your bed.

“Then it was worth it. If I can help you get an edge on Jabber I’ll do anything to help you even drink poison.” You say as a tired smile spread across your face as you nuzzle your head into Zanka’s chest.

He doesn't even flinch or turn around, just leaning casually against the rack, nursing the slushie in his hand. "...Didn't say you do," he replies flatly, "Just sayin' I wouldn't like it if you did."

You just narrowed your eyes at him, trying not to smile. "You do know that's basically the same thing, right?"

He just sighs, trying to hide that he's unbothered. "Then stop arguing and try it on."

You scoff, but you're already grabbed the shirt and turned towards the fitting room, already holding onto his hand. "Then, shall I try it on, just for you?"

He tried to hide his blush, clearing his throat, with that serious demeanor. "Sure"

You felt your cheek warming up, "You're such a liar," you mumble, looking away, hiding your pinking face.

"Not really," his voice came back with that serious, flat tone.

You rolled your eyes, but were already turning back into the fitting room. "I'm getting it!" You exclaimed.

"Yeah," he said, taking a sip of his slushie, "... I know.."

"I HEARD THAT." You peeked out of the curtain.

After a few minutes, you stepped out in your regular outfit, shirt in hand, already at the register. You walked out with him, thinking about the next store you want to go to.

"Next store?" you asked.

He nodded, adjusting his grip on the bags,

"YAY! So.... Victoria's Secret?!" You exclaimed, already grabbing onto his sleeve, tugging him towards the pink store.

As soon as he heard the words leaving your lips, "No."

You turned your head to fully face him, hands already on your hips, "And why not?" You asked, and he just gestured vaguely toward the glowing pink stripe store, with mannequins wearing lingerie.

"Then come in."

"No."

You narrowed your eyes at him, then walked into the store, your hand dancing through the racks near the entrance, grabbing a dark pink bra, holding it up against your chest.

You tilted your head, "Then, you won't want to see me try it on?"

His expression didn't change, but he exhaled through his nose, dragging his free hand down his face. "You're annoying, you know that?"

"And you're bad at stalling," you shot back, already stepping backward into the store, holding the bra as bait.

He stood there for a moment, then, when he walked, you walked further into the store. He clicked his tongue, "Tch."

He stuck out like a sore thumb, hands in his pocket, and tense as fuck. His eyes deliberately do not look at anything for too long. Compared to you, that's just flipping through the racks like it's your second nature.

You looked over your shoulder, looking at his tense expression, "Haha.. you look so out of place."

"Well, not for too long," you said, before grabbing another bra, "This one isn't it so cute?"

He looked at the bra, blinking once, then twice, before hiding his blush with his hand, "Yeah," he muttered,

"Fufu... are you blushing, Zanka?" You pressed your pointer finger against his cheek, and he stiffened at the contact. You felt his skin getting hotter, watching him malfunction for a moment.

For you, being near Zanka is a mix of adrenaline and pure romantic anxiety. Your problem isn't rejection; on the contrary, you're fascinated by him. The fear that Zanka will think it's unpleasant or make fun of you forces you to activate an extreme avoidance protocol.

This afternoon, as you were returning from a patrol alone, Zanka dragged you into a quiet residential alley, blocking your exit by leaning against the wall.

"Come on, talk already," he demanded, crossing his arms and frowning. "What's wrong with you? Every time I try to touch your hand, you act like it's covered in shit. If I disgust you, just say so."

You felt your heart leap out of your chest. The panic of losing him outweighed the sadness.

"It's not that!" You screamed, covering your face with both hands, "It's the complete opposite! I like you so much that I get nervous, and when I get nervous, my hands sweat like crazy. They're soaking wet, Zanka! I'm so embarrassed for you to touch me and think it's disgusting."

The alley fell into complete silence. You shrank back, expecting a huff or an annoyed complaint. Instead, you heard a husky laugh that turned into a resigned sigh. Zanka stepped forward and firmly removed your hands from your face.

He looked you straight in the eyes, his cheeks completely red, but with that confident smile that was so characteristic of him.

"Did you really think I'd care about a little sweat from the person I like? Don't talk nonsense."

You froze, feeling Zanka's rough, calloused skin clinging tightly to yours, completely ignoring the dampness. He turned to continue toward the base, gently pulling you along without letting go. Although Zanka walked looking straight ahead to hide how fast his heart was beating, he didn't loosen his grip even an inch the entire way.

to say zanka was oblivious was an understatement.

how could someone so usually sharp and attentive be so clueless when it came to love?

you weren't the sharpest tool in the shed yourself and even you were aware of Zankas feelings for you. how he always wanted to follow you on missions, how he sat beside you at dinner, how he always seeked you out when in need of a sparring partner.

you didn't push him away, and well, you'd be a liar if you didn't admit to liking him just a bit whenever someone asked you about it. after all, you two did act like a couple sometimes, when you leaned on his shoulder in the car after a rough mission or volunteered to change his bandages when he got hurt.

you would've confessed long ago weren't it for the fact Zanka seemed like he genuinely did not know what he felt about you . . . or at least didn't understand his feelings. he had the audacity to act confused whenever someone pointed out how romantic he was being towards you, like it was all casual.

it. . . kinda scared you off. maybe he didn't like you at all! you knew that probably wasn't the case, but it was a probability and it made you feel kinda hopeless. here you are, (maybe) imagining a pretty and smart and skilled guy liking you, when it was all platonic on his end. what a joke!

to be honest, you had started drifting away from him when those thoughts took over. . . what a classic, you fell for a guy way out of your league again! it felt weird to be around him when he was acting all romantic without even realising it and you just didn't seek him out as often anymore.

it wasn't often Zanka would admit to being panicked, but he seriously needed help, urgently.

why were you avoiding him? he had noticed the shift almost immediately, a slow and steady change that made you drift away from him more and more each day that passed.

Zanka was sure you two were just friends and coworkers before, but now he wasn't so sure anymore. why did he feel so weird when you pulled away from his hands whenever he fixed your hair? why did he feel so empty watching you go to others when you needed help, and not him?

he was positive this was just a normal relationship between two coworkers close in age, but Enjin had laughed in his face when Zanka asked if he had done something to upset you.

Enjin had made sure to give Zanka some words of encouragement and advice (only after teasing him about how clueless he, somehow, was) and Zanka had decided, then and there, to talk to you immediately.

he knew he wanted you to understand that he did think highly of you, that he did admire you, and that maybe, maybe his feelings for you weren't so platonic after all . . .

. . . but he didn't think about how to say it. at all.

Zanka watched as you silently shifted around where you stood, clearly uncomfortable under his gaze. he had just asked to 'have a talk', and now you looked almost . . . guilty?

Zanka felt awful. he didn't even understand why you were so upset, he was just trying to make things clear between you two!

'. . . i'm sorry' his words seemed to make you surprised, visible confusion took over your face as you finally met his eyes. 'I. . . uhm'

Zanka lost his words as your eyes landed on his — he had always felt calm whenever you looked at him like this, but now when he wasn't sure about his feelings anymore he just felt confused. who was he to ask 'to talk' when he didn't know what to say himself?

'song be sorry, i know i've been acting weird' your silent words made Zanka furrow his brows in confusion.

'you know, i understand were just . . . friends,' the pain in your voice almost made Zanka flinch, watching as you advert your gaze to anything but his face, 'but i would've appreciated if you didn't treat me like your girlfriend'

Zanka froze up at your words — so Enjin was right, you felt ignored and maybe taken advantage off . . . just because Zanka himself couldn't understand his feelings. what a joke he was, huh?

before you got another word out, Zanka acted on instinct and hugged you. tightly. maybe the longest and most sincere hug he had ever given anyone, ever.

you feel silent for what felt like forever, until you sighed and hugged Zanka back. that was a win in his book — his very messy and not-yet-done book on feelings.

the realisation that he'd have to add a chapter about 'love' made him panic, but it was okay as long as you were in his arms.

Yknow the scene where Remlin admits to fucking with the spell and everyone seems to be expecting Zanka to blow up at them about it but he just. Starts laughing? And gives them a pass even though he nearly died? That scene is load bearing for my own personal Zanka characterization.

In honor of Zanka showing up in the newest chapter after forever, here is a special treat. </3

Always thinking about that someone you aren't supposed to know anymore? A ghost, a stranger. That's what they're supposed to be to you, but how could you do that to someone you had so much chemistry with?

Everyone always thought you and Zanka would last, years at that. You two seemed so in love, as if absolutely nothing could come in between you two.

His arms were wrapped around you, holding you tight as you both layed in bed. He had come over that night, asking you if he could please just stay for a bit. You never knew how to say no to him, he was just so sweet and adorable. It felt so wrong to have him here, you two had been broken up for about two weeks now. Yet his warmth felt so comforting right now.

You looked up at him. His eyes were shut, drool collecting at the corner of his mouth. Zanka looked so peaceful, you had always been his safe space, where he can relax and have a breather.

You got up slowly, letting him remain in his peaceful state as you went to the bathroom. You threw water on your face, waking you up from the previous drowsiness. You had to collect your thoughts, trying to think of what to say to him when you went back out.

As you slowly opened the door back into your room, he was sitting up on the bed. He was fidgeting with his hands as he turned his head to look at you. His face was sad, eyes tired. It was obvious he hadn't been getting sleep the past few nights.

"I can't sleep without ya.." he called out playfully, waiting for you to say something.

You sighed before opening your mouth to speak. You knew you were about to break his heart even more than it already was, and the pain in your chest got more prominent as you spit the words out.

"It's time for you to leave Zanka." you said, walking over and sitting on the edge of the bed as you waited for his response.

He just looked at you, sad and confused.Slowly, he made his way over to you, wrapped his arms around you from behind as he sunk his head onto your shoulder, planting a small kiss on it before moving up to your neck and resting on it.

"Please don't do this'..." he said. It felt as if he was trying to take in all of this moment. Suck up all of your warmth, that comforting feeling of his skin touching yours.

You couldn't take this anymore, the guilt and regret piling up. His touch was interrupted by you standing up and breaking away from it. You looked at him in despondency.

"I'm sorry... you need to leave." you choked out, holding back tears. You loved Zanka, but you knew it was for the better if he stayed away from you.

He stayed in place for a few seconds, trying to process what you had just said. A sigh slipped out of his lips as he began to get out of bed. "I understand." he said, walking over to you. "I'll just miss you." he led on, cupping your face into his hands before placing a kiss on your lips, which you returned in an instant, never able to resist him.

His lips were soft and genuine, almost as if he was trying to prove that your relationship could still work. The kiss deepened as his hands moved down and found a new place on your waist, his lips pushing deeper onto yours in desperation.

Your hands were stuck to your side, they wanted to move so bad and as much as you fought the urge they eventually won, wrapping around his neck and pulling him closer to you. Gosh, you're going to miss this. His taste, his aroma, all his gestures of affection.

A minute must've passed before you pulled away from him, breaking the contact between the both of you once again. His eyes were almost glistening, his love for you was so obvious it hurt.

"Zanka -"

"Why do ya do this to' me." he interrupted. Hands still firm on your waist, waiting for you to rip them off.

That look in your eye told him everything he needed to know, he could always read you easily. After all, he spent most of the time you two had together studying you. All your behavior, emotions, reactions, etcetera.

"We can't do this anymore Zanka." you said, waiting for him to protest as he usually did. You unwrapped your arms, bringing them down to gently remove his hands from your waist. "I love you.. more than anything.. - but I -"

"I know." he frowned, leaning in for one last kiss on your forehead before he walked out of your room, leaving you alone, just as you apparently wanted.

You sat back down on your bed, thinking about where it all went wrong between you two.

Zanka had made his way back to his room, undressing himself before stepping into the shower. He stood in the middle of it, water soaking his hair and running down his face as he reminisced on sweet moments you'd have together.

Whenever he was too tired to wash his hair, you'd do it for him. Your gentle hands making their way onto him, shampooing and conditiong it until it was all clean.

The hot water made a cut on his chest burn and itch, resulting in another memory.

You'd always kiss the spots where he got hurt, if he had bruises or a cut, you would automatically press your lips against the area and plop a gentle kiss on it, telling him "it'll make it alll better!" always resulting in wide smiles from the both of you.

As he snapped out of his thoughts he felt nauseous, your scent lingered all over his body, as if it had fused and become a part of him entirely. He tried his best to wash it off him, scrubbing all over himself as hard as possible.

That smell that once gave him so much comfort now made him sick to his stomach, and he hated it.

He stepped out the shower, drying himself off and putting a pair of clothes on before laying down on his bed, his head pounding, unable to let the thought of you two working out escape his brain.

Even his sheets smelled like you, the urge crept up and he didn't resist as he sniffed into them, hungry for your comfort and love. He knew nothing lasted forever, but he wished you two could have.

He hated the idea of becoming strangers. You two had so much passion for each other, you had seen each other in every situation and emotion possible.

"Will I ever get ya' again?" he whispered to himself, why'd you have to turn around on him. He had so much to offer for you, and you knew that. So why couldn't you just stay with him?

It was all too much for Zanka, his heart hurt. He'd go back to you in an instant, all he needed was one reason to wait for you and he would, because you're all he's ever wanted.

A particular knocking was heard at his door that caused his heart to speed up. It was a pattern the two of you had invented in order to identify each other. Zanka sat up as quick as possible, rushing over to the door as he swung it open.

And there you were, standing in front of him. Your eyes were red from how much you've been crying.

"What're ya doin' here?" he asked, confused. Didn't you just tell him to leave an hour ago? Well.. It doesn't matter. He was just glad to see you... But you looked so sad?

Words began spilling out of you almost immediately.

"Zanka... I can't stay away from you. I try so hard but I can't, and I know we aren't good for each other anymore, that's why I feel so selfish for doing this to you but please listen to me." you begged as you walked into his room. He shut the door and walked over to you, all ears to what you had to say.

"I can't help it either'... I'm tired of feelin' this way." he replied, placing his hand on your cheek and caressing it with his thumb.

There was silence for awhile as you melted into his touch, staring at each others eyes in confusion and hurt. What was stopping you from getting back together? Was it fear of getting hurt? Maybe you just weren't ready to commit to him. That was after all the main reason the relationship ended in the first place.

"Y'know...i'll always have a piece of ya in my soul. I'll never be able to get over' ya." he said, slipping his hand off your face as he sat down.

That statement alone made your heart ache.

"Zanka.. you've taught me so much, ..but I still have so much to learn." you faintly replied.

"I will always love you...You'll be the missing piece in my future, the thought that keeps me up at night, because even though I'd do anything for you, this I can't do." you look down at him, his face warm and inviting, almost like a last chance to take back all your words and just give him a kiss that'd end these stupid feelings of doubt.

"I wish things' were different.." he sighs. He knew you weren't going to give in. Not even if he cried, begged, or proved to you he was the one.

His sadness turned into anger as he felt your eyes piercing him. How could he have been so stupid? To think you really liked him. After all you've been through together you're still scared of getting closer to him? He had been so vulnerable with you, and this is how you repay him? Maybe he should've been even more open with you, more gentle than he already was. It's ridiculous really, to think he actually had a shot of being with someone who really loved him... even more ridiculous that he thought it could be you.

"Leave." he commanded, colder and angrier then you had ever heard him before.

"Please..just get out.." he pleaded, his voice shaky as he balled his fists up.

All you could muster was a soft apology before you left his room. His words rang in your ear, how he'll never be able to get over you, but thats not what you wanted. You wanted him to move on with his life, forget about you if he has to. You felt like a piece of shit.. and maybe you kinda are.

You were back in your room, sulking and crying. You didn't want to hurt Zanka you really didn't. But its for the best, right?

A/N: I can't tell if I hate this or not. The song I got requested didn't have many lyrics so it was kinda difficult. Speaking of (asking again) has anyone noticeddd that all my ffs are named after songs? Also, do people even read these. It's whatever yoo. I like writing about Zanka though, he's so easy to make miserable.. Along with Follo! Haha the misery buddies. Amazing.
