I’ve never really understood the criticism/“flaw” some people have with Nana being that it’s not “real yuri.” Mostly because I didn’t get into Nana specifically for that. Nana and Hachi’s relationship is the core of the story yes, but it’s also about relationships in general. It’s also how both girls inability to really work out their insecurities/hangups, leads to things getting worse for them and progressively becoming more separated.

It feels a little disingenuous to chalk up Nana as either “Yuri” or “Yuri Bait,” because there’s a lot more going on there. Like, you can either read Nana as “these two girls are clearly in love, but cultural and hetronormative norms are preventing them from acting on that” or “they aren’t in love exactly, but have a deeply meaningful relationship that impacts their lives immensely,” and I would not be able to physically stop either party from thinking that.*

And even if it’s confirmed that Nana and Hachi aren’t gay, that’s literally never stopped anyone in a fandom from shipping two characters together. I feel the issue is part of a larger concern about representation with lesbian/bisexual female characters, and what’s canon versus what’s not. Which again, is a distinction I’ve never bothered to keep in mind, but it’s one I can understand
