a lot of the difference is social and vulcans are desperately pretending that this isn't the case while absolutely doing it.
watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.
sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.
society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.
turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.
my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.
also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.
ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.
- I Want To Strangle Medical Fatphobia With My Bare Fucking Hands
- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.
i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!

Honestly the aesthetics of Magic the Gathering peaked when it was just Jimmy Garfield's stack of Xeroxed bullshit bootleg index cards and it's been downhill ever since. "Universes Beyond is killing the original spirit of the game" the spirit of the game is using your roommate's shitty Brother HL-L2405W to print off the ugliest proxies you've ever seen to make all your friends hate you. DIY forever!
Side Note I think this is the most valuable Bootleg Calvin of all time like imagine if one of those Pissing Calvin stickers sold for half as much.

So among all the other varied things I do for a living, I've spent the tourism season this year guiding bus tours to Mt. St. Helens for Adventure Day Touring. We get to create our own tour scripts; as long as they're relevant to the trip, it's all good. Since it's a long drive from the Port of Kalama where we pick up cruise ship passengers to the mountain itself, there's ample time for me to talk about the geology of MSH, the two months leading up to the 1980 eruption, and the eruption and aftermath. I like to wrap up the talk with pointing out the ecological recovery of the landscape there.
While the first thing people often think of with MSH is the twelve mile high ash cloud that lasted all day and then circumnavigated the globe over the next two weeks, that wasn't the longest-term impact of the eruption. No, that honor goes to the lahars, volcanic mudflows that formed when the heat of the eruption melted the mountain's entire snowpack all at once, sending almost four million cubic yards of mud, rock, and dead trees racing down the mountain.
But the lahars didn't stop there. They flooded the North Fork Toutle River, then the main Toutle, then the Cowlitz, and finally the Columbia, where they filled the 40 foot deep shipping channel to just 13 feet deep. Along the way they took out almost 200 homes and two dozen bridges, largely powered by a 600 foot wide logjam at the head of the flood. When the lahars finally came to a halt, they left up to 600 feet deep mud deposits along their path.
But the mud isn't going to stay put. The Toutle keeps eroding it away as it flows, moreso with seasonal rains and snowmelt. The dam referenced in the article was completed in 1987 to help keep the mud from filling the Columbia again, and was supposed to not be full until 2035. (It was full by 2012). The Army Corps of Engineers has had to raise the height of the dam twice, and they can only raise it so much more.
While the MSH National Volcanic Monument is being allowed to recover without human interference, so scientists can see how the land responds to such a massive disturbance over time, the area referenced in the article is outside that boundary. Most of the human changes have been of the "timber company planting new tree plantations" variety. But I am loving seeing this effort toward bringing in beavers as ecosystem engineers.
See, it's estimated that there were once as many as 400 million beavers across North America. Excessive trapping for their fur, castor glands, or simply to get them out of the way meant that they were extirpated from most of their range, and today they are still commonly classified as nuisance animals, meaning landowners can exterminate them at will. The North American population has rebounded to about 15 million, but that's a tiny fraction of their prior numbers.
What we are finding when we reintroduce them to their old habitats is that they very often have positive impacts. In this case, they are slowing flooding and helping native ecosystems return. Beavers are a pioneer species, and were among the first animals to return to MSH after the eruption. Even if reintroduced beavers head upstream to the National Volcanic Monument, increasing beaver density there, it's only a reflection of the return of these ecosystem engineers to more normal numbers.
somebody put this in a time capsule because it is so important that future generations see this
I remember once wondering what the fallout was for this, if any (and hoping he didn’t get into trouble). I just had to look it up again because I remembered that the manager at that particular Krispy Kreme seemed to be under the impression that you can just delete things from the internet. Sure enough:
I spoke on the phone with Heath, a manager at the Krispy Kreme location who about knew the incident I was describing. He was, however, slightly surprised that I knew of the video. “Actually, that video was supposed to have been removed from the web,” he told me, “so I’m surprised it’s still out there circulating.”
Aaron, who executed the flip heard around the world, is a professional tumbler, and his dance group was once on America’s Got Talent. He described the iconic incident:
Oh my God, let me tell you about that night. So I have a free coupon to get like a dozen doughnuts, so I go, “All right, say no more.” I go make moves — we’re all in line, we’re just talking. I was like, “Yo, I’m about to make a video, I’m about to do a flip.” So I give them my coupon, I’m like, “Stand in line, get the dozen doughnuts, I’m gonna go over here and make this video,” and all that. So it was me and my two friends. I tell them to set up at the table. I was like, “Oh, I gotta get my intro real quick.” I did my little intro — “Back at it again at Krispy Kreme” — and I was like, “Y’all ready?” Then we flipped the camera around. I back up. I told myself, I’m not gonna hit anything. So I do my flip, but the second flip that I did — the back handspring, the back one with hands going into the spin — I stretched it out too long. So when I went into the air and started spinning, my left leg hit the sign off the wall clean, and it dropped behind the counter. And it was like [glass shattering sound effect]. It was packed. There was a good hundred, a hundred and some change, people inside. Everybody was talking. As soon as that thing dropped, everybody didn’t talk for a good 30 seconds. It was nothing but silence. As soon as I landed — I didn’t fall after that, you saw me, I landed on my feet. I looked up and I saw that it fell, I didn’t look at nobody, I just kept walking, and I walked out the door. Everybody was like, “What the heck? Oh shoot, he just kicked down the sign!” Everybody started going crazy.
I was floored to find out the restaurant was so crowded when it happened. Imagine being there that day, witnessing history…
Aaron did delete the video from his own account to avoid negative attention, but it had already gone too viral to die down. Happily he didn’t get into any trouble. Someone did call the sheriff (insane thing to do, be so serious), but they told Aaron, “You don’t have to pay for anything like that, just don’t do anything like that again.”
In the words of Funké in his coverage of the Vine, “and he hasn’t done it since.” But he did keep doing flips:
Asked if he had any other thoughts to add, Aaron stated, as a matter of fact, “Tumbling is life.”
idk i would personally rather give up access to certain products seasonally or locally than have people enslaved to give me the ability to have any product any place any time. i think i can go without tomatoes in january.

before I was diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” and “transsexualism” I got a hysterectomy. this was not easy— medical misogyny exists and I had to assert repeatedly that i didn’t want children and I was married with a spouse who didn’t want children and that I had tried a “less invasive” solution first. all this sucked. it was paternalistic and condescending and led to me suffering for years for zero reason.
however. if I hadn’t gotten the hysterectomy back then and was trying to get one now, it would be harder. after becoming recognized as trans in medial systems, legally I would need two separate psychiatric professionals to write letters affirming I’d been under their observation, that I was mentally stable enough to know I wanted the surgery, and that they also believed it was necessary. and I would need to find a surgeon willing to operate on trans people.
like this is the difference. the literal procedures involved in medical transition are not exclusive to trans people. the difference is that these procedures are gatekept from us.
that’s why all the laws banning trans healthcare (in the US, I haven’t read legislation elsewhere) are framing it as only banned when someone has a “gender dysphoria” diagnosis. the point isn’t to stop performing the actual procedures, the point is to deny trans people healthcare because we are trans.
saying “trans people don’t need surgery” is like saying “cis people don’t need surgery.” like obviously not every cis person needs every surgery. but cis people have the right to surgery. and trans people deserve the same right.
Give Lilly Wachowski Her 10 Fucking Million Dollars To Make A Movie What The Fuck Is Wrong With You You Stupid Cunts Like Hello She Made The Matrix Are You Dumb? Do You Not Like Good Shit?
When people bitch and moan that conservative comedians are getting “cancelled” I want to grab them by the throat and scream at them that the Director of The Matrix One of The Most Successful Action Movies Of All Time can’t get funds for another movie because she’s transgender.
