BIOPSY 1
This is the first installment of the Biopsy series, where I'll be reviewing albums by little-known artists. Today, I'll be looking at Wildcard Operator, an artist whose first EP caught my attention. I stumbled across it on Tumblr, and the cover caught my attention—it was so incomprehensible, so strange, and I wondered what might be hidden behind it. (*) is Wildcard Operator's first major release, featuring seven tracks, which we'll now examine.
"Lysergamide" the EP's opening track , sounds like acid trance, like an alarm. The melodies and the speed of everything happening on the track are reminiscent of some kind of chase. This track is quite addictive.
"One Block Until Arcadia" a track that evokes a lot of associations for me. Whether it's some kind of arcade machine in Las Vegas, or it could be the Gravity Falls episode about Rumble McSkirmish, well, overall, the track is pretty cool, if not the best on the album.
"Beautiful Goodbye" is a very atypical and very experimental track for the overall album. It's a breakbeat with a breaking rhythm and a soft, gentle piano in the background, with an equally breaking rhythm. My favorite track on the EP.
"Hypomania" is a track that fits perfectly with racing games. I really like the transition at 0:30; it's very smooth. The city at night, skyscrapers, you're driving, and this track plays. A great picture.
"After Everything" is a great track, very pixelated and straightforward. I really like the cheerful melody and the jaunty snares that match the rhythm. It would be perfect for a Flash game, maybe on Newgrounds. I advise you to upload this track there, maybe it will go into some game.
"Hope" is also a great track, very similar in vibe to After Everything. It's similarly pixelated, but while the former track is more suited to moving around a game location, Hope is more about tension and a fighting game scene.
"What I've Longed for" is the most rhythmic track on the EP, and the last one on it. It's a really cool track, its speed is noticeable compared to the other tracks on the EP. You can dance to this track quite well; it's true EDM.
Verdict:
The tracks have a significant drawback: they all have the same melody and are rather monotonous. The climaxes are practically indistinguishable from other moments, but it's worth noting that Nate is a very promising artist; if he puts in the effort, he'll start producing excellent EDM tracks that are many levels higher. I'm really looking forward to what Nate releases next.
