“Not everyone in the mobs. The higherups in the families, the heads and the capos, they have powers, but the soldiers and and lieutenants do not. It helps keep balance and order.” Cael said. “And that was a messenger imp, they’re harmless by themselves, all flash and fanfare, can’t even interact with anything or touch anyone.” He finished.
“Yeah, I was hoping to introduce you all to that part of our world, later, more slowly, but now you are going to get a crash course real quick in how the criminal underworld has lasted as long as it has.”
Sylvia looked back to Dargor then, her eyes lighting up in the same way they had when she’d first seen the elf- er imp. “So, you have these powers too?” She asked, obviously intrigued by this.
Rachael groaned, having seen the look on her best friend’s face. “Syl, this isn’t fucking Harry Potter. He isn’t about to pull a damn rabbit out of his ass or fly on a broom. They’re talking about a war.”
Sylvia pouted a little and ducked her head. “I know. It’s still a little neat and I’m trying to not think about the fact that my boyfriend has to fight for his life, thank you.”

“Not until we get to the tournament.” Cael said to Rachael as he took the pan and placed it down on the counter. “That’s where the magic and powers get weird and wicked.” Cael said with a nod.
“Thank you Cael, we were trying to downplay how the criminal underworld has supernatural powers.” Dargor said with a sigh before turning to Sylvia. “Yes, I am going to have to fight. And I am going to try to win. Don’t worry though, the big families are all understanding that we don’t kill each other, it’s only going to instill bad blood amidst the rest of the families. It’s the small families that will do what they can to get in.” He said with a sigh.
“Are you being serious right now? What the fuck just happened? Dobby the psycho envelope elf just popped up and said you’re about to die in a bloody war and now you’re telling me mobs all have magic powers?” Rachael ranted as she began to pace, throwing her hands up for emphasis as she ticked off the items on her fingers.
Sylvia bit her lip as she watched Rachael then glanced between Dargor and Caelnas, wanting one of them to respond. Normally she would say her best friend was over reacting... but honestly, this situation was very quickly getting out of hand. “This really does seem like a bit... much.”

“There is a way, yes. Let me do some research, but there’s a few ruins I can explore that may have more information. I’ve been needing to go into them anyways, this just gives me the excuse I need,” the zykomi explained. “You’ll be welcome to come with me, but it will be dangerous.”
“Me? Go into ruins?” Sylvia asked, a bit shocked that the woman would offer to take her. Of course, if it meant learning more about her mother first hand, then she would gladly go. Still, she was rather shocked. “I um.. I don’t have a lot of experience with this sort of thing. Well, none., actually. I have no experience here unless you count the few video games I played as a kid.”

Jaice watched her go, before picking himself up and taking to the air. He flew around the castle, before shifting as he landed, having spotted the balcony outside her room. For now, the dragon would wait there, suspecting she would notice him sitting out there, as the curtains were open.
Sylvia made her way back to her room and sighed softly once she walked in. A quick glance around and she smiled to herself once she noticed the balcony doors open and walked outside.
“Thank you for being there for me tonight,” She said softly.

“I can’t,” Runa responded quickly, attempting to side step around her. He didn’t like having to do this to her, but he also didn’t have much of a choice. “You don’t understand Rachael, there’s a hell of a lot more going on. The moment the party is over, what I’m after will be being moved, and we won’t have a lead on where it goes,” he continued, his voice low, before he cursed as he heard footsteps down the hall.
“Then by all means, explain to me why you’re trying to ruin my event with one of your jobs,” Rachael snapped angrily as she placed her hands on her hips, still attempting to block the doorway, though she probably wasn’t much of an imposing figure standing there in her floor length red cocktail dress and black stilettos.
At hearing him curse, her frown only deepened. “What? Mad I’m not budging? I’ve told you before that I’m not of fan of your thief games, but I let it slide since it’s usually horrible people, but not tonight!” She added, obviously having not heard the footsteps behind her.
Three’s a Crowd
warriors-of-ayica:
“Actually, I have to do this,” he answered, quickly stepping back towards her before she actually yanked on his tail. “I’m not going to mess up the event. Your biggest sponsor is not my target anyways. He’s not the only one keeping things here though, and I’m here for one of his more criminal compatriots,” he explained, his voice low. “My orders require me to hit tonight, before the evidence is moved.”
That didn’t calm Rachael in the least, which was obvious by her expression. “Runa, please, I am begging you. This event is huge for me. Can’t you wait until it’s over? Strike tomorrow or something!” She snapped as she scrambled to try and close the door so that he couldn’t get in front of her and get to wherever he was going.

As she spoke, and as she was crowned, Jaice stayed quiet, sitting behind her, present, but not a threat. As long as nothing happened, he had no reason to do any more, beyond be present as support for her. Even when she was crowned, he did nothing more than stand straighter, his attention mainly on her, though he still watched the audience.
Sylvia waited as the priest said a prayer for her rule then stood and bowed her head the the gathered crowd before slowly exiting back towards the grand hall once more, letting out a nervous breath once she had stepped through the doors.

“I’m not sure what to tell you, Sylvia, beyond the fact that you came in with a locket with a demon clan symbol on the outside, another on the inside, and you had a reaction when that symbol was revealed, leaving your eyes red,” Quinlin pointed out, shaking her head. “Now, I’m just an archaeologist, but that seems quite suspect to me…”
“I-I... but, there has to be a way to learn more,” Sylvia insisted. “I don’t know anything about my mother other than she died giving birth to me. This necklace was with her belongings in a trunk locked away. My father always refused to talk about her, so I can’t go to him even if we were on speaking terms. Please.. isn’t there anything else you can do to help me learn more?”

Dargor shook his head. “If I don’t participate, that will be a sign of weakness and the other families will turn on us and I will certainly die. And yes Rachael I did, because when this tournament begins, you will see just how apt that description is.” He said before standing. “But I’m getting ahead of myself, it might, although slim, be an invitation to a cocktail party.” He said without any enthusiasm.
Dargor lifted the envelope and opened it, breaking the seal before a flash of light filled the room and a small imp like creature sat on the table. “Took ya long enough bucko. And you had it right the first time. The old man kicked the bucket and the Grand Choosing Tournament will begin in one week. Best get your affairs in order, your powers amped, and your body ready. This year is gonna be a blood bath.” It said before laughing devilishly before disappearing in a puff of smoke, leaving behind a very official looking letter on solid gold paper.
Rachael yelped and jumped back at the sight of the tiny creature, immediately yanking a pan up that was still sitting on the counter from breakfast to hold in front of her as a makeshift weapon as it spoke.
Sylvia, on the other hand, gasped and leaned in closer, obviously rather intrigued by the little guy. Of course, that attitude switched quickly as she processed his words.
“Okay, is that gonna happen often?” Rachael huffed as she gestured to the quickly dispersing smoke with the pan still in her hands.
“So you’re really going to have to fight?” Sylvia asked as she turned to look up at Dargor, her worry plain to see in her eyes.

Cael and Dargor looked at each other and sighed as they scratched their heads trying to think of a way to describe it. Then Dargor snapped his fingers as he thought of it. “Have either of you seen the show Yu Yu Hakusho?” He asked with Cael giving a long exasperated sigh.
“Oh come on, it is like the dark tournament and you know it. It’s a tournament like deal where we fight each other and whoever has the most points at the end wins. Except in between fights, anyone from the smaller families can try and take one of our spots by, well, killing us.” He said with a shrug.
“Did you really just compare your life to an anime?” Rachael asked with a sigh, shaking her head in exasperation.
“Y-you could really die in all of this?” Sylvia asked as she stepped closer to Dargor, her worry blatantly obvious. “Is there anyway that you don’t have to compete? Can’t you just decline the invitation or something?”

“They changed when the locket opened,” she explained, still somewhat in awe herself. She’d only heard about stuff like that before, so this was new. “Are you sure your family hasn’t been cavorting with demons in some manner?”
Sylvia looked up at the other, obviously quite distraught over the turn of events. “I-I’ve never even met a demon before. To my knowledge, my family has nothing to do with them. I only found that locket by accident in an old chest of my mother’s belongings.”

Jaice nodded, following behind her until they reached the pyre, stepping out of sight to remove his pants and shift, deciding it would be best to not ruin the clothes that Sara had just made. Once in his dragon form, he moved alongside her, ignoring the comments and whispers from the onlookers.
Once everything was set, Sylvia stepped aside and said a few words before she let the priest give final rights as he lit the pyre. She watched the flames engulf her father’s body with sadness in her eyes, hating that he had been such a cold person.
She waited for several moments before she turned back to address the people standing around. “Thank you for choosing to stay here. I gave everyone the option to swear fealty to my rule. Those of you standing here tonight will work to rebuild this kingdom into what it should have been. My father was a selfish king, one filled with greed so intense he imprisoned an innocent dragon, intent on using him to wage war on our trading partners to seize land and goods beyond our borders. He was willing to sacrifice our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, to fuel his desires. No more. It will take time to repair the damage my father has done, but I WILL right his wrongs. This is my solemn vow to you as your queen.”
And with that, the priest gently placed her mother’s crown upon her head to the applause of the people.

“I could ask you the same thing,” he teased, hugging her back, and only blatantly groping her ass before he pulled back. “I’m helping one of the investors with the money he didn’t want to donate to the scholarship,” he answered, smirking as he spoke. After all, he was well aware that she would see right through that. “You mind keeping an eye out for me while I open this door?” He asked, walking back towards the one in question, four tails swaying behind him.
She giggled at the groping, but just rolled her eyes. “My store is one of the hosts,” She said before she caught the meaning of what he had said. “Wait what? No! Runa, you can’t! You’ll ruin this event!” She hissed as she reached out and grabbed one of his tails to hold him back. “Some of these people are complete dicks, but can’t do one of your jobs tonight! I can’t risk this all going to shit! I’ve worked for months on this event and you’re seriously planning on robbing my biggest sponsor?!”
