Honestly people with EDS/HSD/joint hypermobility are metal as fuck.

I woke up this morning to my left shoulder sliding out of place. Literally sat up in bed, relocated it, grabbed an ice pack and went about making my morning coffee.

That shit would have most people screaming/crying/going to an ER. For us, it's a Saturday morning.

Thoughts on Autistic/Adhd Joestars and eye contact:

Jonathan- doesn't mind eye contact, but doesn't naturally make eye contact, and then upon being told he wasn't doing it enough as a kid, overcompensated by doing too much for a while. Managed to mostly figure out how much is appropriate and when by adulthood, but it's never quite natural for him.

Jotaro - NOT A FAN. Uses his hat to block line of sight as much as possible. When he does make eye contact, there's always a Meaning to it, typically trying to get something across without words during the heat of battle or if he just doesn't want to talk.

Giorno - alternates wildly between absolutely none, (particularly when he's scared and trying to appear deferential) and a 'creepy' staring-into-your-soul thing. Can mask it pretty well if he tries, but it's always an effort and tends to err on the side of too much.

Josuke - mostly seems normal in this regard, but finds himself subconsciously more comfortable talking in situations where there's an excuse to not be making eye contact - someone's driving, they're walking next to each other, playing video games, watching a movie, etc.

Jolyne- similar boat to Jonathan where it doesn't come naturally to her but she can mask it. Figured it out slightly earlier due to better resources and less vague and unhelpful feedback.

Joseph- never looks at a single object for more than a few seconds unless he's hyperfocused, if the object is an eyeball or not is immeterial.

This disability pride month, let’s talk more about the fact that even invisibly disabled people cannot work full time jobs. Let’s talk about how job hunting is a fucking nightmare, how people expect us to be able to work if we’re able to stand at all, how we’re told we’re not qualified for jobs that would be lighter on us physically but the part-time retail position down the road would “love” to have you until you have that job and you’re calling out more than once a month. Let’s talk about how remote work isn’t always an option, how difficult it even is to find remote work, how classist remote work tends to be. When I say “give disabled people enough money to live, zero required qualifiers, zero questions asked,” I mean it. Yes, even they can “technically” work. Capitalism has poisoned society into treating its members like cogs in a machine, and if one isn’t spinning, the immediate reaction is to throw it out.

in our house we have a few categories of stimming behavior.

1. the no category. this is for things that are unsafe. hurting self (head banging, scratching), hurting others, chewing on choking hazards. i know this is excluded in OP’s post, but i’m putting it on my list because if you parent an autistic child and deal with this, you have to be aware that a key to off-limits stimming is redirection. stimming satisfies an important physical and neurological need for the autistic brain, and that behavior is sensory-seeking. if you must say no, please also offer options or help redirecting to appropriate outlets for pressure, motion, rhythm, chewing, etc.

2. the shared space category. listen, i get that a lot of people are assholes about things that aren’t hurting them. that’s not what this category is for. but we have a household with multiple autistic individuals and a work from home situation. “shared space” is the code phrase we use for “please take this stimming to a different location.” sometimes, aural stims like repetitive noises or physical stims like pacing can be legitimately distracting to other people in a room (or car!). in the case of other autistic people, it might even feel painful or mentally consuming. this category is no-judgment “please move to another location to continue stimming this way.” it’s not bad, it’s not wrong, you aren’t being shamed– just do your best to respect others and their needs or comfort, and leave the communal area or lower your volume.

3. the you do you category. it doesn’t matter that nobody else is doing this to feel comfortable or happy– you aren’t hurting anyone else, you aren’t being disruptive in a space other people are using together. go for it.

and in every single category, anger has no place in redirecting a stim. not even the no category. stimming isn’t malicious, there’s no actual moral requirement to be “less weird” or “like everyone else.” even reminders like “you aren’t the only person in this room and that’s very loud” don’t need anger. stims aren’t done at anyone. they’re just the body expressing a kind of neurological hunger, and whether the answer is “enjoy that!” or “this isn’t safe for you to eat (ie, do)” fury doesn’t help.
