The Sanji vs Luffy fight is actually so much more brutal in the manga. Oda zooming in on the faces while the fight happens makes everything feel that much more dire. Nami & her reactions are especially hard to look at. I'm getting teary eyed just from this single panel:

While the focus of the fight is obviously Luffy & Sanji, I have to say Oda's use of Nami here was genius. Without Nami being as scared as she is it would be easy for a reader to downplay the severity of the situation. It would be common for people to read this & not be as effected because obviously Sanji wouldn't actually hurt Luffy...right?

However, because Nami is literally begging Sanji to stop & is reminding the audience about the extent of Luffy's injuries you can't help but let your mind entertain the worst happening here. The air of the entire scene was ripe with the possibility of Sanji hurting Luffy in a really bad way. The dread never really leaves until Sanji is finally being taken away by that carriage either.

Also, because of this & even though us readers understand why Sanji is doing what he is doing you can't even get mad at Nami for slapping the fuck outta him.

Because yeah—WTF dude? You feel just as hurt as Nami here even though rationally you understand Sanji is hurting just as much, if not more!

Oda is so fucking good at setting the tone for a scene asdfghjkl. Shit like this is why he's managed to maintain such a huge amount of success for such a long time. What else could be expected of an author who made the majority of his fanbase cry over a pirate ship though?
