“The White Legs… meant to show respect, bribe me for Caesar’s favor, echoing mannerisms and words … Showed them tech caches, taught them the workings of chamber and powder, spoke of Caesar’s pride in those that used such things… lies. And… and then… they tried to honor me - not the Legion. They brought me before the campfire one night, showed me how they changed themselves, how they wore their hair now. It was like my entire dead tribe in the firelight, teeth grinning red in the dark - eager corpses, blood-covered ghosts.
They… had taken my braids, the way of the Twisted Hairs, as if it showed they were like me, of me… while every knot in their braids spoke of raping, violence - and ignorance of what the knots meant. They thought to show respect… defiled it. Lost myself in trying to read the braids they wove, when I remembered they had put no meaning in it. They had no history of what it meant.
They didn’t even know the insult in the twists, knots… and Dry Wells came rushing back, the White Legs circled like that… It was like looking at the dead of my tribe, reborn as ghosts - hateful, hungry, bowing to Caesar. Another history… gone, carried by me alone.”
finally drew yvette's family: her husband dr. clayton holdren and their daughter, eloise! 🌱 its long but feel free to read some backstory below if you'd like :)
yvette and clayton had very little interaction with each other when she first arrived to the institute with her father. clayton was busy training to become the head of bioscience and yvette was so focused on her internship with robotics, that they don’t formally meet until a few years later.
clayton becomes quite smitten with her after their departments work on a large project together. yvette was still soft spoken and shy in those days, but he noticed she would come up with a keen idea or give invaluable input... he thought she was very pretty and thoughtful despite her shyness... always tried to catch glimpses of her at lunch and talked her up when they had downtime... they got pretty close during that project and the rest is history, as they say.
by the time wilma gets to the institute, yvette and clayton have been married for 2 years and are actively trying to start a family. the undercover operation goes off without a hitch and while most of the scientists get on her nerves, wilma grows to really like yvette.
yvette excitedly tells wilma that she and clayton are finally expecting after trying for so long, and it nearly puts the entire operation in jeopardy. wilma is second guessing everything but.. the minutemen and the railroad have to stick to the plan, they've spent far too long putting things in place and they cannot back out now.
yvette is 3 months pregnant at the time of the institute's destruction. wilma lets the evacuation notice run for far longer than it should, just hoping enough people got out in time. yvette and clayton make it to county crossing after being processed at one of the larger MM hubs with the rest of the institute refugees.
wilma implements a clause that former institute scientists may only stay at MM settlements if they use their expertise to help better the community. yvette assists in creating a rudimentary school and clayton works with farming technology and large scale agricultural projects. eloise is born 6 months after they agent to the surface!
while losing everything is extremely painful, yvette was born and raised on the surface and never fully adopted the institute's line of thinking so she takes a lot of the lifestyle changes in stride. clayton does not like the surface and he has many thoughts about his home and life's work being destroyed but...
there is something about seeing the wasteland through their daughter’s eyes. to see her learning, laughing, playing, running in the sun… she is curious and absolutely fearless. and this awful world isn't so awful to her because it's all she knows. she is their pride and joy. her nickname is blossom 🌸
Tried to figure out a non-ghoulified Charon while trying to stay close to the source material bc I seen a few fanarts from ancient times that looked NOTHING like this guy. Also I love him and am currently projecting onto my F!LW with my old love for Simon Garth the zombie specifically from the comic menace #5 1953 and horror comics in general ❤️❤️❤️❤️ (look him up! My ghoullover LW has this in her collection along with the purple zombie 1950s comics and then some, shes a big zombie and monster fan!) Also a handsome very big cutieful Zombie.
