ngl i have a really hard time respecting or taking seriously anyone who prioritizes like, farm animals or dogs or whatever charismatic animal it is this week over human beings in their activism. like i hear you and those animals deserve rights but do you know what other mammals are currently being tortured and exploited and killed by the Ag industry/resource extraction/capitalism? fucking human people!
i'm involved in a campaign trying to stop a prison being built in my state and the route most promising right now isn't like appealing to the humanity of the people who would be incarcerated, nono who tf cares about that, it's that the construction would be harmful to some dragonfly species that depends on the land the prison would be built on
it's so bleak. there's like no way to do activism that cares about actual people. it's always some circuitous bullshit that's more about wealthy people enjoying the land that would otherwise be used to torture people. people with wealth and power care more about bugs than people.
Ryan Gosling as Holland March in THE NICE GUYS (2016) dir. Shane Black
I honestly don't know if he deserves any of this. Not with everything he's done. But no matter how it starts, no matter how it all turns out for us - it can still end with love. Can't it?
It can end with love, and it can end with kindness. Even as the jaws are closing.
There’s a liquor store near my house that seems to be run exclusively by frat boys. They lovingly curate these bags, which I browsed today while “Oops I Did It Again” played through the store speakers. This is art to me, there is beauty everywhere for those with eyes to see it
The update everyone has been waiting for….
everytime i see this it makes me want to buy from them exclusively

This made me think about this panel from Calvin and Hobbes:
But unlike the adult in this strip, Calvin’s dad actually APOLOGIZED for yelling at him when he saw how guilty his kid was:
thinking about the time I made a post saying I was watching American Psycho and some overactive good citizen came sprinting from the woodwork to go "make sure you remember that the book was written by a gay man and the movie is directed by a woman and it's not glorifying Patrick Bateman!!!" yeah cheers man I was def going to go start killing people with an ax if you hadn't said that
mostly thinking about this because I'm currently reading Fight Club. can't wait to base my entire worldview off of this, the narrator seems like he really has it together
Project Hail Mary (2026) + Tumblr text posts
erika kirk being handed the golden opportunity to be the face of conservatives for the rest of her life and then fumbling it instantly by being genuinely unlikable and off-putting will always be funny to me almost as funny as remembering that charlie kirk got shot in the neck and died
I won't publish the ask (they asked me not to), but I thought I'd still answer it publicly!
no, royalties are not a significant source of income for most authors. if you wrote something like Project Hail Mary, then absolutely, the royalties would be substantial! but that's like winning the lottery. Ryan Gosling is not starring in the movie adaption of most books.
when you sell a book to a publisher, you get what's called 'an advance against royalties'. it's usually split into multiple parts, so you might get one third for the initial sale, one third for the final revised manuscript, and one third on the publishing date.
an advance against royalties is the publisher saying "we believe you will eventually make X amount in royalties, so here it is ahead of time." and then you don't actually see any money from royalties until the advance is paid off. most books do not make enough in royalties to pay off the advance (I have two children's books and one fiction book, and have yet to see royalties for any of them).
advances are still great, but you need to make them stretch! for instance, last year my net income was about 30k Canadian (21k USD), which is fantastic when you consider that I mostly made it through writing. but I'm definitely not a millionaire. I can live off my writing (not trying to undersell that!) but I'll probably remain in a low income bracket for the foreseeable future.
this isn't meant to discourage anyone from seeking out writing as a career! however, there is a reason that many authors have alternate jobs with writing on the side. or, you know, rich spouses.
this isn't me making a fuss about pirating (I've pirated way too many shows to run my mouth on that lmao), but there IS actually a financial incentive to having people buy your books!
buying books shows the publisher that they can make money off you, which means they're more likely to give you advances for future books. and advances are what authors live off (if they don't have a side job). that's why I always push pre-orders so hard! you have to be a racehorse worth betting on, or else they send you to the glue factory....
if I can offer one alternative to pirating: asking your library to stock the book also helps authors, and doesn't cost anything. the only downside is the patience required.
OOPS yes, @stjohnstarling makes a good point! everything I'm saying is from the perspective of traditional publishing, but it's a very different game if you're a self-published author
i would be a kittypet all the way in the warrior cats universe. if i heard a bunch of guys were in the woods killing each other for survival and they think i'm the lame one for getting mediocre banquets i would be like you guys are stupidd and then when the thunderclan medicine cat comes by my fenced lot to pick yarrow i would be like what are doing and shes like medicine so my clanmates don't die and i'm like wow you guys really have it that rough. and she keeps encountering me and one day i'm like why don't you come inside there's plenty of kibble and she averts her eyes shyly and is like ...no that would be against starclan and i'd go To have a little kibble? and she's like You know what i mean. and i do. 5 moons later she is getting adopted by my people and visions of her ancestors still haunt her and she is from time to time like Did I do the right thing...? how could i be so selfish...? and i'm like my toy mouse squeaks
Warrior Cats is one fandom I only know from indirectly from tumblr (though I still enough to enjoy this piece), BUT a tiny interesting side note- - -
I was at the winter MondoCon and noticed a few middle-schooler(ish) children with cat masks and turned out that they are actually Warrior-fans. I got curious and found out that the first three books were republished last year. So it looks like it certainly becoming (or already is) A Thing now in Hungary, too!
I just had to draw the original post because it lives rent free in my head
