Mari Lwyd
A Welsh tradition that consists of a horse skull being mounted on a pole to be carried by someone under a sackcloth.
This folk tradition was first documented in 1800 in J. Evans' book, A Tour through Part of North Wales.
Mari Lwyd consists of groups of people and a horse carrier (the leader) visiting the doorsteps of houses and requesting entrance into the houses through song. The owners of the house are intened to deny entry in response, also in song. This debate is called pwnco. The exchange would go on until either the homeowners let the group in or the group gives up. If the group is granted access into the home they are also expected to be given items of food and drinks like ale. Once invited in the Mari Lwyd would also go about the house scaring children (some adults) and creating chaos.
This Welsh tradition usually takes place around Christmas and New Years, however in recent years this tradition has declined in activity. This is due to the resistance from Christian social beliefs.
