The door to the prison cell burst open.
Blinding light from the hallway pierced into the dark interior like knives and carved forth the image of the darkened rooms sole occupant.
Huddled in a corner, covered in filth, the human prisoner awoken to the sudden commotion.
Before their eyes could adjust the prisoner felt strong hands grabbing him and hoisting him into the air. The feeling of weightlessness didnât last long as they were then slammed back down into a metal chair at the center of the room.
Multiple straps were drawn across their body from feet to chest until the human could not even move a muscle.
Though still dazed from the rapidly unfolding situation, the human heard the sound of footsteps coming from down the hallway outside the cell.
Ryan Facoon opened his eyes to see his primary interrogator standing in the bright doorway.
Combra Task Maker Hol Gaul.
âIf I had known you were coming,â Ryan said as his dizziness began to wear off, âI would have freshened up for you.â
Gaul stepped into the room and without a word struck Ryan across the face with the back of his hand.
Gaulâs voice resounded through the room and his following strikes reverberated down the hallway.
Ryan coughed up a glob of blood and smirked.
âGaul, baby, I can tell somethings on your mind but Iâm not psychic; use your words.â
Gaul punched Ryan in the chest and Ryan vomited from the impact.
âThe target you gave us was not a military convoy!â
Gaulâs fists were clenched so tightly small droplets of blood began falling where his nails cut through flesh.
âIt was a civilian craft! Non-military!â
Gaul began pacing back and forth, his whole body showing signs of barely contained rage.
âI sent them the report I beat from you; everything matched from the ships appearance, to the cargo capacity, to even the names of the officers and yet when they scanned the area again after it had been destroyed there was no trace of any residual weapon signatures.â
He turned on Ryan whose head was still hanging limply towards the ground. âYou told me that ship was carrying weapons being sold by humans to the Coalition!â
Gaulâs breath was not ragged and uncontrolled. This information he had obtained from the spy Ryan Facoon was meant to be his crowning achievement, something to ensure his promotion out of the interrogators chair and into high command. Yet now it appeared that because of this blunder it would instead be his guarantee to the grave.
âHeheheâŠ.â
Gaul turned to see Ryan snickering to himself, his head slowly rising to show that even through the beating he was still smiling.
âYou didâŠ.exactlyâŠ.what I hoped you would do.â
Ryan continued chuckling to himself between violent coughs.
âYou were just SOOO excited to get anything from meâŠ..weeks after beatings and torture gave you nothingâŠ.that when you finally did get somethingâŠyou went straight to your superiors hehehheh.â
Ryanâs grin grew and revealed blood running down his mouth over his teeth making him appear like a savage beast.
âYou were so eager to rise above the shit end job you have that you didnât even do the slightest bit of digging.â Ryan squirmed in his bindings to better see Gaul. âSure, all the information on the surface matched upâŠNames of officers, flight plan, manifest, even the damn coloring of the ship was all the sameâŠâŠand yetâŠ.â
Ryan looked directly at Gaul now and though his eyes were still bloodied Gaul could see the smug look of satisfaction in them.
âWhat was meant to be a weapons transportâŠ..was nothing more than a cruise linerâŠfull of innocent, non-combativeâŠ.human citizensâŠ..â
Ryanâs chuckling burst into roaring mocking laughter. Despite his body being nearly entirely broken Ryan could not help but feel his body swell with joy was his plan, months in preparation, had finally come full circle.
Gaul struck Ryan once more in the stomach and though he coughed blood again he continued his maniacal laughter.
âWhat monster are you?â Gaul shouted, striking Ryan again with his fist. âWhat sort of madman turns on his own people!?â
It took a few seconds but Ryanâs laughter finally died down and he looked at Gaul again, his bloody grin still full as ever.
âYou know my people are famed for going to war, yes?â Gaul looked at him inquisitively and Ryan continued.
âWe love a good fight, but we always want it framed like we were the ones drawn into the conflictâŠ.always the ones who were attackedâŠâ
âSo what better way than to have a few thousand of our own defenseless citizens brutally murdered by the barbarians at the gate?â
There was a long silence that followed. Gaul took several steps back as if struck by the horrifying implications his prisoners statement had.
âMy job was to get the combra government to draw humanity into their war and you helped me do it spectacularly!
"By now news of your attack is circulating around the entirety of human space.â
Ryan strained against his bonds but he leaned forward as far as he could and triumphantly glared at his torturer.
âEvery news broadcast, every terminal page, every data burst sent between planets will be all about how the war like Combra attacked a human cruise liner and murdered everyone onboard!â
âBy the end of the week hundreds of capital ships will be assembled and millions of soldiers ready to crush your pathetic empire into the ashes of the worlds you burned!â
Ryanâs gaze was not that of a madman, lost in the ecstasy of his achievement.
âDonât you see?! Youâve just destroyed your own people!!!â
Roaring laughter once more filled the room as Ryan enjoyed his final victory.
He enjoyed it long enough to feel Gaulâs fist smash into his face with such force that in spun his head so rapidly he snapped his neck from the blow.
The laughter died away and was replaced with the deep gasps of air by Gaul.
He was mad Gaul thought, slowly trying to calm himself down as he left the room; blood droplets continuing to fall from his fists and leaving a gruesome trail behind him.
There was no way humanity could ever defeat the Combra empireâŠ..
