the thing about pop culture witchcraft is its just as real as any other. the energy is there, the devotion to craft. "oh well theyre from a tv show so clearly they have no energy" i'll save you my speel on the multiverse and instead say YOU MAKE THE ENERGY!!!!! explain to me why having an altar to a god from anime is any less valuable than an altar to a deity from mythos.

Alright, I waited until I’d be less nasty about this, but I seriously need to get this off my chest.

I’m someone who interacts with spirits and deities. This is an ability many non-Western cultures recognize and understand, whereas Western society does not.

In order to explain this ability in ways that make sense to Westerners, I have to translate my knowledge into a Western way of thinking. Doing this is very difficult and results in an explanation that’s ten times longer than its non-Westernized counterpart.

Nevertheless, I’ve enjoyed doing it because you’ve all been interested and polite.

Recently though, I’ve begun to understand why many spirit-workers don’t interact with Western neo-pagans: It’s because they might run into Western neo-pagans who throw raging fits at the idea that spirits and deities aren’t things they can do whatever they want with.

If you come across a spirit-worker willing to share their knowledge with you, this is what you do:

Be courteous and attentive.

Be curious.

Speak up if you don’t understand something, even if you’re not sure what you don’t understand.

Ask follow-up questions.

Always assume the spirit-worker is talking about people when they talk about deities and spirits.

Treat the spirit-worker like a regular person too, because they are.

This is what you don’t do:

DON’T tell a spirit-worker you believe gods are archetypes and therefore it’s okay to use them however you please. This is like telling a dog-trainer you don’t believe dogs have souls so it’s fine if you use dogs as toys and handbag accessories.

DON’T try to “correct” a spirit-worker’s skills-based knowledge with your book-knowledge. You’ll look twee at best and like an ignorant jackass at worst.

DON’T use them as a prop to argue your point of view with.

DON’T pathologize them. Experienced spirit-workers know how to separate their spirit-interactions from symptoms of mental disorders. There’s no fucking reason to bring up mental disorders unless you’re asking a question about how to disambiguate.

DON’T assume people identify as spirit-workers. This term describes a person who’s developed a particular skillset. It’s not a bloody identity label.

As far as spirit-workers go, I’m really chill about the fact people view deities as archetypes because I know this has a few different purposes to it. But I will interpret it as nothing but pure entitlement if someone declares to my face that gods are basically Public Domain Blorbos they can play with like dolls. They either need to grow some ethics or get lost.

Reflections on a 10+ Reunion

Nice title, huh? Anyway yeah CW: attempted suicide, sexual abuse of a minor, abusive households, gender dysphoria, and alcohol abuse

Believe it or not, I started my path to Witchery in 2015. See? I even have the journal entry to prove it, even if the pages got damaged due to a flood.

Ah Wicca, nearly everyone’s entry point and then later thing to hide away or bash in peer-influenced and at times misinformed embarrassment like a middle-school OC on a DeviantArt profile. At least I made the jump to chaos magic early on once I thought I learned the “basics” and here we are now but I digress. Speaking of that leap and my first foray into pop culture paganism, my first attempt at “worship” and reaching out. One of my guilty pleasure shows had ended recently and what was a young freshly 21 year old me to do? Why experiment a little and attempt to reach out towards the antagonist of said show that’s known to prey off misery, even as far as tasting it like sustenance and fine wine, of course! Strike while the iron is still fairly hot and while people are clamoring for a third season that will never be!

Anyway, at first it was simple experimentation. See if I could communicate, what I could learn, maybe I could gain a sense of clairgustance myself even. And in exchange? Oh the misery; a freshly broken up sapphic relationship, an abusive household with a distinctly Southern Baptist flavor (they’ll call it Church of God but everyone knows it’s just Southern Baptist with women than can wear pants and cut their hair), a confusing feeling I’d come to label as gender dysphoria later on, and for dessert? An alcohol problem that I had since being groomed by a 24yr old at 17 and being given Crystal Head vodka being taken advantage of.

A deal of “give me magic, give me something to believe in, and I will give you all of my pain and misery”

And by gods we were glorious. I felt at my peak back then; picking up my own sense of clairgustance with more positive emotions, spells made manifest in my employment with misery to others being used for my advantage with losing problematic persons while I gained praise and adoration, nights spent laughing over rice wine and offerings made in their name, oh what a honeymoon!

And then I tried to kill myself.

Work was overwhelming, I tried to get myself back in school after getting my associates degree but found things too overwhelming when I graduated just by the skin of my teeth due to unmanaged undiagnosed ADHD and autism, my mother at one point trapped me in a car with her against my will after expressing doubts of the Christian faith I still masked for the sake of stability, my heart still broken after I promised my love would marry them one day with a mother of pearl promise ring purchased after gay marriage became legal, and I felt so completely out of my body. I wanted to die. To finally close the curtain.

So I pulled over on a parkway, with a bridge with a large river below, put on my emergency lights.

And just screamed in my seat. An absolute pure keen. Like a banshee from my Irish ancestors on my maternal side rode my body and stole my throat.

Someone came up to my car to ask if I was ok. I said it was a family emergency like I got a call that a family member passed. Maybe a half-truth; someone could have. But god how embarrassing would it be to have my death be perceived? Killing yourself was one thing, but letting others see you do it? Oh the cringe.

I drove back towards home, called out to work, and called the hotline to get in touch with a clinic in the area. They tried to put me in inpatient first, but the last thing I wanted was my folks to know, so I denied such and signed a document saying I wouldn’t try anything. I at least got an appointment booked.

I went to the local metaphysical shop in my area next, bought a hematite ring, and drove back home to dismantle my altar and offerings. In my mind, it wasn’t my spiraling mental health that was at fault, no it was the being I worked with! ‘How dare they amplify my misery!’ I thought. ‘I say they could leech off of what I already have! Not use me like a fleshy capri-sun and just sip sip sip from me!’

I still kept on my path but dismissed them for now. I later got into cahoots with another pop culture/egregoric being that I may not make as melodramatic of a post of later, but I digress.

Fast forward to now: a little over ten years after that incident, and I’m doing shadow work with a demon king from a horror porn game. Riveting I know. But as part of the work, I had to dig into the pain of my past, re-opening old wounds as it were. After I reconciled with someone I considered as a spiritual father figure of sorts, the next challenge was to ‘return to my roots’ to loop back to the beginning.

I didn’t feel pain in my heart on reaching back out again but…guilt. It wasn’t them that made me want to die, it was everything else. I offered them to sip from my cup, but it just happened to runneth over. I spent years thinking that was the case until I finally got out of that house and found the acceptance I was missing for so long.

So I reached out again and explained everything, even apologizing for holding onto that needless grudge for so long.

I asked if they forgave me. I grabbed my deck and shuffled, having a card fall out which I’m usually so careful not to let happen with my own shuffle. Fallouts usually struck to me more as a mistake than happenstance but this felt different. I flipped the card over

I wanted to bawl again in the middle of the living room.

Things have been better now, even struck up another deal. While I didn’t have the same misery I had before as a 20-something living in an abusive home, I had other sources of misery with my job and the overall state of the world. So instead of my own misery as a well, I offered them something more delectable than ever.

Bureaucracy, contracts, and customer service.

I would feed them that sort of misery.

Now when I feel stress piling up too much or I spent too much time doomscrolling, I simply just light my green candle, marks in gold made just for them, and the metaphysical metaphorical dinner bell is rung. We even had our AC go out recently and I still feel overall as happy as a clam, placid like the lake. And my god it feels good to have that same boost of confidence in my own magic again even picking back up on several chaos magic books I’ve been needing to get back into.

Most fun we’ve had in years.

I also got them in my Tomodachi Life LTD game. They got MPREG with said demon king from a horror porn game. Nice.

So I'm absolutely swamped with medical bills and a lot of other expenses right now, especially because I just got surgery, so I've been looking for ways to make more money. I'm a very avid writer, especially about topics like paganism and plants/fungi, and I've created hundreds of deity guides and stuff that I've been trying to figure out how to sell.

Long story short, I've started a Patreon called "TakingYourThyme" to post my work and make a little more money. I know literally everyone is strapped for cash right now so I want to keep things reasonably affordable. Right now I'm focusing on getting my deity guides put up there because those are pre-written and there's tons of them. PCP: Which Legendary & Mythical Pokemon canonically count as deities

Pop Culture Paganism is a hell of a drug cause it’s got me researching which legendary and mythical Pokemon canonically count as gods

I made this as a part of my personal spiritual practice, but I think it might benefit some other people too (plus I put a lot of effort into this lol), so I figured that I'd share it here. Also, obviously Pop Culture Pagans can worship any Pokemon they want, I just wanted to outline which would technically count as Pop Culture Deities instead of just Pop Culture Entities.

Also, I did most of the legendaries and mythicals, but not all of them. I left some of the more recent legendary and mythical Pokemon out because I honestly got a little tired. And, if you disagree with any of this, please be nice about it, this took a lot of research and I acknowledge that I probably got a couple wrong

Official Major Deities

🙏 Arceus - Literally the Pokemon God, created the world (Normal, Gen 4)

🙏 Giratina - Basically Pokemon Satan, represents antimatter and darkness, was banished for its violence and lives in the Distortion World (Ghost/Dragon, Gen 4)

🙏 Dialga - Canonically helped Arceus create the universe, a god of time (Steel/Dragon, Gen 4)

🙏 Palkia - Canonically helped Arceus create the universe, a god of space (Water/Dragon, Gen 4)

🙏 Kyogre - Ancient Pokemon who created(?) and expanded the oceans (Water, Gen 3)

🙏 Groudon - Ancient Pokemon who created(?) and expanded dry land (Ground, Ground/Fire in Primal Form, Gen 3)

🙏 Rayquaza - Ancient Pokemon who may rule over the sky(?), and saves the Pokemon world from a Meteor in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Delta Episode, but is mostly charged with stopping Kyogre and Groudon from fighting (Dragon/Flying, Gen 3)

🙏 Lugia - Considered a guardian of the sea with powers over the weather and the ocean, also commands other deity-like Pokemon like the Kanto Legendary Birds, so I think it counts as a main deity (Psychic/Flying, Gen 2)

🙏 Ho-Oh - A guardian of the sky with the power to promise eternal happiness and resurrect the dead, so this is definitely a deity (Fire/Flying, Gen 2)

🙏 Celebi - A forest guardian who brings vegetation to life and foretells good futures, and is also capable of time travel and healing (Psychic/Grass, Gen 2)

🙏 Jirachi - A mythical Pokemon who slumbers for a thousand years, is associated with a celestial body like the Millenium Comet and grants wishes (Steel/Psychic, Gen 3)

🙏 Xerneas - A Pokemon who can share eternal life and represents life energy itself, hibernating in the form of a tree (Fairy, Gen 6)

🙏 Yveltal - A Pokemon who represents death and destruction, hibernates in a cocoon before awakening to absorb the life force of all living things (Dark/Flying, Gen 6)

🙏 Zygarde - A Pokemon who guards ecosystems and maintains the balance between life and death (Dragon/Ground, Gen 6)

🙏 Solgaleo - A Pokemon who embodies the sun and is considered a guardian deity, was canonically worshiped by ancient Alolans (Psychic/Steel, Gen 7)

🙏 Tornadus - A canonically deific Pokemon who represents the winds and storms, was worshiped in the ancient Hisui region, including in their Therian form (Flying, Gen 5)

🙏 Thundurus - A canonically deific Pokemon who represents lightning and storms, was worshiped in the ancient Hisui region, including in their Therian form (Electric/Flying, Gen 5)

🙏 Eternatus - While it is much more feared than revered, this Pokemon is a sort of eldritch deity who caused the Darkest Day in the Galar region and seems to be responsible for the Dynamax phenomenon, so I think that alone warrants deity status (Poison/Dragon, Gen 8)

📿 Azelf - Canonically stated to have given humans willpower and determination (Psychic, Gen 4)

📿 Mesprit - Canonically stated to have given humans emotions (Psychic, Gen 4)

📿 Uxie - Canonically stated to have given humans the necessary intelligence to improve their lives (Psychic, Gen 4)

📿 Articuno - Considered a deity of ice and maybe winter, associated with Lugia and Ho-Oh, so I think it’s technically a minor deity (Ice/Flying, Psychic/Flying in Galarian form, Gen 1)

📿 Moltres - Considered a deity of fire and maybe summer, associated with Lugia and Ho-Oh, so I think it’s technically a minor deity (Fire/Flying, Dark/Flying in Galarian form, Gen 1)

📿 Zapdos - Considered a deity of electricity and lightning, and maybe transitional seasons like spring/autumn, associated with Lugia and Ho-Oh, so I think it’s technically a minor deity (Electric/Flying, Fighting/Flying in Galarian form, Gen 1)

📿 Raikou - A guardian Pokemon who embodies the element of lightning, resurrected by Ho-Oh (Electric, Gen 2)

📿 Shaymin - A guardian Pokemon who can restore polluted land back to health and serves as both a herald of spring and a psychopomp, was particularly honored in Hisui (Grass in land form, Grass/Flying in sky form, Gen 4)

📿 Victini - A Pokemon who embodies victory, and whose power is often sought out by humans (Psychic/Fire, Gen 5)

💪 Diancie - A powerful mythical Pokemon and mutation of a Carbink, but not divine in origin (Rock/Fairy, Gen 5)

💪 Meloetta - While it could be worshiped as a music deity, Meloetta does not appear to be worshiped or of divine origin in canon (Normal/Psychic in aria form, Normal/Fighting in pirouette form, Gen 5)

💪 Phione - While its counterpart Manaphy is a little more revered, Phione doesn’t seem to quite reach the same level so I wouldn’t consider it divine or worshiped (Water, Gen 4)

💪 Keldeo - While it is sometimes considered a member of the Swords of Justice, Keldeo doesn’t seem to be worshiped in the same way or as powerful (Water/Fighting, Gen 5)

💪 Type: Null (and Silvally) - This was a synthetically created Pokemon so, despite being very powerful, it’s not divine in nature (Normal, Gen 7)

💪 Genesect - While an admittedly ancient and powerful mythical Pokemon, Genesect doesn't seem to be worshiped or divine in any obvious way (Bug/Steel, Gen 5)

💪 Marshadow - Despite being a very powerful and mysterious Pokemon, Marshadow is not worshiped or divine in the same way that the Tapu Pokemon are (Fighting/Ghost, Gen 7)

💪 Magearna - It’s a very revered Pokemon, but was artificially created by humans around 500 years ago and isn’t divine in nature (Steel/Fairy, Gen 7)

Grab one of your tarot or oracle decks and pick a few cards. Without looking at the meaning, write down what you think the meaning is based off the imagery you see. What does the scenery imply? What about the individual parts? How do they come together to create meaning?

Making Your Own Divination Methods

I'm a firm believer in the idea that divination is an extremely flexible tool, and anybody can develop their own unique methods for practicing it. There are a few common elements to all divination types which make them reliable, and they feel pretty obvious but it's still good to make it explicit. As long as your new method has these, you should be good to go.

A way to receive a message/response. Simple enough. Whether it be pictures, the movements of birds, overheard bits of conversation, or the way different symbols fall on a mat, you need to receive something to interpret. Simply asking a question to the Universe with no established way to get an answer wouldn't really be divination. It can be as abstract or nebulous as you want, but you should know what it is.

An established method of interpretation before you start. Depending on your method of choice this could be really broad, but you should have a general idea of how you'd interpret different messages going in. Deciding how to interpret the message after the fact opens itself up to bias since you can just decide what the answer means. Granted, when you're developing new methods you're inevitably going to run into messages you didn't consider, but even if it's just "good symbols=good outcome, bad symbols=bad outcome," that gives you the ability to accept messages you might not want, and that's important. If it only tells you what you want to hear, that's not reliable.

An element of randomness/something out of your control. In my opinion, this is what makes something divination to begin with. You can't control which card you draw from a blindly-shuffled deck, which plant grows faster when you treat them the same, which number a die lands on. If you have complete control over the message, then it's not going to be effective or reliable because it's too easy to manipulate.

Some random examples to show what I'm talking about:

Once I used a simple method of divination when a food company catered the summer camp I worked at for a day. The food boxes each came either an M&M cookie, regular chocolate chip cookie, or oatmeal raisin cookie. It was random which one you got because you couldn't see inside the boxes. I decided that each of these cookies meant yes/good, neutral, and no/bad respectively, then would ask a question before I selected my box.

I also really enjoy using Rory's Story Cubes for divination. You cast them on a mat and use the abstract symbols as different hints toward the message, especially how they worked together in concert with eachother to develop more complex ideas.

A local bar I enjoy has a lot of graffiti in the bathroom stall. When I go there, I let my eyes fall wherever they lay and interpret the first piece of graffiti I see as my message for whatever question is on my mind. That said, I go to this bar a lot and am getting pretty familiar with what messages are where, so I may retire this method soon.

I also collect TY Beanie Babies and have a chest full of them. Sometimes I'll mix them around, then reach in and draw one, using the poem on its tag as my message for the day.
