tagging me in posts
if you make a new post specifically to tag me to identify something, it will get ignored. if you are trying to get me to identify something you’ve seen IRL please send it in as a submission
i’m doing this retroactively as well but from now on, all posts will be tagged with the username of the op. please search my blog for the op’s username to check if i’ve already identified a car in a post. if i am tagged in a post i’ve already done, it will be ignored
furthermore, i’ve started a list of the posts i’m most commonly tagged in that i’ve already done. this list will likely grow
1901 Ford Something
Winking Car (corrected with filming car)
This Car Smells Gay People
asks/submission
asks are ONLY for interactions that aren’t ID requests, and will only be replied to if they are genuinely questions, comments, or if you want my opinion on something. if you want me to identify a car from a photo you have, whether it’s a challenge to identify your car, questions about one you saw, or a photo from elsewhere on the internet, you can send me those as submissions. if you send just an ID request in an ask it will be deleted. if you have both an ask and an ID request i might do both in the ask, but would prefer you just send an ask and submission separately
asks will only be open for about a day at a time. i’m only one person and i work full time, so i’ll only be accepting asks when i have the time to get to as many of them as possible. i will update the top of this pinned post with when the asks are going to be open next, and announce when they’re opening a day or two before they do
any submission that isn’t a request will be ignored. essentially the flipside to asks, submissions will exclusively be for ID requests. submissions containing extra questions or comments will all be ignored
submissions will remain open for the time being, until/if it becomes overwhelming
if you see a post with a car in it , you are welcome to tag me in it and i’ll do my best to get to it! if i’ve already id’d it before i may not respond
9 times out of 10 i won’t answer dms. there’s just too many and i already have limited time to do the main point of this blog
i will also probably not answer questions asked in the form of reblogs or replies. this is a side blog so i can’t use replies anyway
if i cannot identify something that i’m tagged in, i will likely just skip it. i am based in the united states, and am therefor most familiar with the US market. i do my best with international markets but am likely to make mistakes. i’m also not great with interiors. i have had a few people offer to help when i can’t identify something, so if that happens i’ll be certain to credit them
i am just one guy, so i may miss things. especially in the case of taggings and submissions, if you send me a post with a ton of cars in it, i cannot promise to be able to get to it, as much as i love committing to the bit. i’ve found that when i try to do a bunch of ids at once i tend to make mistakes when fact checking, and while this is all in good fun i don’t want to set a precedent for screwing up
tags
IDs are tagged with the make of the vehicle, as well as the tag #car id and the username of the op of the post
asks will be tagged with #not a car id, #asks, and the username of the asker
asks about car recommendations will be tagged with #car recs
if/when changes to the tagging system are made this section will be updated!
about me
this blog is run by one single person! i’m in my early 20s, queer and transmasc (they/he pronouns please), living in the northeastern united states. i’ve loved cars since i was a little kid, and started this blog as a joke because i would do exactly this in the tags of posts i would reblog on my main, so i made my silly little side blog that now has 10x the followers of my main. apparently i’m tumblr famous now
FAQ
Are you autistic?
of course
How do you go about identifying cars?
i’ve gone into this in more detail in this post. a lot of it comes from cars being a 20 year old consistent hyperfixation of mine, which is saying something since i’m in my early 20s. my general process goes as follows
1. if i immediately just know it from the database of cars in my brain, double check google images and wikipedia for more exact years, trim levels, etc
2. if i don’t know the exact model or generation but have something like a badge or body style or general scope i recognize, i take to google images to start and go from there. usually it can be narrowed down by enough stylistic cues to find pretty quickly, whether i need to differentiate between different models built on the same platform or just cars that look similar to each other. this is also usually my best bet for identifying cars from non-us markets
3. if i can’t narrow it down from there, i will use google lens or reverse image search to find the source of the original image when applicable. these have very rarely failed me
4. if/when i get something wrong or can’t identify something, inevitably somebody else more knowledgeable in whatever way is applicable gets it, and i’ll try to issue corrections. i know my knowledge isn’t endless so i’m more than happy to admit defeat if i can’t identify something or if i get it wrong. i’m not an expert, just some guy with a passion. i’ve also had a couple people message me offering to help when i get stuck so i may start taking folks up on that
What car should I buy?
you can scroll through the #car recs tag to see me answer this question for others! lots of people have asked me this with different criteria, so this could be a good place to start. feel free to send me an ask if i haven’t already answered in someone else’s ask. in general though, toyota is usually your safest bet. they’ve made basically every kind of car, are pretty available worldwide, are notoriously easy to maintain and hard to kill, and are usually reasonably priced, especially used
What’s your favorite car?
my go to answer is the bmw 507, a two door roadster built for a couple years in the 50s that nearly killed bmw as a company because of the cost to profit ratio. i think it’s the most beautiful car ever built. i am also very partial to 70s and early 80s american cars, minitrucks, kei cars/trucks/vans, 80s and early 90s sports cars, and wagons. i do however have a genuine adoration for most cars. even ones i would never personally own i think have merit and deserve respect, with very few exceptions. i love cars for being cars, these incredible complex machines hand crafted to always be with you through some of your most personal core moments. every car carries the stories and secrets of every person who has driven it and i think that in and of itself is beautiful and extraordinary
What cars do you hate?
i’ve gotten this ask a few times. i really don’t hate most cars, like i said earlier it’s all about the very space cars fill in our lives to me
that being said, teslas can all rot in hell and dangerously oversized trucks can get in line behind them
What do you drive?
right now i’m without a car. my previous daily, a 2001 jeep cherokee sport, died recently. i’m working on getting a killer deal on a 2013 toyota prius c soon, that i’m probably gonna sell for a mk2 or mk3 toyota supra. before the jeep i’ve owned a 2004 subaru wrx hatchback, a 2005 mazda3, a 1999 toyota corolla, and a 1984 mercedes 300d turbodiesel
Can you help me get into cars?
i’m working on it! in the coming weeks i’m planning on putting together a neocities site full of resources and write ups to help people interested in getting more into cars, hopefully spanning everything from history to terminology to the basics of how they work. i may be trying to recruit people to help with this project in the future since i have other neocities projects in mind unrelated to cars. in the meantime, i would highly recommend the youtube channels Donut Media (specifically their series Up to Speed and Wheelhouse) and Regular Car Reviews, especially his longer form video essays. i would also recommend the channels Garbage Time and Aging Wheels for some quirkier projects!
