Show some respect, people.
THANK YOU
The story of Balto is interesting. He led a team of sled dogs across the Alaskan wilderness in the dead of winter with diphtheria antitoxins to stop an outbreak in Nenana Alaska. Diphtheria is a deadly infectious disease that could wipe out a third of a town’s population. It is mostly unknown to the public today because of vaccines. Balto’s body is preserved in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
He’s a big hero of mine!
Let’s not forget Togo! Who, at 12 years old during the serum run, lead his team 200 miles through much more dangerous conditions during the first leg of the journey before Balto ran the last 55-mile stretch.
Togo and Balto didn’t bust their asses for dying children for you to turn around and not vaccinate your damn kids
a while ago i attended this lecture on autism. guy in the audience said he had many of the symptoms that were presented and asked what should he do to get treatment and possibly a diagnosis. instead of answering his question the psychologist went on a tangent about how “the clinic reigns all powerful over guesswork”, and how actually it has become a trend amongst little children on the internet to claim that they are autistic for cool points, and that this hurts real autistic people. no she didn’t tell him how to get his symptoms looked into, she just made it very clear that to her, aknowledging your own symptoms is bad and evil and hurts the poor real mentally ill people.
an ex-friend of mine, then a psychology major and by now probably a full psychologist, once lectured me on how horrible and bad it was that i told her “i probably have some sort of neurodivergency”, and that if i were her patient she would never give me a diagnosis because “you aren’t like this now, but i know that if you get a diagnosis you’ll use it as an excuse to start treating people badly. that’s just how mentally ill people are.”
same ex-friend was extremely disgusted when she found out that fans sometimes make neurodivergency headcanons for characters that have the same symptoms as they do, and that authors sometimes write books with neurodivergent protagonists in stories that don’t focus on that (ex: she seemed horrified that percy jackson has adhd?)
multiple psychologists i’ve seen on facebook agree that they should refuse to treat patients that say “i’m here because i have symptoms of a disorder and wonder if i have it”, and that a patient should arrive to a psychologist as a blank slate.
school psychologist asked me how i was feeling about my trauma situation and i told him i thought my friends would leave me. instead of addressing the issue he said that that no i didn’t, that i was lying, that i had searched “bpd symptoms” online and now i was faking symptoms because i wanted to have bpd, that he shouldn’t have told me he suspected i had a personality disorder because now look what was happening. no, i didn’t search bpd symptoms online. yes, my friends left me, it was a completely founded belief and not a symptom, let alone a faked symptom.
so the next time you hear someone saying they’re “anti self-diagnosis” i want you to understand what they’re saying. what they’re saying is:
- i don’t want people to be aware of their own symptoms
- i don’t think my patients should have access to any information that doesn’t come from me
- i don’t think neurodivergent people should learn how to cope with their symptoms and live “normal” lives
- i think neurodivergent people should be denied a diagnosis because the moment they get one they will become evil and dangerous
- i don’t think people who don’t look like a stereotype could possibly be neurodivergent, even if they have all the symptoms, so i think they are faking it for attention and should be denied treatment
I’ve studied psychology, and I am 100% for self-diagnosis.
I’ve had a therapist tell me that my depression, self injuring, and s*icidal thoughts were normal. That I had all of this because I listened to “emo” music.
I have never opened up to a doctor or therapist again. I’m not sure if I will ever be able to.
To all therapists, counselors, doctors, teachers, parents, and other authority holding adults who tell people that their self-diagnosis is a phase, you are actively harming them. That is emotional neglect and can seriously be traumatic invalidation.
People NEED to know it is safe to explore what is making their life hard, and that they will be heard when they speak up. If you invalidate their experiences, they may not speak up again. You better hope that you were not their last cry for help.
Even if someone acts differently after self-diagnosing or an official diagnosis, it does NOT mean they are faking it. They might finally be letting themselves act normally. They might quit putting on an act for everyone around them, and lean into their diagnosis because for once in their life they feel understood, they feel safe.
And if the self-diagnosis is wrong? They just learned about something other people struggle with. They’ve learned critical thinking skills that can maybe help them better find out what is wrong with them.
Normal people don’t have degrees in psychology. They rely on their own research to diagnose themselves because diagnoses are not accessible. Because therapists gatekeep diagnoses and obliterate people’s trust in the system. If you’re an adult who thinks self-diagnosing is trendy, sit down. You are going to hurt far more people who need help than a misdiagnosis hurts people.
this is a tangent, but I went through this as a teen, and thought I'd never want to do customer service again. But then I did a temp stint answering a customer service line for the government and seven years later I'm still doing it.
when you have a strong union and a boss who supports your rights and your dignity, customer services is actually really, really fulfilling, at least for me.
the above situation is also absolutely MIND-BLOWING to the kinds of people who abuse service workers. I've heard voices go up two octaves when I tell them that their language isn't acceptable and if they continue they will hang up.
"ExCUSE ME? how DARE you? You f-"
[beep beep beep]
last week one of them immediately called back and asked for my manager and like a minute later she called me and said "yeah I hung up on him too."
apparently this is a thing in Japan too, and it gets translated as “Mundane Halloween.” There are so photos online and they’re all so good?????
“Person going to work on a windy day"
“Woman who’s having her bang cut but the hairdresser is nowhere to be found"
"Zookeeper in charge of the pandas"
Here are two more:
"Not pregnant lady when someone yield seat to her on subway"
And my favorite
"Person on thermal infrared camera"
Might share more tomorrow.
Influencers taking selfies at a gym
Starbucks barista working her ass off on Halloween but gotta keep up that smile
Person who sits on wet paint
Person who's still loading
Boyfriend carrying girlfriend's shopping bags
I love these so much
Finally a halloween tradition I can get behind
It looks so fun
exactly why I vehemently support a women’s right to choose, control her own boby and think men need to shut the fuck up about it. Just support her in her decisions.
My kid loves him
Here's the opening to the finale with the background sounds and music stripped away, so you can hear exactly what is being said. This hurt to edit but hearing it like this is an experience...
au where jet doesn’t find out that zuko and iroh are fire nation and when he runs into the gaang he goes ‘oh by the way this is my new friend lee. we met on the ferry ride over here!’ and the gaang and zuko just like awkwardly stare at each other for a really long time
I love it
*in everyone’s minds*
Zuko: Maybe if I just keep up my persona, they’ll believe I’m someone else… Okay, that’s stupid, but what choice do I have?
Aang: …Maybe if we just pretend we’ve never met before he’ll stay nice and we can all keep the peace.
Katara: If he lifts one hand against us, I will freeze them both.
Sokka: Please be a coincidence. Please be a coincidence. Please be a coincidence. Please be a coinci-
Toph: Why is he so scared? Is he shy? Why is Katara so upset? Why is Aang freaking out? Why is Sokka so irritated? And now Jet’s freaking out.
Jet: Do- do they not like him? Do they not like him because he’s my friend? Do they still hate me? Do they hate him because of me? Lee looks like he’s about to pass out? Is he okay?
This needs to be a fic
ACTUALLY SCREAMING
Toph to Iroh: oh hey, you’re that really old guy who gave me tea once
Everyone else: ????

Glasses are the most common disability aid in America.
And some people may say, ‘you would look better without them, have you considered contacts/corrective surgery’, but no one acts like it’s a big deal if you need them, or need some special accommodations because of the condition you need them for, or if you only wear them part time. No one looks at a person wearing glasses and thinks or says ‘that person has both eyes, why would they need glasses?’. No one says a child or young adult with glasses is ‘too young’ to have that problem. No one looks at a person in glasses and assumes they have them because they are fat, or lazy, or trying to trick people into some imagined advantage. Poor or irregular eyesight is a disability that has been normalized to the point that no one thinks of it as a disability any more. Glasses quickly become just a part of the face of the person who wears them, and are solid proof that it isn’t hard for the people of this country to accept and to think of–to acknowledge–that a disability aid, whether part time or full time, is simply an extension of the disabled person who requires it to ease their interactions with the world.
SO IT WOULD BE SUPERB IF PEOPLE COULD STOP BEING SUCH ABSOLUTE FUCK-CLOWNS ABOUT WHEELCHAIR USERS.

You know how long I've been looking for something like this!?
To any sketch artist out there too.
[Image ID: a black woman wearing a plaid shirt and red bandana around her head. Her braided hair is coming out of the top od her head and falling in front of her. Text says "Did you know there's a black-owned stock photo company nappy.co that provides stereotype-free images of black people" /end]
the other day i was trying to find reference images of black people for art things but all i was finding were black-and-white images of white people! love this!!
Also! They accept submissions. If you’re a photographer and want to contribute, the button is on the bottom left of the webpage.

Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!? Libraries literally saved my life as a child!
Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!
I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!
As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)
New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!
Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.
Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.
Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.
I love the library ☺
