“bits to use in everyday conversations”
always remember that if u dont know someones pronouns especially online you should default to she/her
I support the generic femininum
That poor pest control guy did not know what he was getting into, but given the state of my yard i feel like he should have known what he was getting into.
He was going door to door offering to spray the base of the house for pests for a discount rate because one of our neighbors signed up for pest control and he walked down my driveway (covered in spiderwebs), up onto my front porch (covered in spiderwebs), and knocked on my door (covered in spiderwebs) and said "hi, I'm John from the bug company, would you be interested in a discount service because it seems like you may have a spider problem."
And I said, "oh, no, I'm sorry, I won't be spraying for spiders, I like them. I want to encourage them."
And he gave me kind of a weird look and was like "why?" And I was honest and said that they were my pest control, they take care of my mosquitoes and and and flies, and then I kind of laughed and said that I should stop because I know way too much about spiders and if he let me go I'd talk his ear off.
And then he made his fatal mistake and asked what I knew about spiders, and if I knew what kinds of webs he'd walked past to get on the porch and what spiders were in my yard.
So then he got to hear my thoughts on brown vs black widows and why I wished there were as many black widows as there used to be but I had a big beautiful one under my patio table right now and even if I prefer black widows because they aren't invasive the same way that brown widows are i still like the brown widows and i had a lovely one who lived in my patio chair from August until the firestorm in January and she was so good and kept eating cockroaches and had made five big egg sacks and how I was so proud of her and I used to have a lot more orb weavers but their numbers never recovered after the tropical storm last year but I had a cute one on the shed that I took a picture of yesterday and of course there are tons of wolf spiders and jumping spiders and cellar spiders if you wanted to count them too and some false widows but I hadn't seen any of them this year and, well, yeah, anyway they're not actually dangerous mostly and widows want nothing to do with you but a bite wasn't pleasant but much better than a recluse bite but I almost never see recluses around here but i wouldn't, would I, because they're not called brown gregarious spiders, oh and there are black footed yellow sack spiders around and you don't want those to bite you but their little toes are so cute and I'm sorry, sorry, sorry like I said I can go off about spiders, but also I don't want to spray because I've got so many pollinators, I've got a whole wisteria vine full of carpenter bees, actually i saw a male valley carpenter bee last week, did you know they're golden and fuzzy? He was so cool! But, yes, sorry, I won't be spraying but thank you for asking, and I'm sorry I was the crazy spider lady at you!
Extremely adorable fuzzy little creature:

Look, this is basically a kitten:
A goth icon.
Strong, independent women that I don't want to fuck with.
They are delightful and they eat actual pests, I love them.
I had almost this exact conversation with the door-to-door pest control guy last summer, but about the wasps. He was outright confused when I told him that not only was he not welcome in my yard, I'd just put out some fried chicken crumbs for my paper wasps to make sure they built their hives on my property because nothing in his truck made better crop pest control than a hungry nest of Red Paper Wasps, except maybe Ichneumons but have to get rid of the lawn before those will move in-
"Red Paper wasps? Those are very dangerous! They're very aggressive!" he sputters.
"Really? They seem to be quite placid." I indicated the Fine-backed Red Paper Wasp nest about 16 inches above his head under the eaves.
He stared.
I picked up a crumb of KFC from the porch shelf with my finger and held it up. One of the ladies investigated, then landed and sat on my finger and munched happily for a few seconds before returning to the nest.
"Would you like to see the common paper wasps? They've got a great nest going on the side of the garage."
"I'm. I'm good." He said, and left.
Update:
Another pest control guy showed up and knocked on the door and mentioned that he does bug spraying and I just straight up said "oh i'm the crazy spider lady, I like the bugs, that's why I don't mow."
And he said "Well, do you have any rats or other rodents you need handled?"
And I said "No, we have a barn owl living out back. You should see my collection of rat skulls. Do you want an owl pellet?"
He did not want an owl pellet :(
You are a villain famous for “killing” heroes. In reality, heroes come to you to fake their deaths.
Sometimes they try to pay you.
You are posted out by the Hollywood sign tonight, sitting under the frame where the W used to be. It got burnt to a crisp during last week’s big superhero fight. A hero died right where you’re sitting. The whole area’s been closed down until Hero Force can coordinate a recovery effort. Usually it’d be done by now but no one’s willing to touch it until the ash has been completely blown away.
It’s a rule that the world must stand still when a hero dies.
“How much?”
The voice comes from behind you. The lights that illuminate the Hollywood sign are down to hide as much of the scorch marks as possible. You wouldn’t be able to see anything even if you did turn around, so you don’t.
You put some chapstick on, the glide of the balm against your wind chapped lips grounding.
“I said,” the Hero says, voice tightening, “How. Much.”
There’s the sound of gravel crunching now. They’re wearing heavy boots and the scent of fresh blood grows stronger the closer they get. Their breathing is smooth and even which means it’s not their blood.
You put the cap back on your chapstick and tuck it into your leather jacket’s inner pocket. “I don’t take money.”
“Then what do you take?” The Hero rounds the Y and comes into your line of sight. The dark hides most of their features, but you can make out a glittering gold mask and the dull shine of drying blood on their chest plate. Their breathing may be even, but their stance isn’t. They sway in place, back and forth, back and forth. Their arms wrap around their stomach. “I’ve got land. A house. You can have it.”

I work with kids and I've had two occasions where a little boy straight up won't listen to anything I say because I'm a woman. and like yeah he's gonna continue to be raised by terrible role models and probably grow up to be a sexist douchebag but I have three hours a week to get through to him and so far I'm crushing it. I got six year old boys who previously didn't listen to a word I said telling their shitty dads to not speak to me like that. yeah that's right I'm the teacher making your kid woke. go fuck yourself about it.
you left your kid with me and I taught him that women are people. and also to question authority. and also how to kick someone in the nuts. have fun with that.
Do you have advice for people wishing to also learn the skill of getting through to little boys who've been taught not to listen to women?
honestly there's nothing that's going to work for every kid but I've found just turning kid behavior back on them usually works pretty well. like if they say something about "girls are like this and boys are like that" be like why. why. why. why. exactly the way little kids do. they'll try to come up with an answer but usually after like five rounds of me asking why they'll eventually be like huh. idk.
in my case it definitely helps that I teach kids martial arts classes at a boxing gym with a lot of women. so little boys just factually cannot tell me that girls can't fight or aren't strong or something, because they're constantly surrounded by proof that isn't true. also rules are very different in a boxing gym so if a kid is being a little shit I'm allowed to pick them up and put them in upside down air jail. you probably can't do this in most contexts.
I think the biggest thing is that they need to see men and other boys listening to women. they're following the example that's been set for that. at home maybe their dad never listens to their mom, but when they show up at my class all the other boys are following my instructions. peer pressure is real and you can use it to your advantage. I make a point to tell the biggest buffest manliest dudes what to do in front of the little boys. now this works because those dudes already listen to me, but getting any dudes to follow your instructions could probably work.
the best punishment is the natural consequences of your behavior. if a kid isn't going to listen to me, he doesn't get to do class. this works because class is fun and he wants to kick stuff and hit people with noodles. kids want to have fun more than they want to misbehave. as long as listening to me is more fun than misbehaving, they'll listen.
because these boys are learning this behavior from their dads, the dads also tend to be the kind of tough strict emotionally distant parents that would yell at "girly" behavior or crying. even when I'm strict with the kids, I never yell, I obviously never hurt them, and I always listen. they want to yap at me about pokemon or youtubers. it can be tough when they're really sexist at the beginning but eventually they will show you something that their dad wouldn't approve of, whether they want a pink noodle or quietly mention they like a girly show. this is the part where you simultaneously act like it's no big deal while encouraging it. you need show it's completely normal for a boy to want or like that. if you can, bring up another boy or man they know who likes the same thing. I always show off my nails to the kids and bring over the guy who also paints his nails. you'll probably get "boys can do that?" comments and I usually just go "well he's a boy and he did it, so unless his hand falls off right now I think it's okay"
for me, it's always eventually gotten to a point where the boys realize that everyone else thinks it's normal to listen to women, and that if they want to have fun they need to listen too. they also realize that these people and these women are nicer and listen to them more than their dad does. they notice how all these nice people that make them happy talk to women very differently than their dad does. when those boys yelled at their dads for being rude to me, I made a point to thank them and say that they were right and their dads were rude.
encouraging the behavior you want to see is even more important than punishing the behavior you don't want to see. you can't tell kids what not to do without giving them something to replace the behavior with.
people who are just finding out about internet tracking and data mining in the year 2025 and that your special robot friend does not respect your privacy lol
"I asked it but it said no so the mystery is still unsolved" how have you survived to adulthood?
Fun fact: AI doesn't know anything.
I once installed a locally run AI model through Jan and asked it if it had to contact a server to function. It said yes, but still ran when I unplugged the PC.
It gives you the most statistically probable answer based on the data it has been fed. It doesn't think (even if newer models are called "thinking").

Tumblr Advisor Board
I think it could be cool to put together a board of the top Tumblristas in the world, that could see previews of what's coming up and advise on strategic direction. Who should be on it?
Okay, look. We're gonna do it like this, Matt. I used to work in market research. This one is free, next time I expect a month of free premium and if there's a third time I expect a job.
TO EVERYONE ELSE:
A series of ten reblogs is about to follow, since you can only have one poll per reblog. Please answer all ten polls. If you don't see them all, check the notes (this shouldn't take me long so if it's more than like, fifteen minutes since I posted this one they should all be there.)
1) What is the PRIMARY thing you do on Tumblr?
I mostly reblog others' posts
I write original posts
I make/post memes
I make/post images or gifs
I make/post videos
I run a poll blog
I run a gimmick blog
2) how long have you been here?
Under twelve months
1-2 years
3-4 years
5-6 years
7-8 years
9-10 years
More than ten years
I don't remember
3) how old are you?
Under 18
19-28
29-38
39-48
49-58
59-68
I'm one of the Tumblr grandparents
4) thinking about the recent Tumblr feature release/rollback, what did you find most frustrating?
There was no communication before the fact
I felt like the feature didn't take Tumblr users' wants and needs into account
I felt like the feature showed a lack of understanding of Tumblr culture
I felt the feature would hurt Tumblr culture
I felt the feature would hurt Tumblr artists and small makers specifically
I wasn't bothered by the change
It happened so fast I didn't even know until it was all over
5) thinking about the recent Tumblr feature release/rollback, what satisfied you most about the response?
Tumblr staff responded quickly
I felt like we were heard and listened to
It was nice to see our concerns were understood
I wasn't bothered by the change
It happened so fast I didn't even know until it was all over
Other
6) thinking about features you use on Tumblr, what would you like to see improved?
The recent UI changes to reblogging are too confusing
I'd like tagging to be easier
I'd like to see the tagging system overhauled
I'd like to see the reporting/adult tagging system improved
I'd like a separate page for my communities
I'd like to be able to mark posts as for my followers only
I'd like to see the blocking system improved
I'm happy with Tumblr as it is
Other
7) with the understanding that Tumblr needs to attract new users or convert more current free users to paying users in order to stay online, what do you think of Matt's "top tumblrista" idea?
Absolutely not--this is very famously the influencer-hating site
Absolutely not--this site is too diverse for that to work
Absolutely not, for other reasons
I'm actually liking this poll method
The poll method is clunky but something similar would be great
I think the panel of "top users" would be great
I have no opinion on this
8) if you don't currently pay for use of a Tumblr feature, why not?
I have paid Tumblr features
The price point is too high for my wallet
The price point is too high for what's offered
There's nothing offered that I want
I wouldn't pay even if something I wanted was offered
Other
In the following question, "pre-social media" refers to platforms like LiveJournal, forums, alt.net boards, early MySpace, and similar spaces.
9) thinking about the given definition of "pre-social media," how much do you agree with the statement "I think most tumblr users I know would prefer pre-social media to modern platforms like Facebook and X"?
"Strongly agree" is not strong enough
Strongly agree
Agree
Kind of maybe agree?
Neutral/I don't know enough about pre-social media to say
Kind of maybe disagree?
Disagree
Strongly disagree
"Strongly disagree" is not strong enough
10) do you think Matt should just hire me to do this so I don't have to squeeze it around my break at work?
Yes, this was awesome
Sure, you're not perfect but this was way better than what they've done til now
No, but someone should do this
Honestly I'm just sad you didn't give us nuance/bald/vanilla extract/tickybox
Even better, the comments to this Twitter post were an absolute FIRESTORM of mostly dudes explaining to her that dials can’t only have 2 positions (not true) and that it wasn’t a very good piece (not true) that she was being disrespectful to her teacher (don’t care) and that it was a sign of her stupidity/rabid feminism/intellectual laziness/misandry/etc. that she couldn’t see any “middle ground.” It became, in its way, a performance piece. I was absolutely mesmerised, even as I wished I could cock-punch people through the internet.
Personally I hope that knob goes to 11 and stays there.
“Dials can’t have only 2 positions” is also missing the point. Even if it doesn’t have only 2 positions, the point stands that getting less of/farther away from “raging feminist” requires getting more of/closer to “complicit in my own dehumanization.” You should always be at 0% having to be complicit in your own dehumanization.

Screenshot of a Tweet by AlexBertulisFernande saying: "Last week one of my art teachers suggested I 'dial down the feminism.' Today I showed him my newest piece:"
Attached is a digital painting of a silver dial with a green indicator. It is dialed all the way to the right where it says "Raging Feminist". The option to the left says "Complicit in my own Dehumanisation". The piece is titled in black letters: 'Dial down the feminism'
Reblog if you are a human rights extremist who believes that all humans are equal and has no sense of loyalty to nation states.
Despite the occasional silly decision by upper management, I am still extremely grateful to share this community with you all, staff included.
More and more it feels like no place on the internet is safe—everything is Observed, Controlled, and Micromanaged by tech companies and billionaires with overt fascist goals. The Almighty Algorithm chooses what we see, and if the public’s reactions to its incessant advertising isn’t stellar enough, then our responses will simply be suppressed or replaced by AI. Social media more and more is designed to prevent us from talking to each other, and to keep us emotional. Outraged. Alone. All the better to manipulate us.
I’m sure this is all very profitable. But it’s also outright demeaning, and immensely unhealthy both for us as individuals and for our society.
And no, Tumblr isn’t perfect on these counts. But it’s the best option I’ve found, and I want them to succeed. I want Xitter and Instagram and Facebook to die, and I want to see humanity engaging with one another, and with long pieces of text—facts—logic—and empathy, again. If we are to have social media, let it be like Tumblr; or the very best of what Tumblr could be.
So thank you, @staff , for continuing to build this space for us. I hope going forward you run more of these updates by us—the user base that loves this site and wants it to be the very best it can be. Together, I know we can be the next pdf.
Maybe we're already there (2025) Everything exists on the Internet It's infinity on earth It's like heaven Maybe we're already there :)
