The Question by Cully Hamner
Oh hey, it's mine!
"Writers talk a lot about character, about wanting to serve character, wanting to be true to character, and one of the tensions in storytelling is how best to do this efficiently while forwarding the story and plot. I would happily write a scene where we watch Renee Montoya brewing her morning cup of tea; there's character to be learned in that. But unless the tea is poisoned or someone is going to come through the door with a gun in their hand or an alien is going to teleport her to planet Zergrom while she's taking her first sip, it ain't happening. To do so would be indulgent, slow the story, weaken it until it sagged under the weight of its own navel-gazing."
"Outside of prose (and even within prose there are limits), we're bound by the needs of the medium, and those needs are quite literal in some cases – 22 pages in a comic book; 46 minutes (or however many) for television, 120 minutes for a feature film. There's a limited amount of real estate to work with and it can't be spent on those things that are not immediately or eventually important to the story. Good writing will balance these needs and scenes and sequences will serve double- and even triple-duty – providing insight into character while advancing the plot and story and even the thematic elements in play."
Greg Rucka's newsletter Front Towards Enemy 16 - Whackjobs Need Not Apply, September 8, 2025
Me, reading this after just having written a fanfic where I describe in detail as someone brews a cup of tea for Renee: ... oh.
(I mean, Greg's not wrong)
Black Mask: Year of the Villain (2019)
Random story time: The first and last image have the distinction of being the only two Batwoman or Kate Kane pages that I own, and only two DC pages I've got framed. They're also the only two published pages I've got that aren't written by Rucka.
I'm just that obsessed with the house plant and the way Cully draws these two.
(The "Kate, we need to talk/one of my least favorite sentences" is one of my favorite lines between these two.)
“my city” this “my city” that or maybe Gotham doesn't belong to you, Bruce
Just read this issue and did I miss something or is it extremely out of character for Renee to say "I really don't care for you, Batman" (and also disrespect Gordon by saying he didn't actually do his job as commissioner) because I feel like either I missed something or someone missed a big part of Renee's backstory here
My current project and work in progress. Kind of proud of it. I've put a ton of continuity research into this and my other fics over the past couple weeks. It's been fun shaking off the cobwebs and diving back in. More to come.
Chapters: 3/? Fandom: The Question (Comics), Batwoman (Comics), Justice League Unlimited (DC Comics 2024), The Question: All Along the Watchtower Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Kate Kane/Renee Montoya Characters: Renee Montoya, Kate Kane (DCU) Additional Tags: Slow Burn, Fluff, Flirting, Obscure references to canon, Not obscure references to canon, Exes to friends to lovers... or something, Follow up to The Question: All Along the Watchtower Summary:
The day had been saved, the crime had been solved, but the scene remained. With everyone too busy cleaning up the battle damage to the rest of the Watchtower, it didn't seem likely that this mess would be going anywhere any time soon.
And Renee Montoya was very, very tired.
PSA: Renee/The Question is on a variant cover of Justice League Unlimited #10 but isn't actually in the issue itself. So don't expect her to show up at all, like I foolishly did.
😢

Yeah, I'm writing fanfics again for the first time in a decade (?!) I guess I've been inspired lately. I blame SDCC and someone from DC dropping hints that there's some good Renee stuff coming up. Until then, here's some spicy space sheriff content. Enjoy.
Chapters: 2/2 Fandom: DCU (Comics), The Question (Comics), Batwoman (Comics), Justice League Unlimited (DC Comics 2024) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Kate Kane/Renee Montoya Characters: Kate Kane, Renee Montoya Additional Tags: Canon Compliant, Resolving Unresolved Sexual Tension, Mild Humor, Watchtower Security Team, References to The Question: All Along the Watchtower, Space Sheriff Renee Montoya, no real plot, mostly just smut Summary:
Batwoman argues that they shouldn't do this. Reminds the Question that technically, she's her boss. As if it matters in the slightest.
The whole "team up" thing wasn't exactly their idea, after all.
And if this wasn't an anticipated outcome, then it kind of proves the Justice League really did need a better detective watching their backs.

Chapters: 2/? Fandom: DCU (Comics), Gotham Central (DC Comics), Detective Comics (Comics), The Question (Comics) Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Daria Hernandez/Renee Montoya, Kate Kane/Renee Montoya (past) Characters: Renee Montoya, Daria "Dee" Hernandez Summary:
Scenes from the cutting room floor of "begin again." Also, smut.
If Lois Lane was real she would fucking murder Dean Cain.

Chapters: 7/7 Fandom: The Question (Comics), Gotham Central (DC Comics), Detective Comics (Comics), Batman (Comics) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Daria Hernandez/Renee Montoya Characters: Renee Montoya, Daria "Dee" Hernandez Additional Tags: Slow Burn, Canon divergence... kind of, Fix-It of Sorts, Character Study, Angst, Rated M for language, References to Past Alcoholism Summary:
"Tell me I'm not too late."
Renee Montoya has lost too many people while wearing a gun and a badge. If she hadn't stopped "Zero" in his attempt to destroy her life, she could have lost even more. It took a ghost from her past to make her realize not everyone is gone forever. That includes Daria Hernandez.
Batwoman and the Question, remarks by JG Jones @ SDCC 2025
Tomorrow, Cheetah and Cheshire begin an attempt to rob the Justice League.
That means that at some point, the space sheriff and her deputies probably are going to have to show up and try to stop it.
In honor of that, here's a quick sketch I asked Nicola Scott to do at DC's booth during SDCC 2018, of Renee Montoya as the Question.
I'm excited to (potentially, probably) see Nicola draw her again with Greg Rucka on words for a heist book.
It won't be about Renee, but I can't imagine it'll be without Renee. And that's pretty dang exciting.
The first issue of Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League drops tomorrow, written by Greg Rucka with art from Nicola Scott, colors by Annette Kwok, and lettered by Troy Peteri.
Renee or no, it's bound to be good.

Hi tumblr. It's been a while. Here's some new Renee Montoya content from me for you.
