i need everyone to stop thinking that abortion rights are a new thing that women finally have access to. abortion bans are NEW to human history.

i have literally read medieval documents written by nuns and therefore endorsed by the catholic church that contain abortion methods (shoutout hildegard of bingen). abortions were commonplace and generally accessible, though these older methods were nowhere near as effective or safe as modern ones. (i have an inkling of a theory that improvements in abortion effectiveness is why they began to make it a moral issue because it made it harder to force women to have children they didn’t want but i don’t have primary documents to support this argument).

abortion was not a controversial topic until the late 1800s. abortion was not policed until very very recently.
