date: her husband
Wilder tried to fake disappointment but it didn't settle on his face fully. "Oh, Bummer." He said but his tone sounded excited about that factor. "Oh I do, Nevin Langston, Wife of Rhett, goddess on this earth." But Wilders smile widened at her next words and he waggled his brows, "So you think my face is pretty, huh?" He took a step closer to her now, "How are you doing, love? Anything I can help you with. Self control was never my forte. And I'm sure you'd feel amazing at the hands of my dwindling control."
She rolled her eyes so fast that she could have lost an eyeball in the process. His flirting came to no one's surprise, though the direction often baffled her. “ Please stop, while there’s still some dignity to hold onto. ” she interjects, though knows well that her words might as well go in one year and come out of the other. “ Wilder. I’ve known you far too long for these- ” she paused, wondering what to call his antics beyond senseless wit, “ -I don’t even know, but it couldn’t be further from flirting if it tried. I am happily married.” The crude layer to his verbal nonsense made her grimace. Her hand raised to halt his step, maintaining some space between them. “ Do talk to me like the lady that I am. You forget yourself. ”
Tati gave a lazy shrug, "It really wasn't a big deal, just some dude trynna make an advance on me. It was shut down quick and he got his ass thrown out." She stopped walking and looked up at her friend. "I am fine though. I just don't want what happened to Josephina be like.. a reason to keep me under lock and key, you know?" She had lived that before. That's how her ex fiance treated her. She was a prize that was only let out when it suited him. Other wise she was stay stay at the house unless she asked for permission and even then, it was a hassle to get to leave. "How are you doing with all of this? Rhett?"
“ Not a big deal! ” she exclaimed, though kept her voice as even as possible, “ How come this is the first I hear of this? When did it happen? ” Nevin knew there was nothing that she could have possibly done, nor was it a situation that could have been foreseen, but with all the events in town it felt extra important. She nodded at her friend, and wondered if Antonio had assigned her any protection. Asking Tatianna was possibly out of the question, though. Nev knew their husbands were silent creatures when it came to their affairs. “ Oh, I’m - alright? Mainly trying to keep busy and trust in the law. Rhett is- ” Nev shrugged, “ -Rhett, I suppose. He handles things on his own. ” She didn’t want to talk about him, however. Every thought of him felt like she bit into a piece of lime. “ I thought of leaving for a while, but… feels like I’m running away from everything while everyone I love remains. ”
"i'd like for love to be genuine," he mused; it was this quiet, bare thing that sat a little vulnerably in the silence that followed. he'd like that, but he wouldn't know exactly what it looked like. had either never learned it or long-forgotten its tell-tale signs. he followed it up with something drier, something that made more sense coming from him, this ever-poking at his own solemn complexion, "but maybe that's me being too optimistic. what's your experience, then?"
she laughed, and yujin felt like he had done something right. that did radiate from him, this smile he couldn't hide nor tried to as he watched nevin. "the bugs are that intense? you didn't tell me we were in for this dangerous of a trip," yujin hummed. "we'll start a fire, we'll keep safe."
Nevin nodded understanding perfectly, and slightly with agreement. She had once known love that was genuine. A very long time ago, while she threaded through the hallways of high school and adolescence. His image never faded from her mind, and though she grew to love her husband, Nevin treasured the memories of him. At times she wondered if Theo did too. “ I think love can be unique for us all. My husband and I… ” Nevin paused, unsure of how to approach the topic when her feelings had recently become so conflicted. Rhett wasn’t the man she grew to know and love. “ Well, let’s just say we weren’t very conventional. We sought each other out and found exactly what we were looking for. We then put pen to paper that we’d be wed. ” It wasn’t as perfect to her now as it had once appeared. He’d been everything she wanted and as far as she had been aware then, so had she. But the years had stripped away those rose lenses. “ Once we set our expectations we moved onto the falling in love part. ” She turned to distract herself with her drink once more. Desperately urging the emptiness in her stomach to retract. There was no place for it presently. A grin replaced the furrowing of her eyebrows, returning joy to her features. “ I mean, it is outdoors. In the thickness of summer at that. Nothing but predatory bugs ready to feast. It’ll be your job to protect us. You got the muscles. ”
Her modelling days were over, that much she knew. But that didn’t mean that Yasemin wasn’t happy to get back in touch with someone she’d met back when that used to be a dream of hers. Nevin was nice company to be around and even though it took them a good amount of years to get back to this talking place, Yasemin was glad it had happened. That day, however, she was slightly distracted, so when the other asked her a question, Yas was pulled back from her thoughts and to the present moment. ❝ Hm? ❞ She said, prying her hand away from her lips as she’d been gently nibbling on her thumb’s nail. Thankfully, she’d been wearing gel nails for a while now, so she didn’t have to worry about walking around with chapped nail polish. ❝ Oh, I actually like it? ❞ Yas continued, now paying more attention than before. ❝ I think the see-through adds some edge to it. What is it for again? ❞
She glanced back down at the fabric, assessing it for what felt like the hundredth’s time. It was beautiful. Sheer as her wedding veil, and just as delicate to the touch. It was one of the fabrics she picked up while on her last trip to Bursa. The craftsmanship alone spoke volumes for the piece, if the material itself didn’t exceed quality favorship. “ A nightgown. ” she shared, turning to the brunette with a grin stretching her lips. “ I’ve been messing around with some ideas for a… private viewing. If you will. ” Nevin’s face grew warm, though her features didn’t waver. “ I was thinking perhaps a cover up piece, too. ” she went on, shifting away from the topic just as quickly as she’d brought it up. “ Not that it would cover much, but there’s beauty in its attempt. ” A second later, she leaned closer, offering the fabric to her friend. “ Feel the silk. ”
Thomas let her pull him inside without resistance, shoulders easing in the familiar warmth of the house and the sound of her voice carrying through it. He still moved carefully though, like he was worried about taking up too much space or breaking something expensive by accident. “It’s fine,” he said low when she mentioned lunch. “Didn’t wanna intrude none.” He watched her dig through the candy bag with a faint twitch at the corner of his mouth, not quite a smile but close enough for him. The kitchen smelled nice. Always did here. Clean and lived in. Thomas glanced toward the fabric and sewing things spread around, brow furrowing slightly as he tried to make sense of the pieces. “That the stuff for the clothes you make?” he asked, voice plain with genuine curiosity. “Looks complicated.” He meant it too. He’d seen her work before and couldn’t understand how somebody looked at scraps of fabric and somehow saw a whole outfit. At her question about him, he gave a small shrug. “Been workin’ a lot.” Which was true, even if “work” lately mostly meant interrogations, watching people, and standing in rooms that smelled like fear. None of that belonged here though. “Sorry I ain’t come by sooner.” The apology came awkwardly but sincere. He shifted his weight slightly, hands loosely clasped in front of him. “Didn’t mean t’ stay gone that long.” When she asked if he was staying safe, Thomas nodded once without hesitation. “Yes, ma’am.” His answer came immediate and certain. “Nothin’ gets me.” The confidence in it wasn’t arrogance so much as simple belief. Thomas had spent most of his life surviving worse things than Rift Valley.
Nev offered a reproaching look, “ Nonsense. You’re anything but. ” It was refreshing having him back in their home. Complete even, though she knew better than to say the words aloud. Her husband did often warn her to not get so attached. It was one of her few flaws - one she did not apologize for. In her midst of her candy scan, Nevin glanced up to the mess she had left scattered all over her table and floor. Turning her living space into a work space hadn’t been within the plans, but once she gets started distracting herself it was much harder to let go. “ Yeah. Nothing but failure at the moment, but - ” she chuckled, shrugging as some of her frustration emerged. Nevin patted it down as well as she could manage, giving herself enough room to breathe and accept that though she portrayed it - she wasn’t anywhere near perfect. Mistakes, and disappointment danced with the process of harnessing new skills. “ Trade you? ” she teased, settling with an easy smile, “ I don’t know how many more finger pricks I can take. ” And though she used the machine a great deal, there were just certain fabrics she refused to damage and hand stitching was required. Not that she’d gotten good enough at the pattern to have even managed that much yet. Nevin moved to the fridge, pulling out fruits and some marmalade. “ Sleeping good, too? ” she asked, throwing a knowing look his way. The men around her barely ever did that. She moved confidently through her space, organizing a small platter of things to munch on. “ Eat while I make us some tea. ” she instructed, pulling from beneath the island a stool for him. “ Will I be seeing you at the festival? ”
antonio’s attention shifted immediately the second the blue hair band landed between them, dark eyes settling on it with a stillness that spoke louder than most reactions ever could. for the first time since nevin arrived, his appetite disappeared entirely. he knew exactly what it implied. worse, he knew there was truth buried inside her uncertainty, and the realization sat unpleasantly in his chest because nevin was one of the very few genuinely good people left in his life. she had always treated him with warmth instead of calculation, had offered loyalty and honesty freely in a world where those things were usually transactional. seeing vulnerability creep into her now unsettled him more than he expected. antonio remained quiet for a long moment while his mind carefully navigated the impossible balance between truth and protection. rhett was his friend. one of his oldest. reliable in ways antonio valued deeply. but nevin was his friend too, and unlike most people around the organization, she was innocent of what truly sat beneath all their polished lives. she saw long hours, stress, distance. she did not see blood, money laundering, buried bodies, or the kind of obligations that hollowed men out from the inside over years. antonio understood exactly how someone like rhett could drift into compartmentalization so severe it poisoned everything personal around him. he also understood that none of that justified carelessness. especially not toward a woman sitting across from him quietly questioning her worth while still trying to defend her husband in the same breath. “he mentioned the family plans,” antonio answered carefully at last, voice low and composed, though noticeably gentler than usual. his eyes lifted to meet hers fully then, observant enough to catch every tiny shift in her expression. “and for what it’s worth, i don’t think you’re foolish for wanting that with him.” a faint pause followed before he leaned back slightly in his chair, measured and thoughtful. “rhett is…” his jaw tightened subtly around the words. “a complicated man when it comes to balance.” perhaps the understatement of the century. antonio knew better than most how consuming their world became once it truly dug its claws into someone. how easy it was to begin treating personal relationships like things to maintain rather than nurture. the irony of him recognizing that now, after his own failures with tatianna and asena alike, was not lost on him. “he carries a great deal quietly,” he continued, careful not to outright lie to her while equally unwilling to expose truths that would only endanger her further. “and sometimes men convince themselves that compartmentalizing is the same thing as protecting the people they love.” his fingers finally nudged the blue band lightly across the table, expression unreadable for half a second before softening again around the edges. “but uncertainty like this festers, nev.” the nickname came naturally, familiar and sincere. “and you deserve clarity, not management.”
antonio exhaled slowly then, gaze drifting briefly toward the office windows before returning to her. sympathy sat strangely on him, quieter than tenderness but no less real. he understood more than she realized about feeling like an ornament in someone else’s carefully constructed life. tatianna had practically accused him of the same thing months ago, and now here sat nevin voicing a similar ache from the opposite side of marriage. it left a bitter taste in his mouth. “for what it’s worth,” he said after a moment, tone more personal now, “i don’t think this has anything to do with you lacking something.” he held her gaze steadily there, deliberate in his sincerity. “you are intelligent, attentive, beautiful, loyal to a fault, and frankly far more patient than most people would be.” the compliment was not flirtation. antonio respected nevin too much for that. “men like rhett…” a faint, humorless breath left him. “men like us sometimes become so consumed by obligation and pressure that we start responding to comfort poorly. we seek distraction instead of resolution.” his expression darkened slightly then, not angry at her but quietly resentful toward the situation itself. because despite his loyalty to rhett, antonio found infidelity profoundly careless. messy. selfish. especially when it risked destabilizing one of the few stable things left in a man’s life. “i’m not going to insult your intelligence by pretending you imagined this,” he admitted finally, carefully choosing honesty without fully betraying his friend. “but i am telling you not to make decisions tonight based solely on fear.” his eyes flicked once more toward the hair band between them before settling back on her face. “and if you choose to confront him, do it because you want truth. not because you want to punish yourself with assumptions.”
She tasted metal - sharp and bitter - against the sponge of her tongue. Nevin released her cheek and tried to focus on the pain it presented and not the way Antonio stared at the thing, though each second that went on tore at her core. He knew. The realization needed no words beyond that moment. But as he focused on her question, Nevin forced herself to do the same. Wanting a family wasn’t something that had come easily to her, with both having agreed that their focus would remain on business and growing their image and fortune. They had loved that passion in each other. Their lives need not slow but instead would flourish until the roof broke and the skies opened above them. But as the years went by, Nevin’s view began to change. She wanted more. Though she knew their marriage was based on their handcrafted contract - detailed to the bones with love having not made it to print - she had fallen for him. And how couldn’t she, when he offered her the world at her feet? All she had to do was know her place, never ask questions, and live her life as she pleased.
Does he not want a family with me?- the question burned at her lips and she involuntarily sucked in a breath. Distaste spilled over her mouth and her face hardened. Unyielding in defence against herself. She felt shattered, beaten and angry. A large part of her wanted to be one of those women who declined to believe the truth that would make them leave their man's side, but that desperation didn’t live within her. Even when she knew she’d stay. Loyal to a fault, he had said, and though her loyalty wasn’t deserved, the years she’d put in to get to where she was made it too high a drop. Her husband had betrayed her, and she’d make him pay by making him keep every promise he ever made to her. And then make him just as hollow. She held back her tears, refusing to let go of her power and poise in anyone’s presence. Nev had felt enough embarrassment to last her an eternity by merely being present. To believe she had felt so guilty for bearing an innocent attachment for another.
i don’t think this has anything to do with you lacking something. The words made her scuff in disbelief. Was that meant to make her feel better when he just tore her chest apart? Unbelievable. “ A distraction. ” she said, glaring a him, “ Is that what you call it? ” She hated showing anger, but there was a part of her that wanted to punch him though Antonio had done her no wrong. Nevin reached over and took the hair piece, tightening it in her fist before putting it out of their sight. Whoever she was, Nevin hoped, for Rhett’s sake, that it was worth it. It was as though Antonio could read her inner thoughts. His caution sat loosely in her head, but her fire was too bright to tame. She reached for her glass, needing to clear the taste of blood off her mouth, and shook her head. “ Let’s not spoil the day further, yeah? ” She would force herself to let it rest for now.
She took a deep breath as he came to silence, closing her eyes while she disguised herself before him. Voiding herself of all the emotions that threatened to unravel her. To spill her sorrows all over that very floor. She didn’t need an answer anymore. As careful as Antonio was being in his delicately picked words, she knew it was all true. All those endless nights she waited up for him, the excuses that maintained and deception that followed. The soft whispers of compliment, love and care, and the breathless moments that she clung to so dearly. All were tainted and bruised. “ Why don’t you give the dish a try before it goes cold. ” she prompted him, opening her eyes as an easy smile placed over her lips. She had made it so carefully, following every detail of the recipe to a t. It was easier this way. To return to the image that made her strength show, and bury that savaged woman Rhett taunted by calling his wife. “ I have a test on it, so do be honest. ”

"Maybe less not expecting and more hoping and fucking praying. Seems like god took pity on me this week and gave me a treat." Grayson winked at the older woman. "I was looking for Rhett, but it seems like he is fortunately not around." Gray was not handling recent events well, not as he came up in here high out of his mind. The man looked a bit rough, dark under eyes, dishevels hair and a scruffy beard. "You know, if you ever find yourself dissatisfied, I'd be more than happy to bring you to your knees."
Her face screwed up with distaste. She wasn’t particularly religious, though her family did attend church once in a blue, but the perverse tone to his words was abhorrent at best. “ Yeah, no he’s not home. ” she informed, motioning for the male to step into the living room only to stop in her tracks. She knew better than to react, knowing that Wilder got off on saying the first thing that popped into his head when breasts were present. “ You realize who you’re talking to, right? ” she asked, raising a brow. “ Please, and mainly for your own safety, have some self control. I’d hate to see that pretty face all busted up. ”
Tatianna gave her friend's hand a squeeze, "I promise you Nev, I will be fine." At least that's what she delusionally forced herself to believe. "But I will be careful... guess I shouldn't tell you about the bookstore." She let out a sheepish laugh, "But trust, I doubt Nio will let anything bad happen to me."
Just as Tatianna’s words swayed her with some comfort she stopped in her tracks. “ What do you mean? ” she asked, eyebrows furrowing intensely as she awaited a further explanation. Nevin wanted to believe her friend, of course. If they were to find any comfort at all, once upon a time, it would have lied in the assurance that their husbands would keep them safe. But that didn’t seem to apply to whomever was out there now. To get so close that they, not just kidnapped, but dumped and then came back to murder Antonio’s own sister? Nevin refused to believe that they would be somewhat more protected than his own flesh and blood. “ What happened? ”
he rubbed the back of his neck a little awkwardly, was trying to find somewhere to put his hands more than anything. "i'm not really the dating type, you know? i feel like it radiates from me... just this energy that says i'm not really looking for the love of my life right now," yujin mused quietly, shrugged. "so i wouldn't bring anyone else. so you should come with me. and i'd really like that, actually." his words hung in the silence between them for a moment, when he felt he had been too open or eager, but had wanted to be more proactive for once. "glamping," he said, nodded decisively. the word had sounded odd falling from his tongue, if only because he seemed like a glamping guy even less than a camping guy. "can we still do a fire, though? is that too primitive?"
Watching him shift through his discomfort made the corners of Nevin’s lips gradually lift before she pressed them into a tight line. “ Sorry I assumed. ” She said teasingly, though more intrigued than before. The innocence in the response made her want to figure him out. It was purely captivating. “ In my experience, love is oftentimes more transactional than genuine. ” though she spoke the words from experience, there was no trace of bitterness attached to them. People like Nevin didn’t make it a habit of searching for love when they had so much at stake. Contracts made for safer partners with love acting as a gradual benefit. “ Alrighty. Then, let’s plan for it! I’ll find out which week they open. ” Hearing him say ‘glamping’ was much funnier than it should have been, and Nevin quickly found herself choking on her shake with laughter. It took clearing her throat to respond, “ A fire’s good. Especially if we want to keep the bugs away as much as possible! Bug sprays don’t always do it out there. ”

vinny wasn’t supposed to be here tonight. at least, not according to the bruising blooming purple along his ribs or the split in his lip that kept reopening every time he smirked too hard. but sitting still had become impossible after josephina. every second alone with his thoughts felt like being trapped in a car with the engine running and nowhere to drive it. he had failed his sister, his brother, his family. he had not been able to keep her safe. his baby sister. dead. murdered. her last breath had been taken somewhere alone, merciless, and vincent hadn't been able to stop it. it felt like something inside him had been carved out and left bleeding. if he stopped moving for too long, he thought he might finally feel the full weight of it, and vinny wasn’t sure he’d survive that part. so instead, he kept moving. faster. louder. harder. more dangerously.
all the way from street races that blurred the city into streaks of light to underground fights where people hit him hard enough to make him forget for a couple minutes at a time. sometimes hours, depending on if he was out cold. but he'd take anything that made him feel something other than the hollow ache sitting where his sister used to be. the ache that only grew as he replayed bits of their last conversation, the sound of her laughter still ringing in his head, and he hadn't told her he loved her. he couldn't remember the last time he had. did she die knowing? did she live knowing? he'd never know. he'd never get the chance to say those three words to her or even wish her a happy birthday. he couldn't forgive himself. he had failed her...it's all he could think about.
by the time he stepped out of the building he had been for the last couple of hours, the noise of the crowd behind him had dulled into a distant ringing in his ears. one hand pressed against his side as he made his way across the parking lot toward his car, shoulders tense beneath a dark hoodie stained with sweat and a little blood that definitely wasn’t all his. he'd won tonight at the expense of a little more damage to his frame. he looked rough even by vinny standards, busted lip, bruised jaw, knuckles raw enough to sting when he flexed them. but the second he spotted nevin, he still managed to grin. toothy. crooked. he could never quite help himself when it came to her. and of course it would be her, of all people, he'd run into first out of everyone. he hadn't even seen antonio since the news.
but he approaches like he hadn’t just spent the last few hours beating people unconscious. he grunted a bit as he turned to lean his back against cherry, pulling out a pack of smokes, eyes still focused on the woman. "we've got to start picking better places to meet up, love." he brings the cigarette up to his lips, taking a long, slow drag, exhaling the smoke away from her face. "what's got you in my neck of the woods?"
For what felt like half an hour Nevin stood outside of her hair salon, waiting for her husband to appear. As per usual, she’d spent so long getting styled that they had closed with her within. She always compensated her stylist well for staying later than operational hours. Nevin glanced at her phone once more, her last messaged to Rhett going unanswered yet delivered. She sighed, and decided to move about a little. Needing to keep in motion in order to distract herself from her elongated wait. Last they’d spoken, he offered to pick her up and take her for a stroll. Enjoy the scenery before the sun dipped. A little date for them to enjoy without her having to schedule it ahead of time. It’s why she decided to get her nails repainted as well. Green - his favorite color. It didn’t match with much of her attire, but for the next couple of days she could make do.
Only on her rotation of the parking lot did she notice a familiar vehicle ahead and turned to find the owner approaching. Her smile came with ease until she noticed the damage done to his visage, and the way his face screwed in pain as he leaned against the car. Nev's eyebrows kissed with confusion. “ Exactly how would that be? ” she asked, though heat rose to her ears at the endearment. “ Had a bit of free time so I figured I’d get my hair done early. ” she responded, while trying to determine the bruising she saw on his features. Since squinting her eyes to get a closer look at his face wasn’t working well enough for her liking, Nevin moved closer to Vincent and reached for his face. “ Did you run into a bear or something? Should I call animal control? ”
