It's truly incredible on its own that Jonathan managed to hide his journal up to this point in the novel. It's, subtextually, this little piece of evidence that Jonathan clings his life to since he is truly alone in a hostile place. He doesn't trust his mind, but he trusts the words written in the paper.
Moreso, Jonathan constantly writing down everything no matter what happened and his paranoia of keeping the journal close to his person at all times payed off today, now that Dracula has robbed Jonathan of anything he could use to survive if he can somehow find a way to escape.
