people on either side of any argument in all situations are wrong, if you have an opinion you are incorrect without exception, unless your opinion is correct in which case youāre right. Agree? Disagree? I couldnāt care less
Avoid video games that use extrinsic motivation. A video game should at least mostly rely on intrinsic motivation, meaning that the playing of the game itself is the fun part, not the reward you get for playing the game. If you donāt enjoy the gameplay, but you want to earn lootboxes, youāve fallen into the intentionally exploitative system operating within so many games nowadays, and you need to find another game, because youāre not having fun.
It doesnāt sound serious, but this kind of thing can make depression way worse if youāve already got depression.
This post got me to stop playing Overwatch and Iām eternally grateful.
Thatās also a core difference between a game trying to exploit the human brainās tendency toward gambling addiction and a game that exists to entertain.
Like, it may sound like Iām reaching, but op described (pretty closely) the operation of gambling addictions. Itās also why the depression aspect is so real. Youāre feeling a withdrawal, of a sort, when you canāt play the game.
Seriously, keep an eye out for this stuff!

Some rad Dio trivia from JJBA: Over Heaven not many people seem to know/remember about:
Dioās mother was of noble blood (or at least origins) and itās suggested she mightāve eloped with his father
Dio received most of his early education from his mother
He used to be made fun of because of his motherās kindness and naivety in the slums, which is why he thought she was foolish, but retracted (to an extent) on that statement later on in his life
His mother never stopped defending his father, no matter how abused she got
His father selling his motherās dresses for booze was the direct reason for Dio killing him
The 14 phrases used to enter Heaven in Part 6 are in fact a lullaby Dioās mother used to sing to him to help him fall asleep.
His mother was also very pious and would often talk about going to Heaven.
Dio was going to have a sibling (to which he quite caringly refers to as ālittle brotherā or ālittle sisterā) but his fatherās abuse caused his mother to miscarry. He still remembers that 100 years later and wonders whether some of the women heās impregnated couldāve miscarried due to to him being a vampire.
He is aware that he has children, or at least that he got women pregnant (again, he doesnāt know how many of them miscarried/aborted)
He purposefully chose āwickedā women as mothers for his children, thinking they would raise kids better than his own Ā kind mother did (he was even willing to have a child with Enya had she been younger).
Heās not afraid of potentially going to Hell, as he thinks whatever may await him there canāt be worse than his childhood.
Dioās legal name is actually Dio Joestar sinceĀ George did properly adopt him. However, even after the change people at school still called him āBrandoā. (He preferred Joestar over Brando, but ultimately rejected both last names)
Similarly, he would rather call George his father over Dario, but didnāt like either of them.
The primary reason behind his hate for the Joestar family is the fact he considers them to be āinheritorsā aka people who never had to work or fight for their privileges.
He compares Jonathan to his father, who never worked for anything in his life, but at the same time realizes his wish to crush him is similar to his fatherās abuse towards his mother and feels disgusted with himself.
He bears HUGE respect towards Erina, constantly comparing her to his late mother and even calling her a āholy womanā, to the point of getting actual delusions. He doesnāt say a single bad word about her throughout his entire diary. Seriously, people who say Dio hated Erina need to take a moment to reconsider.
The concept ofĀ āholy womenā keeps coming back to him - other women heās called that include his mother, Sherry Polnareff and Holly Kujo. And heās very far from being a misogynist, contrary to popular belief.Ā
Jonathanās unwavering kindness towards him genuinely hurts him.
He says Jonathan is the only man heās ever respected.
According to Dio himself, the reason behind his Standās powers is related to the scene from the manga when he borrowed a pocket watch from Jonathan and never had a chance to return it - he said he āwouldnāt return the watch until it stoppedā.
He believes things couldāve turned out differently had Mary Joestar been there to raise him.
Had he not been a vampire, he wouldāve liked to master Hamon
He wanted to save Holly for the sake of keeping things at peace with Joseph and Jotaro, but couldnāt think of any way of helping her.
He thought there might be some sort of āgravityā between him and Diavolo and wanted to meet him before dying.
It was Erina who saved him on the ship and they both used the infamousĀ āSchrodingerās Coffinā to escape. She just left it earlier. Also, Erina held no grudge against him (again, to an EXTENT)
The last thing he heard/āsawā before falling into 100 years long coma was his motherās request of him becoming a good, noble person who can go to Heaven. Go figure.
original thread by @pukichoĀ and several other users
So the new Vermintide 2 update has the most glorious of hats, a righteous couvre-chef for that most holy of men.
Itās a paid cosmetic though so I will only admire it from afar, which is good for avoiding heretical wordplay I guess.
Minimum wage: $7.25
$7.25 x 40 hour full time work week: $290
$290 x 4 weeks per month: $1,160
In every Southern state (didnāt have time to look at the rest of the country) you can find some sort of studio apartment for around $500 per month, sometimes less than that. Why bother lying about something so easily disproven?Ā
Because Bernie Sanders supporters arenāt going to fact check him, and theyāll ignore any contrary evidence thatās presented to them anyways.
Things like this really tick me off and Itās not political or anything but itās the fact that you think all that money is there. Hereās what I mean;
That weekly check comes to, according to you, 290. Most places DO NOT pay for your half hour lunch that is required by law. So your beginning number was wrong. $7.25 x 7.5 hours a day x 5 days a week only gets you $271.88. Ā Most people in America get paid bi-weekly, so letās double it to get the budget. $543.75. Thatās GROSS, not NET. Out of that comes anywhere between 10% and 15% taxes depending on state so weāll low ball it at 10%. Automatically down to $489.38 a pay check. Now health insurance. Usually anywhere from 70-100 a pay check for the cheapest plans. Again, weāll low ball and go $70. So now we have $419.39 a paycheck. x 2 Ā = $839.Ā
Eight hundred thirty nine dollars. A MONTH.
But again, you seem to think thatās fair. So letās proceed. You say rent is $500? Okay. This person now has $339 left to buy groceries for the whole month, pay utilities, car payment, car insurance, and gas money to get to work.Ā
Those are the bare needs. You have to eat. You have to pay for heat, water, garbage removal, gas and or electricity because apartments do not always include things and rarely all of the above. Most cities in America do not have public transportation. Mine doesnāt despite the fact that our population is over 15,000 people, not counting a taxi. If you have a car, you have to pay that. If you have a car, legally you have to have car insurance. You have to pay that. You have to have gas in that car to get to work to make that money.
Now if you can tell me you can get all of that out of $339 youāre lying.
You are so focused on rent that you arenāt thinking about everything else people have to pay for. Rent was an example. This is a breakdown of the budget you gave me and itās not possible to live off that in 2017 America.Ā
And BECAUSE this person makes over $800 a month, they probably wonāt qualify for financial aid or food stamps. $800 is the line in my state where they wonāt help you. No food stamps, financial aid, or government housing if you make more than $800 a month.Ā
Why does it bother you that people deserve to live above the poverty line?
āLol, Bernie supporters wonāt fact checkā you didnāt even check yourself.
Conservatives donāt even bother checking the definition of āaffordā.
Itās possible to technically have the money for something but not be able to afford it.
The standard for being able to afford housing is if it costs less than 30% of a personās income, since the cost of living is a lot more than just housing.
Minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, 40 hours per week, 4.35 weeks per month totals $1,260 per month. This means that they can afford housing that costs 30% of that, which is $378.
So even if there are apartments for $500 in every state, they still canāt afford anywhere near that.
I fact checked. Are you happy now?
Did that guy not think taxes were a thing? Or insurance? Or other things you need to be an adult?
Bugs Bunny isnāt your conventional trickster god - he doesnāt steal or lie; rather he inflicts on us a societal hubris. He traps us in the rules, conventions and expectations weāve made. Forcing us to go through the niceties of the barbershop or DMV at the times most inconvenient to us. If we didnāt have these rules - if it was twelve thousand years ago and all we had was a snare and a knife, Bugs would be nothing more than a mortal rabbit. But now we have built so much and he has become a god.Ā Ā
Been a while since Iāve seen this good post.

The Stanford prison experiment tapes were so stupid when I watched them in AP psych and so stupid when I watch this film about them. Literally they couldāve all sat and played cards and got $15 a day to tell ghost stories all day and be best friends. But masculinity and whiteness and power created this violent irrationality that positioned young ass men to be met with brutality and trauma and disrespect even when it was obviously taken too far. and it makes no sense. If someone put me in a room with Black girls and said I would get paid $90 a day (thatās the equivalent apparently) to be a prison guard, do you know how fast Iād be sitting with them and learning about them and exchanging Instagrams and like.. sleeping.. like what the fuck was the point of any of thatā¦
My psych teacher introduced us to this study and literally before she showed us was like ādonāt ever confuse a study based on one type of person (white men/boys) to be an example of an Everyman situation. There is strong evidence that if this was recreated with diversity, or even just with girls, that the results would have been drastically different. This is an example of bias and sexism in the medical research community.ā
āOther, more subtle factors also shaped the experiment. Itās often said that the study participants were ordinary guysāand they were, indeed, determined to be ānormalā and healthy by a battery of tests. But they were also a self-selected group who responded to a newspaper advertisement seeking volunteers for āa psychological study of prison life.ā In a 2007 study, the psychologists Thomas Carnahan and Sam McFarland asked whether that wording itself may have stacked the odds. They recreated the original ad, and then ran a separate ad omitting the phrase āprison life.ā They found that the people who responded to the two ads scored differently on a set of psychological tests. Those who thought that they would be participating in a prison study had significantly higher levels of aggressiveness, authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and social dominance, and they scored lower on measures of empathy and altruism.ā http://www.newyorker.com/science/maria-konnikova/the-real-lesson-of-the-stanford-prison-experiment
The thing about this study is that whether or not itās generalizable to the public is debatable at best.
But itās certainly generalizable to the population of people who tend to be drawn to prison system and law enforcement jobs because thatās exactly the demographics that tend to show up in those positions.
I mean, all that along with the fact that the guards were absolutely coached and lead through suggestion to be more aggressive to the prisoner students is what made it escalate as quickly as it did. Itās never been recreated with the same results, and the man who ran the experiment hasnāt done any follow ups himself or really anything other experiments related to it from what Iām aware. Just goes around and acts like heās an expert for doing one flawed morally dubious prison study.
Y'all remember in Fallout: New Vegas where one of the antagonists was that snotty rich bozo who made himself live forever and refused to share the secret of immortality with anyone? And he thinks he should get to rule the world because nobody else could possibly be super smart and special enough to understand his boring, banal ideas or carry out his boring, banal, utterly common vision for humanity?
Thatās basically a blow-for-blow on how the ultra rich plan on dealing with climate change.
And y'all remember also how if you figure out how to kill Mr. House and eat his corpse you get a special achievement?
Fallout: New Vegas is a very good video game, is the only thing Iām saying here.
@lyonsdoctrine
Not to mention, this is the game where after killing and eating said snotty rich bozo? You can look at the two big, powerful nation-states who want to conquer New Vegas for themselves, play them against each other, kick the NCRās ass with robots, and then make New Vegas an independent, free territory.
And the quest name is literally, āNo God, No Mastersā.
Anarcho-Courierism
Fun fact? Josh Sawyer has actually made several statements in support of communist and anarchist ideals, and expressed a lot of interest in that one game design company that was run as a cooperative.
I know people would probably prefer I donāt stink this post up with more developer criticism, but I have to wonder if this isnāt at the heart of why Fallout has, post-New Vegas, become the very thing it was originally parodying and criticizing.
Josh Sawyer, one of the original developers, as you say, could possibly support anarchist and communist ideals.
But then you have Todd Howard, who is clearly a capitalist, and has made statements (in particular, theĀ ādegeneratesā comment at E3, which is a HUGE red flag) that hit at possible support, or even harboring, of fascist ideals.
Given that possibility, the portrayal of the Brotherhood in Fallout 4 makes a horrifying amount of sense. The once-noble faction from Fallout 3 was warped beyond both reason and the willing suspension of disbelief into blatant fascists, because Todd sees no problem with that.
Same with Skyrimās Blades. A formerly noble faction in Oblivion, turned into blatant fascists with a genocidal agenda for no reason whatsoever. Because Todd doesnāt see this as a problem.
He, and all Bethesda writers obviously knew that many players - for whom Oblivion and Fallout 3 were their first Bethesda games - would default to seeing the Blades and BoS as they saw them in previous games; as noble, heroic, and gravitate to following them. Only to find out that theyāre nothing of the sort.
But if anything, the overwhelmingly negative community reaction to the Skyrim Blades, and the less overwhelming but nonetheless present negative reaction to the FO4 Brotherhood, shows that Toddās gambit didnāt work. People saw these factions for who they are, and have rightly criticized them exhaustively.
And I mean, even for people who do like the FO4 BoS, most of them are either diehard Danse fans, or theyāre people who made AUs or mods where Maxson can be overthrown.
That leaves the small remaining minority of FO4 BoS fans, usually the same ones who also like the Blades, as alt-right types and literal fascists.
Friend, I am ALWAYS in favor of anybody stinking up any one of my posts with Todd-shaming. By all means.
BTW, in case anyone thought I was exaggerating when I said that the bourgeoisie all want to be Mr. House when they grow up: I was.Ā Only some of them want to be Mr. House; others want to be the Enclave.

Last year, I got invited to a super-deluxe private resort to deliver a keynote speech to what I assumed would be a hundred or so investment bankers. It was by far the largest fee I had ever been offered for a talkāāāabout half my annual professorās salaryāāāall to deliver some insight on the subject of āthe future of technology.ā
Iāve never liked talking about the future. The Q&A sessions always end up more like parlor games, where Iām asked to opine on the latest technology buzzwords as if they were ticker symbols for potential investments: blockchain, 3D printing, CRISPR. The audiences are rarely interested in learning about these technologies or their potential impacts beyond the binary choice of whether or not to invest in them. But money talks, so I took the gig.
After I arrived, I was ushered into what I thought was the green room. But instead of being wired with a microphone or taken to a stage, I just sat there at a plain round table as my audience was brought to me: five super-wealthy guysāāāyes, all menāāāfrom the upper echelon of the hedge fund world. After a bit of small talk, I realized they had no interest in the information I had prepared about the future of technology. They had come with questions of their own.
They started out innocuously enough. Ethereum or bitcoin? Is quantum computing a real thing? Slowly but surely, however, they edged into their real topics of concern.
Which region will be less impacted by the coming climate crisis: New Zealand or Alaska? Is Google really building Ray Kurzweil a home for his brain, and will his consciousness live through the transition, or will it die and be reborn as a whole new one? Finally, the CEO of a brokerage house explained that he had nearly completed building his own underground bunker system and asked, āHow do I maintain authority over my security force after the event?ā
THE FUCKING PUNCHLINE, IāM ENDED
