In art history, St John the Evangelist can most frequently be recognized by his pet eagle (in one particular painting, he’s even using it as a footrest), but he has other symbols too. He’s often shown holding a chalice with a snake in it, in reference to a legend about St John being challenged to drink a cup of poison. Luckily, God turned the poison into a snake that slithered away, leaving St John free to enjoy happy hour in peace. Sometimes the snake looks more like a mini dragon than a snake, and even when it’s conventionally serpenty, it occasionally acquires a dinky little pair of wings.

The chalice-and-snake symbol may remind you of the Bowl of Hygeia, an image sometimes seen on pharmacy signs. Note, however, that Hygeia’s snake is wrapped around the outside of the chalice, while St John’s snake prefers to use the chalice either as a hot tub in which to recline, or as a supersized cocktail glass, from which it’s popping up its head in the hope of getting a refill.
