Had a thought about how Sophie's world seemingly mirror's Alice in Wounderland.
Like one is about a young girl lured by a cute animal into a word full of rules and adults that make no sense and the closer you look at the rules the more they fractalize and shred apart under inspection. And Alice grows frustrated with their squabbling childishness and eventually starts to rail on the logic and rules at which point the world collapses around her and she wakes up.
In comparison the other story is about a girl lured by a cute animal into philosophical lessons which explain logical models to understand the adults, the world and how she's a character in a book. And when she goes through enough of the lessons she decides to take what she's learnt of the world and applies it, breaking the rules to escape into our world.
They’re weird reversals of each other. Like Sophie and Alice are both stories about kids approaching a confusing and overwhelming world (kinda like a child approaching an adult world) but where Alice pokes fun at the structures of the world and gets subsumed by it in frustration and rage, Sophie who is helped by mentors and teachers, learns to appreciate the weirdness and takes control of the world with info from her teachings.
I mean they’re different stories and Sophie’s might be a pastiche of Alice’s but they’re interesting and opposing ways of looking at the world. Just a thought really.
