I might get some flak for this, but the aborted Weird Route might be even more disturbing than the actual one this time. Like, at least in the successful one, Noelle achieves her deluded freedom with the game confirming her plan worked. I always thought it was a bit of silly convenience that Noelle doesn't seem to change much even in aborted routes, but this one scene completely re contextualized everything. All of Noelle's smiles and tenderness, even the most romantic Suselle scene on the lake in which she is being carried like a princess ready to run away, no matter the route, is ALL an act. Even right off the cusp of losing her mind and nearly drowning, she goes right back to chipper Noelle and the scene plays IDENTICALLY because that is how deep the mask goes. The real Noelle is the one who confesses that she'd rather risk the chance of death than live a second longer acting like she's happy at all. The biggest difference in this route is that she genuinely thought it was possible to take it off for a moment and now knowing it didn't work. It's all back to normal. Fuck man. How is Noelle even going to be the same in this version of the story?
