Cursed Films: The Omen (1976)

Of all the cursed films on the market, The Omen should be way more talked about for how remarkable some of the events that took place are.

The film is based around a family who runs into trouble that starts when the wife, Katherine (played by Lee Remick), gives birth to a stillborn child. To save her from the heartbreak, the husband (played by Gregory Peck) agrees to take on a newborn who’s mother has died in childbirth without his wife’s knowledge that she had lost her baby at all. Things go swimmingly for the first few years of young Damien’s life before odd events and even deaths surround the child and the husband begins to believe that the child is the son of Satan himself.

You could probably figure that a movie about Lucifer’s son could bring a curse on easily. Before production of the film began, Peck’s son tragically commits suicide. On the way to filming, Peck and scriptwriter David Seltzer take separate planes, both of which are struck by lightning, and a third carrying executive producer Mace Neufeld was almost struck as well. During shooting of the film, the hotel where the producers of the film were staying in was bombed by the IRA.

The most staggering part of this alleged curse came after filming. John Richardson, a special effects artist that worked on the film, was in a car accident that resulted in the deaths of his girlfriend and his assistant. Rumor has it that a road sign near the crash site read “Ommen, 6.66 km”, although this has never been confirmed.

So is it a curse? Or just a set of coincidences? That’s for you to decide.

You’ll just have to take my word for it that I didn’t just send these to myself. All these messages were sent over a time span of about 6 months I’d get a couple at a time and I wouldn’t reply but after a month or two I’d get a couple more just like it. It kind of creeped me out but I didn’t think about it too much. But then I got one that said where I lived (the one that says wisconsin) and its not that suspicious because it could be someone I know messing with me but I don’t know any friends that have a dark humor like that and the ones who I thought would had no idea what I was talking about. I blocked the ip address so I can’t get messages anymore because it was just really weird that the person kept coming back every once in awhile.

Three Americans were taken to a hospital in a Mexican village after they became possessed by evil spirits while playing with an Ouija board.

22-year-old Alexandra Huerta, her 23-year-old brother Sergio, and their cousin, 18-year-old Fernando Cuevas were playing with what they thought was a harmless Ouija board in a village in southwest Mexico. Shortly after they began, Alexandra began showing signs of possession; guttural growling and thrashing around in a trance-like state. Huerta’s parents called paramedics after the two boys also began showing signs such as deafness, blindness, and hallucinations. 

A local priest was contacted prior to calling emergency help, but refused to perform an exorcism because they were not churchgoers. 

When paramedics arrived, Alexandra was restrained and given sedatives to prevent her from causing harm to herself.
