Venting about my frustration with the fandom spaces
I won't reveal my exact age, but I'm over 25, and with each passing year, being part of a fandom gets harder for me because I’ve learned to move past parasocial behavior so when I become a fan of something, I find it really embarrassing to see just how parasocial people get—and how few people in these spaces actually know how to be normal fans. You people who do nothing but complain about what you dislike make the experience miserable in fandom spaces every single day.
Some of you need to realize that you are extremely emotionally invested in Hudson’s life and the lives of those around him, yet isn't aware you only like a version of Hudson, the version you’ve fantasized about in your mind. You don't see Hudson as a human being with the right to make his own decisions; you see him as a child, a ventriloquist's dummy, or a character in a story you’ve concocted where you control and dictate his actions. Then, when he doesn't act the way you imagined, you feel the need to complain and have a meltdown every single time.
You are extremely invested in Hudson’s life, yet now you want to complain that he and the people around him are exposing too much of it. Have you ever stopped to consider that you have the option to simply focus on his career and comment only on that? YOU are choosing to get frustrated and focus on his personal life; YOU are choosing this prison.
It is absolutely pathetic to see you commenting about how his life has become a circus or lamenting that everything revolves around his personal life, when in reality, he and the people around him are just doing normal things. You choose to view these completely normal things as a circus, and you choose to focus on his personal life because, I’ll say it again, you see him as a child, a ventriloquist's dummy, or a character in a story you’ve concocted in your head where YOU think YOU are in control. You think you know what’s best for him, you try to dictate his actions, and you feel entitled to be frustrated just because he isn't living his life the way YOU WANT HIM TO. Some of you should try to understand how pathetic this is.
You’re sad and frustrated because YOU built up unrealistic expectations. Many of you need to understand this.
You need to realize that you only like a version of Hudson that you projected in your own mind, and that it isn't normal to get so frustrated and upset just because he isn't living the way you want him to. It isn't normal to hate everyone around him. You don't control his life, you don't know what's best for him, and you certainly don't know the people in his life better than he does.
A lot of you guys are creating your own prison, and now I’m going to give you some options for how to break out of it:
Practice letting go of your interest in his personal life. How do you start? Stay offline for a while, or simply mute any words related to his personal life.
If you truly only care about his professional life as much as you claim to, the option to post ONLY about his career exists. I swear, it really does.
That’s how you stop the parasocial behavior; that’s how you realize you don't need to get frustrated or overly invested in a celebrity's life; that’s how you become a normal fan.
You choose to be miserable, and you make the online fandom space miserable, too.
Anyway, I just wanted to vent a bit about the whole fandom experience.
