I'm Shadow (name is from a whole lot of other accounts before this one so I'm used to being called that). I'm young, but old enough to make my own decisions. This a catch-all, but more affectionately called, non-themed blog.

i am begging film productions to put something in their cups before giving them to the actors. they can be the greatest actors in the world but the minute you give them an empty starbucks cup they cannot convincingly pretend there's something in it for crap
So apparently, over the summer, Quibi (the shortest-lasting streaming service ever lmao) did a quarantine project called “Home Movie: The Princess Bride” where a bunch of celebrities recreated The Princess Bride in tiny chunks at home.
And like there was no permanent cast, all these celebrities seem to have gotten a scene or part of a scene to do (i’m not sure exactly, I did not ever watch Quibi and thus haven’t seen this yet), and then they just… recreated it as best they could. At home. Under quarantine.
So like, you had Jennifer Garner in a blanket cape playing Princess Buttercup AND the Booing Old Woman with a crowd comprised entirely of stuffed animals:

Ok I needed to know the story and
Guy makes a really stupid decision and gets in a car accident -> no real damage from accident but insurance goes up -> starts beating himself up over his stupid decision -> gets depressed -> starts to realize he's single and had crash been worse he'd die alone -> realizes he's never had a relationship or even a crush and starts wondering what he'd want out of a relationship -> starts to realize he doesn't really like girls so he thinks he must be gay -> realizes he likes girls and boys about the same amount, so he must be bi -> later realizes that "same amount" is none at all -> he's ace
i'm going to say something insane. i think the overall pronounced fandom cultural slide away from complex plotty violent work and towards kidfic and coffee shops AUs and cozy domestic romcoms is a symptom of fascism.

Coffee shop AUs are, like... fine. They're not my thing, but they're hardly going to end the world. We don't need to have a moral panic about people enjoying coffee shop AUs. I'm also not about to come for anyone seeking escapism in the current hellscape.
However, I do think it's interesting to examine the tendency within these AUs to project a sort of idyll onto the coffee shop: here is a whimsical place where you can spend time with your friends and potentially meet your true love; here is a world where the greatest dilemma you may face is choosing the right coffee syrup for a new beverage or sneaking your number onto that to-go cup without being obvious.
The fantasy of the coffee shop AU is divorced almost entirely from the reality of an actual coffee shop. There are no abusive, creepy customers or bosses; there is no mention of the barista's wages; we don't see the dishwasher sweating at their station, the cashiers' aching feet; the person whose job it is to clean the (customer-only?) toilets. These topics are Political and Depressing and Must Be Avoided, because Political and Depressing things are antithetical to this kind of escapism.
The coffee shop AU exists, not in a world without capitalism (because this is a setting where commerce is actively happening) but in a world where capitalism has no teeth: a world where capitalism somehow works. In order to be convinced and soothed by this fantasy, you must suspend your disbelief and avert your eyes. You must filter the coffee shop through a neopastoralist lens.
To me, there's something very uncanny about it.

I find the obsession with jews and muslims not eating bacon, and the idea that we are "missing out" to be so stupid.
Firstly there is no mysterious force preventing jews and muslims from eating pork. It's a personal choice. And if you choose not to eat pork because its not Kosher or Halal, you're not missing out as missing out implies you want to but can't.
Secondly, as a jew who doesn't keep kosher and does eat pork, bacon isn't even the best pork product. Like crispy pork belly is better than bacon. Pork floss is even better than that. Like imagine the texture of angel hair/halva fluff but its meat. I fucking love pork floss.
Instead of harassing jews and muslims by leaving bacon on their doorsteps, leave pork floss, specifically on my doorstep and no one elses, please and thank you.
the current twitter discourse du jour is cervical smear tests for some reason and here is my take: there absolutely is a widespread assumption that if you have a vagina and are over a certain age you'll be habituated to vaginal penetration and this is self-evidently heteronormative and sexist and im honestly amazed that more people don't seem to register it fdkjghfdjk
it's not just an issue w smear tests. was investigated for PCOS not too long ago and when i was referred for an ultrasound absolutely nobody thought to mention that it would be a transvaginal ultrasound. if i hadn't happened to do my own research i would literally have found out on the day of the appointment?? i remain baffled by this
anyway a lot of people on twitter responding to 'actually smear tests are painful for some people' with 'oh well I suppose if you have some kind of medical condition it might be painful' and it's well the thing is people with medical conditions exist in real life
oh the other one is 'well the nurse will be super nice and will make sure you're comfortable and will switch to a smaller speculum if necessary' and i'm like you must know that isn't true. like c'mon. even if all your cervical smear experiences have been positive you must be conscious of the fact that some medical practitioners are assholes about stuff like this. a more helpful statement might be 'your nurse should make sure you're comfortable and if they don't then you don't have to put up with it'.
They are doing this discourse again and as a result I have a couple of working examples of the problem described in the OP:
'speculums open you up less than sex' *loud incorrect buzzer noise* what kind of sex? Not all kinds of sex involve penetration. Why are you assuming that everyone who has a cervix is having penis in vagina sex?
'if you can have penetrative sex you can get basic medical care' ok. If I can't have penetrative sex then what??
'so all these people who are afraid to get a pap smear have never had sex?' yes some adults have never had sex. I don't know what's so unfathomable about that.
anyway so i realise the OP is kind of, mid-argument so here is my actual point best as I can express it:
there is a widespread assumption that if you are an adult with a cervix then you will be having penetrative sex and that, therefore, vaginal penetration in a medical context will be no big deal for you.
this is untrue as a) not everyone is having penetrative sex and b) not everyone who is having penetrative sex finds penetration in a medical context painless and untraumatic.
the result of this is that people for whom cervical smears are significantly painful and/or emotionally distressing are not universally properly accommodated and supported in medical settings.
which is a problem bcos the cervical smear is a very important cancer screening and if a person knows or suspects their medical needs will not be accommodated they might opt not to do it.
the frustrating thing about the Epstein files is, while it should be a scandal and does morally implicate a lot of the people in them, a lot of the pop perception of the files is that literally everyone who is in the files is automatically a) themselves a pedophile, and/or b) actively colluding with Jeffrey Epstein.
this is not the case.
that doesn’t mean those people are necessarily innocent, but what they are guilty of (if anything) (a lot of people simply had business dealings with him unaware of his illegal activities and/or fell out with him after finding out he was a pedophile) in most cases is either enabling Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse of teenage girls by turning a blind eye to it (not necessarily actively engaging in it) or hiring him to fix unrelated financial and PR issues, a lot of which was just excessively bland unjuicy boring business stuff, but some of which crossed over into illegal or immoral territory.
but the imagined image of a massive pedophile conspiracy ring spanning every industry with Epstein at its center is not evidenced by the Epstein files. it is a fiction, and conspiracism. Epstein was a bad person, and did a lot of bad things for himself, as well as some shady things for other people, but he is not the puppet master pulling the strings of every industry in America that people want to imagine him to be.
most people who buy into this narrative are not necessarily even talking about Epstein being a Jew or even consciously targeting Epstein for being Jewish, but it is not a coincidence that the paranoid fantasy they are being sold has coalesced around a Jew
