i'm a part-time writer, and i post most of my works on my ao3! i'm recovering from burnout, but i have a LOT of works to catch up on while i work through my hiatus!
i teach art to elementary schoolers through a non-profit, so i don't have reliable income. if you like what i do, you can buy me a coffee! any little bit helps! i don't currently have commissions open, since spoons have been so low i can't reliably get anything finished.

Ok but like. What the fuck is there to do on the internet anymore?
Idk when I was younger, you could just go and go and find exciting new websites full of whatever cool things you wanted to explore. An overabundance of ways to occupy your time online.
Now, it's just... Social media. That's it. Social media and news sites. And I'm tired of social media and I'm tired of the news.
Am I just like completely inept at finding new things or has the internet just fallen apart that much with the problems of SEO and web 3.0 turning everything into a same-site prison?
You're right that the internet is smaller than it used to be, but there's still some cool stuff left in the corners. I'd recommend checking checking out Neocities if you haven't--it's an independent web hosting platform like Geocities of the old web, and there are hundreds of interesting and active pages discoverable both through their search function and through web buttons (links attached to small pictures with the title of a website) within the websites themselves. Here are three examples of web buttons you may find in link pages:
Most Neocities websites have link pages or button collections with anywhere from tens to hundreds of these. Don't be afraid to explore!
If you're looking for something more like a search engine, I can point you towards Marginalia. It's not a particularly smart engine, but it's perfectly usable if you've ever been taught to use search engines back when they were mostly run through keywords instead of full sentence comprehension. There's also an "about" and "tips" section on the front page with more information. The algorithm of Marginalia can be filtered by the user to allow, disallow, or require JavaScript depending on your needs, plus there are filters designed specifically to prioritize web 1.0 sites or mostly text-based ones. It is possible to search for modern websites with it, but it can return websites from just about any decade (since the invention of the web, obviously) so long as they contain the information you're looking for. For example, here are some random interesting sites I've found using Marginalia:
Native Languages of the Americas: Native American Cultures
BASIC HTML COMPETENCY IS THE NEW PUNK FOLK EXPLOSION!
Earthbound Text Labs by Bill Eager
The possibilities for discovery are truly endless.
Now you might want to know about directories. These make browsing for websites easier, but require you to read through and judge which ones to visit, as there aren't algorithms ranking the sites besides the whim of whoever coded the directory. Some of them have themes, others don't. Here are two that I've used:
Yesterlinks Directory
Ichigo Directory
Directories can be harder to come by just by surfing the net, but they aren't impossible to find. Many personal websites have their own directories of interesting sites hidden within them.
Webrings are similar to directories, but are actually more community-based. You have to register your website to be a part of a webring, usually by sending an email to whoever runs it and meeting some kind of entry criteria. For example, my personal website used to be a part of a webring called Sweet Dreams, which was for websites that heavily utilize color palettes and images of cute things, particularly sweets. Webrings will give you access to a widget upon entry that allow visitors and other members to browse between the registered websites in a massive ring, ergo, where the term gets its name. Webrings can have any theme or criteria for entry. If you can make a website about it, you can find a webring for it.
Now, you might be wondering about social media alternatives. I can't offer much, but I can nudge you towards the idea of forums. Here's one I found that could really use some traffic. I also browse a bit on MelonLand forum, which is actually closed right now--it's currently closed on Mondays--but on any other day of the week, you can find a fun community there dedicated to web revival. You can find it through MelonLand's main page. I'd also recommend checking out SpaceHey, which is a MySpace clone that's customizable and easy to use.
I hope this is of some help to you. The internet may feel less magical than it used to be, but that doesn't mean that the spark has completely died out. These types of indie websites need more attention if we ever hope to reverse the damage done to the internet by centralization and corporate interest. People are trying to make the web a cooler place to be, but we're going to have to do the work of finding and interacting with these projects in order to get them off the ground someday.
ALSO you should consider browsing Virtual Pet List and seeing if there are any pet sites you might be interested in playing. There is a whole genre of browser games right under your nose
Getting off of twitter and onto neocities has really healed me and I am so glad to see it is healing other people too ;u; let's retreat into the self-made digital woods and away from corporate bs pls, I am so tired
“Love Languages” are just common couples therapy techniques mangled and repackaged by an unqualified homophobe. Relationships generally need all 5 love languages to be fulfilled, which is to say, everybody needs to communicate with, spend time with, and do things for their partners, and that’s got nothing to do with any special way you communicate affection.
MBTI has been proven completely ineffective at predicting anyone’s success at a particular job, and half the people who take it twice will get different results. Reputable psychologists do not recognize it, and the company that owns the rights to it uses it to scam people. People don’t adhere to strict binaries in basically anything. Very few people are going to be exclusively introverted or extroverted. It’s just astrology repackaged as pseudoscience. Shockingly enough, you can’t boil the complexity of the human experience down to a dozen Types of Guy.
The concept of IQ is flawed from the start— “intelligence” is an abstract concept that encompasses many different skills, from social intelligence to emotional intelligence to the very narrow kind of problem solving intelligence IQ tests generally measure for. It cannot predict how fast you learn, how much you know, or how logical and well read you are. It mostly measures how good you are at solving puzzles. Coincidentally, it’s also a pretty good predictor of income and education level, take a guess why. Most people’s IQ will change throughout their lives, because it’s inconsistent bullshit we’ve only held onto this long because we’re still kinda hoping we can breed the ubermensch. IQ tests and the way they attempt to categorize people are explicitly eugenicist and racist.
BMI was developed by a man known as the grandfather of eugenics, who first of all was a mathematician, not a doctor, and second never intended the formula to be used to categorize individuals. It’s intended to give a rough estimate of obesity in populations, and it’s not even good at that. It hangs around because of fatphobia and insurance companies who want it as an excuse to charge fat people more.
The study which determined people’s prefrontal cortex was still developing at 25… stopped measuring at 25. Evidence suggests your brain probably never stops developing. Stop infantilizing grown adults. This is a branch off from the larger mess of misinformation surrounding fMRIs.
If you haven’t put together what all these things have in common yet, here’s the moral of the story: STOP TRYING TO CATEGORIZE PEOPLE. STOP TRYING TO PUT PEOPLE IN A GODDAMN BIOLOGICAL HIERARCHY. EUGENICS IS BAD, AND WILL ALWAYS BE BAD, NO MATTER WHO’S DOING IT.

next challenge is: fixing things without adding Too Many Words bc i only have three pages left before i hit max lmao
Daylight was only just beginning to break when Lucero finally returned to the cathedral. He froze when he saw Seran still at the altar. The angel was curled up, their back to the window, violet eyes trained on the door.
On Lucero.
“I thought you had abandoned me.” Their voice carried effortlessly across the distance between them. Lucero grimaced behind his mask and quickly crossed to their side, slinging his bag onto the steps.
“I told you I would be back,” he said, words gruff. “Now c’mon, we need to cover a lot of distance.” He pulled a shirt from the bag, along with a hoodie. “Put these on.”
“Why?” Seran asked, even as they sat upright and moved to take the clothes from him.
“Because we need to cover your wings.” Lucero was trying his best to keep irritation from his tone at being questioned when they needed to move, but by the way Seran’s entire being drooped, he hadn’t managed it. “It’s not safe for you to be walking around with your bandages visible, so.” He gestured to the garments in their hands. “Put them on, Seran.”
The angel pouted at him but did as they were told. Lucero crossed his arms and waited. Seran struggled to lift the shirt over his head, and Lucero cursed under his breath. He hadn’t thought about how the angel’s mobility would be affected with their wounds.
“Here.” Lucero stalked up the steps and took the shirt from their trembling fingers. He lifted it over their head, stretching the neck wide to avoid catching. Once it was in place, Lucero bunched up one of the sleeves. “I’m going to move your arm now,” he murmured, wrapping a gloved hand around the angel’s wrist. “I’ll try to be gentle, but you have to tell me if it hurts.”
“It’s fine,” Seran whispered, their eyes wide on the hands holding them. “I’m fine.”
Lucero snorted. Their wings had been clipped. They had been crippled and then abandoned by the only family they had ever known. The knowledge that he had crippled countless angels before was pushed to the side in favor of focusing on the one in front of him. Fine was the furthest thing they had to be feeling, but he didn’t push them. Instead, he just reminded them to keep breathing as he maneuvered their arm through the sleeve. Seran hissed in obvious discomfort, but they didn’t tell him to stop.
“Good,” he murmured. He smoothed his hand down the sleeve to make sure it fit. The angel shivered under his touch, and Lucero clicked his tongue in an attempt to comfort them before lifting his eyes to theirs. “Just one more. The jacket zips, so we won’t need to do this again until I change your bandages.”
Seran only hummed, and Lucero took that as permission. He repeated the same motions with the opposite sleeve, running his hand from their shoulder to their wrist. Another shudder rippled through the angel. Lucero slipped the jacket up one arm, then the other. He darted around to face Seran, gently tugging the edges closer so he could zip it up. He briefly rested his hand at the center of their chest.
“Good,” he said again. Seran only blinked at him, looking dazed. Lucero smirked behind his mask but made sure his voice was neutral when he said, “One last thing.”
The angel frowned when Lucero reached into his bag, and it only deepened when he deposited the custom-made mask into their waiting hands.
“What is this?”
“A mask.”
Their glare was withering, but Lucero only grinned. “Why are you giving me a mask, hunter? The angels will not come after me now.”
“This will help you blend in with the humans, angel.” Lucero nudged their hand to lift the mask closer. “And we don’t know the others won’t come after you once they find out that you’re not dead.”
A bronze thumb traced the edge of the yellow and gold star at the center. “What is this?”
Lucero swallowed. “It’s to help protect you.”
Seran looked up, and he knew their eyes had found the matching star on his own mask. A small smile graced their lips and they held the mask out to Lucero.
“I’ll need help with this, too.”
“Say please,” Lucero said before he could rein his tongue in. Seran blinked at him for a moment, their eyes wide.
He winced and almost apologized, but then his angel asked in a voice so soft, “Please help me with the mask?”
It was easy to settle the mask into place, despite Seran’s extra inches on him. Once it was in place, Lucero found himself sad to see their face covered. Was this how they felt every time they’d met?
“Let’s go,” he said before he could do something stupid like say that out loud. He swung his bag up and allowed the weight to settle on his shoulders. Then, without bothering to ensure Seran was following, he started towards the door. He smirked when he heard them scamper after him.
“Where are we going?”
Lucero glanced back to the angel at his shoulder as he threw the cathedral doors open. “We’re leaving the garden, angel.”
this round was fucking rough lmao i had a few mini crises along the way. and it's technically only v5.5 because v5 never got a full pass because i changed course like halfway through but i left it as it was for posterity purposes. i also had to cut some of my favorite lines bc they no longer made sense so now they live in my 'deleted scenes' folder
i am so close to being done with this part of the application, i genuinely cannot fucking wait
Happy Moon Landing Eve! Remember to leave out milk and cookies for Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, and don’t let Michael Collins convince you to prank NASA!
Sucks how many people were taught that "horses put their ears back when they're mad" but then never taught the difference between "angry backwards ears," "mildly annoyed backwards ears," "pain backwards ears," "concentrated backwards ears," "sleepy backwards ears" and "just happens to be listening to something behind it."
"Horses put their ears back when they're mad" idk man i think it depends
Actually, I wanna talk about the third horse, the one putting its ears back in pain. Over the last 15 years veterinarians and animal scientists have worked out pain scales for most domestic animals by taking photos of the during routine procedures.
We know vaccines painful, and by comparing horses at rest with horses getting vaccinated, we've been able to determine how they express pain visually. By looking at horses with disorders like colic, broken bones, wounds, and so on, we can determine their facial expressions during more severe pain.
At zookeeper school we were drilled through the pain faces of the most common lab animals and livestock. Nowadays I believe this has become a routine lesson in all animal related fields, but the general public still doesn't know that this is a thing that exists.
Here are all the pain face/grimace scales I've been able to find. Please study them if you interact with any of these animals on a regular basis:
I'm sooooo normal about warrior going feral in o!sk about twi.
Man is about to start construction on a house RIGHT NOW. NO ONE tell him twis hungry and his belly aches.
He will harvest and cook pumpkins himself and then massage that tummy by the honor of him being an alpha!!! Its a normal reaction guys!
(Except if any other of the groups alphas eats to provide for twi, then he might bite.)
There are some lines in this that I am D-Y-I-N-G to share with you, but I want the twists to be surprises. So until then,
Twilight instantly gravitated to [Warriors's] familiar touch. He was sluggish, exhausted from the ups and downs of the last several hours, and he sank against him tiredly. He tucked his face into the side of the captain's neck and breathed him in, humming happily at the familiarity of having him near. Across the room, Wild breathed a subtle sigh of relief.
Overwhelmed by the heat in the room, Warriors's mind was swimming through scents and hormones and a deep, howling need that simply couldn't be resisted.
But not right now.
Right now, Twilight needed to rest, and Alpha would watch over him.
Trolling my biologist D&D player by sending the party on a quest to prevent the destruction of a mystical seal, and when they finally get there it quickly becomes clear that I'm actually describing a walrus.
This is the exact opposite energy of the "what happens after the camera cuts and you've destroyed you labtop for 5 seconds of entertainment"
This guy not only wrote a whole song but dressed up and FILMED it! For what! For 1 and a half seconds of MY entertainment! That must have been HOURS of shooting and editing! I'm touched, this is art
I think the most humiliating object in the world is the Fleshlight sleeve warmer
Its only purpose is to slide into your fleshlight and get it to body temp. It's $30. I want to get every single man who owns one of these into one room and make them do long-form improv
