Okay this was originally a post about Mr Snuggles but it has derailed into full William rambling, this is barely coherent and a mess, I’m so sorry
Thinking of the videos in Spiral just of Mr Snuggles moving around and just imagining William spending hours trying to get the frame right
Also the fact that he probably learned puppetry and made Mr Snuggles himself
They discussed in the extra features of the dvd that a lot of consideration went into what William was capable of doing given that he doesn’t have the engineering background that John did. So all of his traps are made with consideration of what pre-existing structures and materials he had access to and could reasonably adapt
So everything he made and did was very much by hand and less complex in a way.
This can be seen in the difference between Billy and Mr Snuggles. Billy is almost an animatronic, he is seen moving on his own and displaying complex mouth, face and other body movements, as well as the ability to make noise. Where as Mr Snuggles is a marionette, with visible strings that control his movements that must be operated by an individual.
The movement of Mr Snuggles also isn’t particularly complex, the only really notable thing being the moment he lifts the gun. But still it requires some understanding of puppetry that William would have had to learn himself.
Also based on the look and design of Mr Snuggles it doesn’t appear that he is a repurposed version of a bought marionette (I may be wrong though), he has notable misshapen features and distinctive weathering that would require more attention to detail.
So it’s likely that William took time to learn and make it all himself, which is just an adorable thought. This deranged killer takes time away from designing death machines and plotting how to do the incredibly difficult task of becoming Zekes partner, to learn at least basic puppetry.
I’d also like to bring attention to the fact that he uses a typewriter. This man writes his little murder notes with a proper typewriter, sure he uses USB sticks with videos and the audio tapes too but in multiple cases there is the presence of a note. With his own fake death and also I believe with Boz (this may have been cut but there is definitely footage of Zeke reading a note).
I just think it’s interesting for him to use firstly such a variety of mediums but also the use of notes several times. John Kramer only used notes in the case of Jeff (I think??) so I just think it’s interesting for a modern jigsaw killer to use what is arguably an older method more than the once.
He’s arguably erratic in his communication methods, switching seemingly at random between them in extremely quick succession. John Kramer stuck to one method at a time for the most part, only showing variation after longer periods of time. But William uses all three seemingly interchangeably in the span of a few weeks, which is even more interesting given that such a large thought process behind his games was that they were done with less skill and by using what was available. So the fact that he takes the time to individually learn and work with these mediums, likely from scratch is odd, he arguably puts more emphasis on the physical messages than the displays of the ‘game’.
It’s further interesting to consider how he views the ‘Jigsaw Ideology’, he refers to the apprentices as disciples, he discusses the symbolism that John assigned to the Spiral and just the title ‘From the Book of Saw’. Everything is almost painted in a religious light, like the Jigsaw killings are a set of texts to be interpreted with John Kramer as the prophet to be followed. William twists the narrative to fit his own goals in a way not too dissimilar to modern religions, but still acknowledges and tries to uphold the original message.
William has a very peculiar approach to the games, with a lot of them being arguably rigged, especially in the cases of Angie and Marcus. Of course everything he does as a whole is extremely personal, but it’s almost that his more rigged games are those involving people closer to Zeke. He kills every person that Zeke still held (some) trust for, he’s trying to cut all positive ties Zeke has until the only thing left for him is William. By removing the ‘competition’ he is reducing the motivation that would give Zeke reason to reject him.
He also completely rigs Zekes game but in the other direction, he’s trying to loophole the Jigsaw idea that no apprentice is left untested because he has no intention of putting Zeke in a potentially life threatening situation with no way of escape. He doesn’t even make a single effort to fight back in the elevator, only occasionally pushing Zeke away. It’s a deranged attempt at displaying love and affection, he presents this idea that despite all damage William has caused no real physical harm will come to Zeke.
He also is just the most unserious killer in the entire franchise, when Zeke finds him he has a whole table of takeout behind him and spends a portion of the reveal with a takeout box in his hand. He speaks with odd inflections, almost with silly voices like he isn’t committing horrific crimes. He behaves nonchalantly, near petulant at times, pushing the gun away with a scoff, sounding genuinely surprised and offended that Marcus tried to shoot him. His behaviour is not fitting the situation and it’s incredible to watch.
His obsession with Zeke also leads to incredibly hypocritical behaviour, he punishes cops that do bad things but is happy to go along with Zeke as he engages is arguably corrupt and bad police behaviour. He’s so blinded by his devotion that he is willing to ignore what his message is for this one individual.
Also a final note because I need to stop talking now, his pig mask is insanely thick, when you see it on the mattress you can see that it’s a least a centimetre of rubber (latex??). Plus the amount of detail, you see in behind the scenes, is also thick chunks of material. Yes he looks cool but there is no way that he isn’t sweating absolute buckets in that, it’s set during a terrible heat wave too. I’m surprised the idiot didn’t pass out while wearing it.
