ok SO amy conflates the one thing in her life which fulfills any of her wants and needs (victoria being a sister who makes her happy) with being able to fulfill ALL of her emotional needs. because like.

her ability to make friends is hampered by the fact she has the ultimate reason for people to pretend to be her friend

her mom is fucking evil dude

her dad is super depressed and cannot be there for her emotionally

her sister is lowkey manipulative and exploits her

she feels like she has a moral duty to never have any free time

shes gay in a city full of nazis

she doesnt get the escapism of going out in costume anonymously like other capes

her power gets her drone striked if the government ever finds out shes using it correctly

she doesnt trust herself to use it correctly anyway because her mom has hammered it into her that shes evil and has a moral debt

and its agonising because she does genuinely have a desire to do the right thing, because she goes to hospital and helps people despite fucking HATING IT

shes just incredibly mentally unwell and constantly makes the wrong choices

i genuinely think being adopted by new wave was the worst thing to ever happen to her

In reading Worm, Amy Dallon is a character I've learned to keep an eye out for, in no doubt due to the hushed wispers of discourse I'll apparently discover.

My initial impression based on the first few chapters, is just how much she's defined by her power, more than perhaps any other character in the book. She has no hobbies, no interests, no surface-level flavor, her only two character traits are 'sister' and 'healer'. And yet, she is intensely aware of this fact. Those are the only two things she has to her life, and she HATES it. She's not allowed to be anything else.

Only adding to things is the simultanious conflicting messages she's recieving - being regarded as both monster and paragon. Her power is a constantly regarded as a threat to the bodily autonomy of the people around her, a fact she will gladly remind people of herself, but it's an equally invaluable utility. She's a a monster and a saint, but never a person. The only person who offers her any reprieve from this is her own sister. It results on all of Amy's emotional needs falling squarely on Victoria's shoulders, which I can not imagine being healthy.

I wish I could make white people(and not just white Americans) understand how diverse the pre-columbian Americas were. The history, religion, culture, politics was at least as complex as Europe's. There was the full gamut of religions, from monotheists to animists to ancestral religions. There were city building empires, village farmers, nomadic traders, and so many other ways to live. This is all just based on what we know, the fragments left behind and the stories of survivors of an apocalyptic plague. All this before the most extended campaign of genocide in history was waged in an attempt to wipe out those survivors.

Over 500 years spent trying to cut down a whole trunk of human culture.

Do you understand how much poorer our whole species is because of it? Can you imagine where art, religion, and science would be if we still had these vast bodies of knowledge? The stain of the colonial project will never be fully washed clean. We owe more than just the land to those we stole from. We owe them a whole future, a future that could have been brighter for all of us. If only greed and fear weren't allowed to rule this land.

A fun little bit of foreshadowing/character work is that New Wave’s capes all have kinda dorky names that are just normal English words. Except, for Panacea, which is hardly dorky, and is a word that originated in mythology, with all its associated meanings. Even in her name, Panacea stood apart from her family.

And, of course, it represents the pressure placed on her. Lady Photon’s name isn’t a promise. Glory Girl’s name isn’t a promise. Flashbang’s name isn’t a promise. Panacea’s name is. And she ran herself into the ground trying to keep it.

Thinking about this post again here are Nine Possible Amy Clones.

The one who thinks her purpose in life is to atone for all of Amy's guilt. Unwretches Victoria, does nonstop healing, debases herself at the altar of everyone she feels like she let down. Refuses to enforce any boundaries on other people. On track to crash and burn even harder than the original.

The one who imprinted really hard on Riley as a sister figure. So many fun possibilities with this one - do they make each other better? Worse? Is Riley kinda uncomfortable with the whole thing but feels responsible so goes along with it? Do they have weird sex about it?

The one who wants to fix things with Victoria so badly that she tries to reshape herself into whatever she thinks Victoria will accept. Exposing her to Kenzie would either be really good for Kenzie or really, really bad. Definitely gets one of the other clones to give her plastic surgery.

The one who is so distressed by the memories of the original that he transes his gender about it. The one who will grudgingly use his power on the other clones no matter how wild what they want done is.

The one who gets really into gardening as a shard outlet/art project/therapy. Objectively the most stable and happy one and therefore guaranteed to get the least screentime. Princess Shaper's second favorite.
