What Cultural Appropriation is NOT
Cultural appropriation is real and can be very harmful, but Tumblr en masse has grossly misdefined it. Here are some examples of what isn’t cultural appropriation:
- Eating food from another culture - Properly practicing a religion from another culture. - Listening to music from another culture - Reading literature from another culture - Learning a new language - Respectfully wearing clothing from another culture in an appropriate setting, such as overseas, at a cultural event, wedding, etc. - Buying crafts from local craftsman. - Respectfully participating in cultural activities such as yoga, dreidel, and belly dancing - Respectfully wearing or using non-sacred icons or art from another culture, such as Chinese pottery or in some cases, henna. - Trying out instruments and tools from another culture, such as chopsticks or traditional writing instruments
Many people from other cultures are actually offended when Americans try to fight “cultural appropriation”. For example, many Japanese people thought that criticism of Avril Lavigne’s video was laughably ignorant at best and racist at worst. Also, in many countries, Americans who refuse to partake in cultural activities or traditional dress out of fear of appropriation are seen as snobbish and entitled. Additionally, many religions actively encourage evangelization. Saying that religions traditionally practiced by non-white people cannot freely spread has some very racist implications.
Being culturally literate actively fights racial prejudice or ignorance. Taking the time to learn another culture’s history, values, perspective, and traditions makes people better citizens. For example, understanding how various cultures and religions view illness will help me be a better nurse. Cultural competence can only help society, and it prevents genuine, offensive cultural appropriation.
There are definitely some gray areas when it comes to cultural appropriation. Some Christians find non-Christians using crosses in fashion offensive, while some do not, for example. Intent can also carry some significance. For example, someone may fully understand the sacred meaning of the ankh and feel a strong spiritual connection to it. Another person may just think it looks cool. Both wear an ankh ring, but one would definitely not be appropriating while the other has entered a gray area.
Some cultural practices overlap as well. Tattooing has been practiced around the world by many cultures that didn’t come into contact with each other, for example. Meditation has also been practiced around the world. Buddhist mediation is arguably the best known, but nearly every culture and religion has one or more varieties of it. (I personally like the method practiced in Ancient Ireland best, because it’s the only one I personally know that allows one to think exclusively in words. It’s not physically possible for an NLDer to “turn off” verbal thinking, so most other forms of meditation are inaccessible.)
Historically, separating cultures often leads to cultural incompetence, xenophobia, discrimination, stereotyping, and racism. Cultural appropriation is bad, but that doesn’t make cultural segregation good.
hell yes to all of this post.
and I’d like to point out how many times it says “respectfully” or “properly”. this is important, people. read it and understand it.
this post is garbage
Cathy Brennan is on twitter defending the racist police murder of Freddie Gray because “a judge said it was fine”. Nobody should be surprised that the world’s most obsessive transphobe, who’s literally become pals with gay conversion therapy fundamentalists, is also a huge racist, but I’d like to remind you that for a long time this person was described by this site’s transphobic left as simply “a radical feminist activist” rather than an obsessive, harmful reactionary and for all intents and purposes enemy of all oppressed people. Fuck Cathy Brennan and any of her sycophants.
France’s politicians and community leaders have criticised the “intolerable” violence against Paris’ Jewish community, after a pro-Palestinian rally led to the vandalizing and looting of Jewish businesses and the burning of cars.
please please please spread this around, please speak up about this, please let everyone know that this is not okay, please please please protect my people from a second kristallnacht, please
Listen. I love my followers and my mutuals dearly. You know how occasionally I post something like ‘every Jew on this site has a list in their head of who reblogs what and who ignores posts about Jews’? I’m talking about this shit. I have been seeing things on my dash about the situation of Jews in France for over a year, but it’s coming from other Jews 99% of the time. Please stop ignoring this. This is literally history repeating itself and we can’t be the only ones calling it out again.
This is the first I’ve heard of this, and I’m flabbergasted! If you go and read the article it’s even worse; “anti-Jewish violence is seven times higher than in the 1990s, and 40% of racist violence is against Jews, despite them making up just 1% of the population.” I mean, holy crap! I know Tumblr is very US-centric but this definitely needs to be heard about!!
So what’s currently happening at my college (San Francisco State University) is that four very brave students have been hunger striking for the past eight days to prevent our college of ethnic studies from continuously being underfunded and/or being cut altogether. The demands of the college of Ethnic studies are reasonable and the fact that the university president has let the students starve themselves for eight days shows the complete lack of care for students especially students of color. We are one of the only universities to have a college of ethnic studies in the United States.
It’s now day 10 of the hunger strike
@triste-luna
Please share and support this! This is on my campus and people have been going to camp out amongst the hunger strikers. During midnight hours, cops have done a number of things to harass students including turning the sprinklers on and force students to sleep outside instead of in a tent!! We need to protect our college of Ethnic Studies because it is something that has been fought for dearly! If you are in the area and find time on your hands please come out and support us any way possible. The 4 hunger strikers are now on their 10th day of NO FOOD!! However they can drink water, coconut water/ chocolate milk and chicken broth so if you are able to donate that would also be another way to support!
There isn't a famine in Ethiopia right now — and that's great news for the world.
Cop caught on video pepperspraying restrained teen in the face
Please explain how cop’s are innocent? Please explain how this cop was in a life threatening position that he had to mase the handcuffed individual? #Hate it!
What the actual fuck
women’s lust, women’s sexual desire, and women’s sexual fantasies for other women are all good and beautiful and normal and valid. this especially goes for trans women, women of color, mentally ill women, disabled women, and all intersections of women who are especially negatively impacted by society’s oppressive views toward sex, women’s sexual relationships with other women, and women who love women in general.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, 1815-1902 (Social activist, abolitionist, author)
“What will we and our daughters suffer if these degraded black men are allowed to have the rights that would make them even worse than our Saxon fathers?”
Anna Howard Shaw, 1847-1919 (Physician, Methodist minister, president of the National Woman Suffrage Association)
“You have put the ballot in the hands of your black men, thus making them political superiors of white women. Never before in the history of the world have men made former slaves the political masters of their former mistresses!”
Frances Willard, 1839-1898 (Feminist lecturer, founder of the National Council of Women, anti-child abuse activist)
“Alien illiterates rule our cities today; the saloon is their palace, and the toddy stick their scepter. The colored race multiplies like the locusts of Egypt.”
Carrie Chapman Catt, 1859-1947 (Founder of the League of Women Voters)
“White supremacy will be strengthened, not weakened, by women’s suffrage.”
Rebecca Ann Latimer Felton, 1835-1930 (First woman to serve in the Senate)
“I do not want to see a negro man walk to the polls and vote on who should handle my tax money, while I myself cannot vote at all…When there is not enough religion in the pulpit to organize a crusade against sin; nor justice in the court house to promptly punish crime; nor manhood enough in the nation to put a sheltering arm about innocence and virtue—-if it needs lynching to protect woman’s dearest possession from the ravening human beasts—-then I say lynch, a thousand times a week if necessary.”

And here’s why people dont trust white feminism. Look at your roots!
These are the people they want black women to thank for our right to vote like we earned our right along with them. Hell we weren’t even part of the conversation.
Put Susan B.’s and Margaret Sanger’s ass right up next to them too.
Susan B. Anthony, famed suffragette and all-around assface: “I will cut off this right arm of mine before I will ever work or demand the ballot for the Negro and not the woman.”
Margaret Sanger: [in December 10, 1939 letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble of the Eugenics Society re: the Negro Project (meant to sterilize Black men and women)] We do not want word to get out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out the idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.” She supported the Klan openly.
Some helpful context for these suffragettes…they were frequently chastised by Black feminists, abolitionists, anti-oppression activists, etc. but those critiques were suppressed. Even by other countries. It was mainstream bourgeoisie society that painted these bitches as well-to-do and revolutionary, mainly after the fact. Ida Wells after her anti-lynching campaign got together Alpha Suffrage Club among Black women in Chicago, and went to the 1913 suffrage parade in DC. When they arrived, these demon white women told them to stay segregated!!
Ida was on a mission to put white fems and oppression on front street. She took Willard to task for not mentioning anti-black racism and oppression as fundamental feminist problems. When her article about Frances Willard was published in England, Lady Somerset was so livid her pasty ass penned Frederick to get ‘Ida under control’. Why? Calling out a powerful white women’s selective philanthropy?
So…a hundred years later in feminist debate and work, what do we see? White women taking up mad space, asking us to ‘wait’ and ‘stay in our corner’ so THEIR issues and THEIR perspective are most prominent. And that’s why BW don’t fuck with white feminism. In those days as now, it is a direct conflict of interest. We need liberation white supremacy would never willingly allow.
white people are something else
Do white people think pork is our kryptonite? lmao I’ll step over them pig heads and still run up in your street
Poor Bob, slaughtered his family to make a political statement :/
billionaire could give me %.01 of his wealth and change my life while he is virtually unaffected.
0.01% of $1,000,000,000 is $100,000. Which, for some people, is as much as they’d make in five years of 60 hour weeks of labor. And this is one hundredth of one percent of the bare minimum of being a billionaire.
Also, if the billionaire has a decent bank account setup (which, let’s face it, billionaire has), that $100,000 will just come back the next time interest happens. It is a perpetually regenerating $100,000.
With $100,000 I could fix my credit, buy a house in my family’s hometown and a car, drive back there to live, and have a small cushion left over to get me through till I find a local job—which wouldn’t have to be high-paying, mind, since my house would be paid off. If I brought my mom with me, she could afford to quit her three jobs and start collecting on her Social Security. We could live quite well and I might not even have to finish college to get a job with a wage that would pay our bills and expenses. “Life-changing” is no exaggeration.
reasons USA capitalism and especially “trickle down economics” are both bullshit: because they allow situations like this
With $100,000, I could get vaginoplasty, face-zapping, non-terrible health insurance, and a better place to live, and still have enough left over to keep me fed and medicated for, like, half a decade.
even media that is supposedly “proggressive” has no fucking clue how to write asian people
steven universe? fucking tiger mom stereotype whose shy daughter wants to break free!!!! from
((also i get a real weebish vibe from this show which is partially why i couldn’t get into it….
like connie isn’t even japanese and yet she says “itadakimasu” before a meal??? not cute.))
how to get away with murder? yah oliver’s a little cinnamon roll but why is he the hacker genius.
brooklyn 99? again, hacker genius asian episode (and there was one that had a “filipino bieber” joke like ?? ????? ok??)
orange is the new black? this is the show that had an episode titled “ching chong chang” i don’t think i have to explain any further
(there’s also numerous articles about its anti asian racism but you get the idea)
i’ve explained the issues with mulan and bh6 more times than i can count like i honestly should be compensated for this.
i mean it’s really fucking annoying how deep rooted in anti asian racism a lot of media is
even the ones tumblr loves to hail as progressive, the pinnacle of diversity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!! !!!!!!!
and people just ignore it. even asian-americans for whom it’s impossible to even be visible.
like we literally cannot find asian characters that don’t have some glaring stereotype attached to them and i’m done with it.

when people say “i like needy in a relationship it’s cute” it’s just like yeah you like needy in a neurotypical relationship, needy in a bpd or dpd relationship is over the top, needy becomes dependent, needy becomes one sided, needy becomes really fucking annoying. I wish my version of needy was cute, i wish i didn’t have to use every ounce of energy to not come across as obsessive ughhhh it’s so fucking exhausting
Cis people aren’t brave or strong for saying they would date trans people.
Bill Clinton to Black Lives Matter Protestors, “Quit defending drug dealers and murderers, tell the truth.”
Today Bill Clinton was given an opportunity to answer for his administrations mistakes in the 1990′s. Instead of setting the record straight and speaking truth to the oppression experienced by communities of color, instead he doubled down on the attacks. His comments today represent the same racism he used to pass his 1994 crime bill that helped perpetuate the institutional racism Black Lives Matter is speaking out against today.
