Ways I Show a Character is Emotionally Burned Out (Before They Even Realize It Themselves)

I love writing characters who think they’re fine but are actually walking emotional house fires with bad coping mechanisms.

They stop doing the things they used to love and don’t even notice. Their guitar gathers dust. Their favorite podcast becomes background noise. Their hobbies feel like homework now.

They pick the path of least resistance every time, even when it hurts them. No, they don’t want to go to that thing. No, they don’t want to talk to that person. But whatever’s easier. That’s the motto now.

They’re tired but can’t sleep. Or they sleep but wake up more tired. Classic burnout move: lying in bed with their brain racing like a toddler on espresso.

They give other people emotional advice they refuse to take themselves. “You have to set boundaries!” they say—while ignoring 8 texts from someone they should’ve cut off three emotional breakdowns ago.

They cry at something stupidly small. Like spilling soup. Or a dog in a commercial. Or losing their pen. The soup is never just soup.

They say “I’m just tired” like it’s a personality trait now. And not like… emotionally drained to the bone but afraid to admit it out loud.

They ghost people they love, not out of malice, but because even replying feels like too much. Social battery? Absolutely obliterated. Texting back feels like filing taxes.

They stop reacting to big things. Catastrophes get a blank stare. Disasters feel like “just another Tuesday.” The well of feeling is running dry.

They avoid being alone with their own thoughts. Constant noise. TV always on. Music blasting. Because silence = reckoning, and reckoning is terrifying.

They start hoping something will force them to stop. An accident. A missed deadline. Someone else finally telling them, “You need a break.” Because asking for help? Unthinkable.

How to get the most out of editing

              I think most of you know by now that I give feedback on your work for free. I’m also very busy and get a lot of requests, so often people have to wait a while before I’m able to get to their work. So, it’s  worth your while to make it worth your while! Here’s how to get the most out of (any) editing.

1. Give them your “perfect” version

Okay it doesn’t actually have to be perfect, but you shouldn’t have any issues in your manuscript that you’re aware of and know how to fix. It’s not very helpful for anyone to have an editor comment on an issue you already know about. However, if there’s anything you’re aware of but you’re really not sure how to fix, you can definitely ask your editor!

2. Come with purposeful questions

You should know before you send off your work the type of feedback you’re looking for, and some questions you have for your editor. Stray away from the “English class” type questions and focus more on what answers would actually help you in writing another draft. I considered asking my beta readers what title they’d give my piece because I was super curious and didn’t really like my title, but in the end I crossed out that question because as much as I’d like to know, the title really didn’t matter—I had more important things to ask them.

3. Be open to receiving feedback

As perfect and wonderful as you think your piece is, there probably is still room for improvement that you aren’t seeing. Don’t be surprised when your editor gets back to you and doesn’t just say “good job, everything is perfect.” Nick’s manuscript in New Girl is the one exception!

When you do get your feedback, don’t respond right away—let it process until you can seriously consider each note. Ultimately, what you do with your notes is up to you, but there’s no need to argue or try to explain things to your editor.

Writing Notes: Medieval Beasts

for your next poem/story (pt. 1)

Aeriophylon - a bird seldom seen because it flies above the clouds; if it is captured while still young, it can be trained as a hunter, and will stay with the person who raised it without being confined

Barnacle goose - grow from trees; the young birds hang from their beaks from the trees; when the birds are mature enough, they fall from the trees; any that fall into the water float and are safe, but those that fall on land die

Caladrius - an all-white bird that lives in the king's house; if it looks into the face of a sick man, it means that he will live, but if it looks away, the sick man will die of his illness; to cure the sick man, it looks at him, and drawing the sickness into itself, flies up toward the sun, where the disease is burned up and destroyed

Dipsa - a serpent so small it is not seen before it is stepped on, and so poisonous, anyone it bites dies before he feels the bite

Echeneis - a fish, half a foot in length, that clings to ships and delays their passage; when this fish attaches to a ship, even in the high winds of a storm the ship will not move, but seems to be rooted in the sea; found in the Indian Sea

Goldfinch - a bird that eats thorns and thistles

Hercinia - a bird that serves as a beacon for travelers because its feathers glow so brightly in the dark that they light up the path

Isida - a small bird with beautiful green, blue, sapphire and red feathers; it is said that if you remove the bird's skin with the feathers still attached and stick it to a wall, the feathers will continue to change as though the skin was still alive

Jaculus - a serpent that can fly; hides in a tree until an animal passes underneath, and then it throws itself down on the animal and kills it

Kingfisher - a bird that calms sea storms; at mid-winter, when the sea storms are strongest, the kingfisher lays its eggs in the sand on the shore. For 7 days it hatches the eggs, and for an additional 7 days it nourishes them. During those 14 days the sea remains calm, unnaturally for the season. Sailors know that during this time they will not be threatened by storms, and call this the "halcyon days" after the Latin name of the kingfisher, "halcyon".

Writing Notes: Tips for your First Novel

Consider the following when you're writing your first novel (and every one after that).

Develop a habit of writing. Don’t wait for a muse. Write first and inspiration will come.

Create a realistic deadline. Consider implementing a weekly deadline that you can work toward (e.g., one chapter by the end of the week).

Choose a daily word count goal.

Work on a daily schedule. Add your writing block to your schedule (e.g., write every day from 6pm to 8pm).

Take frequent breaks. Don’t attempt to write for two hours straight. Take a short break after every 30 minutes to stretch your legs and refresh.

Create and work from an outline.

Read other books. Don’t stop reading just because you’re writing.

Don’t procrastinate. Write right now. It will never be the perfect time to write a novel. You have to make it happen.

Get feedback from fellow writers early on.
