Yeah, I just wanted to do a JP/JW marathon to be able to watch Rebirth and here we are, following a new ship and loving their fics
More storm chasing!
And herein lies, in my opinion, the problem with the choices made in episode 11 of season 2 and in the final scene of the series: right or wrong, Bix wouldn't have had to make this choice if Andor hadn't distorted Cassian's relationship with the Rebellion.
His character development in Rogue One is built on the idea that he has given himself completely and blindly to the Rebellion. Ignoring orders to kill Galen Erso and forming a squad to follow Jyn to Scarif is a turning point for him, it's the moment when he regains hope in what the Rebellion can mean, even if it means going against the superiors he's always said yes to.
When Andor portrays a Cassian who doesn't want to stay in the fight, who only does so when his hand is forced by someone else, the narrative is lost. If the series that bears the surname Andor in its title really cared about telling the story of its protagonist, respecting Rogue One, we would never have to discuss whether what Bix did was cruel but necessary or just cruel, because the Cassian Andor from Rogue One would never need to be convinced not to leave the fight he's been in since he was a child.
We don't need a final scene showing a baby to break our hearts for the sacrifice he'll make for the Galaxy without knowing what he left behind, because sending the Death Star plans to the Rebellion, even at the cost of his own and others' lives, is the legacy Cassian leaves behind. And he knows it! Which is why he embraces not only Jyn, but death.
Ultimately, Bix's choice is not a painful sacrifice or a thoughtless, selfish act, but a poor solution to a problem that didn't exist.
If you love Cassian Andor, you have to love Jyn Erso, too. Remember how the reason we all like Cassian is because he sacrificed himself for the Rebellion? He wasn't with the shits until Jyn showed up! He was still trying to weasel his way out of it in 1 ABY! There is no him without her!!!!
#you know he actually has no reason to smile#but Cassian did anyway#out of gladness or just because it’s the rare occasion where opened up her past to him doesn’t matter#the dork is stupidly in love (via @grexigone)
“I’d want Vel there for sure. My God, think of Vel’s take on Jyn Erso! I’m sure she’d have some very choice things to say about her. Jyn would light up all of Vel’s irritation”
CAN TONY GILROY GET JYN ERSO OUT OF HIS MOUTH? WE ALREADY KNOW YOU DON'T LIKE HER! MOVE THE FUCK ON!!
He's fully trying to diminish Rogue One's importance so that HIS work can be seing as superior, as a better story to that of RO. And so many people are eating it. There isn't a Andor without Rogue One, his "masterpiece" existists because of George Luca's creation, John Knoll's ideia, Chris Weitz writing, Gareth Edwards' direction and the work of everyone, cast and crew, who worked in Rogue One. It deeply annoys me that he tries so hard to pretend Andor is not tied to any of this, to the projects that came before and made its existence possible, but then turno around and say shit like this.
I just had a lovely exchange with like-minded folks on Bluesky. People notice Gilroy's smug self-satisfaction.
The nice thing is that people can write fanfic that makes Vel and Jyn great friends. Why not?
Quick reminder to the internet that, although Bix had her own important role to play in the Rebellion, it is ultimately Jyn, the last of her family line, with no husband and no descendants, a childless (Tooka) cat lady in space, who delivers the plans necessary for the Alliance's unequivocal victory and catalyzes Cassian’s full self-actualization.
