āHoly shit, you and Uncle Ian?!ā
āKeep your voice down, and watch your fuckinā language, kid,ā Mickey warns, glaring at his student: six fucking years old but already brighter than all the high school kids Mickey tutors during the summer. Fredās one of his favourite students ā not that Mickey will ever say it out loud, because the kidās got a massive ego to go along with that genius brain of his ā but Fred has also always been Freddie Tamietti to Mickey.
Itās not until today that Mickey learns that Fredās father is none other than Phillip fucking Gallagher. He wonders how heās never seen it before: Fredās definitely inherited those big, hooded blue eyes from Lip. But he supposes thereās more of the Tamietti genes in Fred than that of the Gallaghersā, so Mickey isnāt totally to blame for not knowing before.
Plus the kidās always been dumped by his parents here in Milwaukee over the summer to live with his Aunt Oopie alongside the other Tamietti cousins, so Mickeyās never really met Fredās parents. Itās always just Oopie and the noisy kids in the big house.
Something crashes inside said house just then, followed by Oopie yelling, āSAMANTHA, put your cousin down NOW!ā
Mickey snickers as Fred casts a dark look over his shoulder, shaking his head. Kidās always been sensitive to noise. Itās the reason why Mickey is always tutoring him out here under the large tree in the sprawling back yard instead of inside the house.
āItās been chaotic ever since Sam presented early,ā Fred grumbles. āI mean, we get it, youāre an alpha. Hooray.ā
And Mickey does laugh at that. He ruffles the kidās hair.
āSheāll be over it soon,ā Mickey says. Twelve is a little early to be presenting as an alpha, to be honest, and Mickey pities Oopie for having to deal with that all summer, but he guesses there are worse things in life.
Like presenting as an omega in a household headed by a fucking mysoginistic, omegaphobic monster.
Mickey sighs and shoves these thoughts away. When he looks, he notices that Fred is eyeing him curiously.
āYou never told me you were from Chicago,ā the kid says after a while. āOr that you knew my dad.ā
Mickey shrugs. āYou never asked. And to be fair, I didnāt know you were Lipās kid before, either,ā he says.
To be honest, he is surprised that Lip hasnāt put two and two together and figured out that Mickey Milkovich has been tutoring his son over the summer last year. Maybe Lipās grown to be an absent father? Maybe Lip lets Tami handle all the shit thatās got to do with Fred? Or maybe Lip just doesnāt care to know more about the tutor that came recommended from Oopie. Fredās told Mickey enough for him to know that the kidās dad doesnāt exactly mix well with his Aunt Oopie.
(To be fair, Oopie is kind of an annoying asshole, so.)
āDid you grow up with dad and Uncle Ian?ā Fred asks.
Mickey is already regretting telling the kid anything at all. But it was only fair, the kid has to know that Mickey wonāt be able to tutor him face-to-face over the summer like last year. That theyād probably have to do most of it online over Zoom because Mickey has to go back to Chicago to oversee the house makeover before it is to be sold to the Tamiettis.
And thatās just it, isnāt it? The world just has to be this fucking small, hasnāt it?
When Mickey had told Oopie that he and his siblings are looking to sell their spacious childhood home (good fucking riddance) in Chicago, Oopie had in turn told him that little Freddieās dad is actually into this whole house-flipping business. And apparently the dude is doing well, too.
Itās then that Mickey had gotten in touch with Fredās mom over the phone.
Tami Tamietti had been genuinely excited and serious about buying the Milkovich house. So they had talked numbers, and Mickey had liked the numbers. Tami hadnāt low-balled him, so after a pretty short discussion with Colin, Iggy, and Mandy, Mickey had gotten back to Tami with a date and time to go see the place later this summer.
āLip and I will see you then!ā sheād said, before apologising and explaining that Lip Gallagher is her alpha, and that Lip is short for Phillip, but Mickey hadnāt been listening then. Not anymore.
Because then, his Chicago past had caught up with his carefully-constructed present here in Milwaukee.
There is a reason why Mickey rarely sets foot back in Chicago in the past eight years. Heād go back on April third each year to tend to the grave, sure, but he never, ever stays any longer than necessary.
Because he doesnāt want to run into any of the Gallaghers.
And he definitely doesnāt want to run into Ian.
Although he knows Ian doesnāt live there anymore (because despite everything, Mickey still knows enough about Ian Gallagher ā he has it in good authority that the alpha has moved and settled down in New York City), he also knows for a fact that Ian visits the grave, too (the headstone had all been Ianās doing, Mickey knows; back then, Mickey had been too deep in mourning to even think about it, so their pupās grave had been unmarked for a lot longer than is probably customary).
So Mickey doesnāt linger around when heās back in Chicago.
He blinks back to reality. His student is looking at him with wide, worried eyes, his text book abandoned next to him.
Why does life have to be this fucking complicated, anyway?
Mickey regrets telling Fred that he used to know Lip and Ian. He also regrets not having a very good poker face, because Fred had clocked him almost immediately when heād lied and told the kid that he and Ian were just friends, that they used to run in the same circle, thatās all. Heād royally fucked up when heād let slip that he and Ian used to vandalise the dugouts with lewd graffitis as kids, because apparently that had been enough of a hint for Fred to put two and two together.
āHoly shit, youāre him! Youāre THE omega Auntie Debbie always talks about when sheās drunk! Youāre the reason Uncle Ianās still unmated! Holy shit, you and Uncle Ian?!ā ā had been Fredās reaction to it all.
(Itās kind of disturbing, but also maybe a little bit endearing? maybe? ā that the Gallaghers apparently still talk about him and Ian enough that even Fredās heard a bit about it, too.)
āAre you okay?ā Fred asks eventually. Mickey has to smile at that.
The lie comes easily: āYeah, Iām okay.ā
Those big blue eyes consider him for a while.
āAre you thinking about Uncle Ian? Because I canāā
Mickey sighs, sharp and short, through his nose. āLook, kid, if you want me to keep tutorinā you, we gotta set up some ground rules. Rule number one: you never, ever, bring up your Uncle Ian while youāre with me. Rule numbāā
āWhat! But thatās a dumb rule! Thatās fuckinā impossibleāā
āAy, language, kidāā
āābecause seriously, you know that Iām a curious person at heart! Like, if you donāt let me ask questions about this, I think Iām gonna spontaneously combust! Seriously, Mickey!ā
āOh my god, you drama queen!ā Mickey laughs, ruffling the kidās hair again. Fred pushes him away.
āSeriously,ā he says again. āI promise I wonāt ask any impertinent questions!ā
Mickey lifts an eyebrow. āImpertinent? Wow, kid.ā
āCareful, or Oopie might see ya.ā
And although Fred puts on a brave face, he does give the house a quick glance to make sure that his Aunt Oopie is, indeed, not looking out the window.
Mickey chuckles at the relief on Fredās face.
āAight, Freddie,ā he sighs. He canāt believe heās agreeing to this. But he also knows that itās impossible to stave off Fredās questions, and thereās no doubt at all in Mickeyās mind that the kid will not be able to focus on his geometry theorems if his head is filled with questions about his Uncle Ian and his tutorās shared past. āNo impertinent questions.ā
āBut,ā Mickey says, putting up a hand, āI get to choose to ignore your damn questions as I see fit. You can get pretty annoying, no offense, kid.ā
āNone taken,ā Fred says with a shrug. Mickey has to fight the smile forming on his face.
Oh, here we fuckinā go.
After two stillborn babies, omega Mickey Milkovich and alpha Ian Gallagherās passionate but often volatile relationship comes to an ugly, abrupt end. Mickey knows Ian dreams of building a family, a household full of healthy, happy children.
Children that Mickey cannot give him.

Unfortunately, when his estranged father, steel tycoon Terry Milkovich, dies, Mickey and his siblings learn of the monstrous debt that heād accumulated towards the end of his life. When the debtors threaten to harm Mandy and her newborn child, Mickey and his brothers step in and try to find ways to scrounge up enough money to pay off Terryās debts.
This includes selling off several of Terryās properties, including Mickeyās spacious childhood home, to the Tamiettis.
Mickey doesnāt know the Tamiettis.
He hasnāt heard of them before now.
But when he hears that Tami Tammietti and her alpha, Lip Gallagher, will be the ones to live in the house, Mickey finds himself face to face once again with someone he thinks he will never cross paths with ever again in his life:
