very funny to me how marvel and dc both have a prominent 'super soldier' who gained his powers thru testing while in the military but one is a symbol of hope and patriotism while the other is a living manifestation of the dangers of putting guns in the hands of children and sending them overseas to fight in wars they didn't start

it’s incredibly obvious when you look at the responses to war during both characters’ creations why they are the way they are. i mean some people were non-interventionist during WWII, but i find that movement to be a lot less critical of the USA’s global policy and the horrors of war than the Vietnam anti-war movement. that movement is why slade wilson is who he is, a man who joined the army only to be used as a guinea pig and nearly disabled for life after dedicating his life to the service of his country. afterwards he neglected his family so he could go off and kill people, resulting in one son dying and the other having his throat slit. meanwhile, steve rodgers is an inspirational paragon of virtue. yes, he might question the military and the system as a whole at times, but he’s still ultimately a success and a symbol of american greatness.

in conclusion: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU JOIN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY

Deathstroke is a Vietnam War era response to Captain America, and so is the Punisher. Frank was introduced in 1974 and Slade in 1980. Both of these characters are part of a conversation on American cultural responses to the major war(s) of the moment. Reimagining the Punisher as a 'War on Terror' veteran who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq furthers this, as the Netflix Daredevil & Punisher series and iirc Earth-65 both do. Both Frank and Slade watched their kids die in front of them, and in the case of NMCU Frank, it was because of him if not directly his fault, which is also the case with Slade. Pre-Flashpoint Slade, like Frank, also watched his wife die. In the (very bad I hope they retcon it good god) 2022 Punisher run, the flashbacks of his marriage and family post-war aren't happy, and Maria was about to ask for a divorce when she was killed, as Adeline divorced Slade. Both characters, in intentional or unintentional reflection of what often happens with real vets, cannot return to a normal life or be present for their families after their time at war, and they can't let go of the violence they learned in training and combat.

Vietnam and the 'War on Terror' are wars that inspired protest movements and widespread sentiment that we shouldn't be over there in the first place. WWII was, if anything, popularly seen in retrospect as a war we joined "too late". Joe Simon and Jack Kirby famously created the cover of Captain America punching Hitler in the face before the United States had entered a war, when some Americans were in support of Hitler, when this was still controversial (and was, perhaps, an argument by two Jewish Americans that something should be done about this guy murdering Jews). WWII veterans were still veterans, and certainly came back with all the PTSD and difficulty reintegrating and learned violence that later veterans had--but the war widely had popular support, and they were seen as heroes. Steve was and still is an incorruptible good guy in the Marvel universe. Slade and Frank are antiheroes at best.

Slade lied about his age to join the army at 16 (17 in post Flashpoint); Steve tried again and again to enlist even when his health prevented him. The Korean war was Slade's first war, making him just too young to fight in the last war in which the US' participation was widely seen as positive. Both Slade and Steve (after the serum) were ideals, large and blonde and muscular and capable of feats of strength and skill that made them excellent soldiers. And, of course, they were both given super serum. This was the start of Steve's military career and the end of Slade's. The military gave Steve the ability to help people and made him a hero; it chewed Slade up and discarded him. The Marines taught Frank violence and combat until it became his only response to grief.

So, Deathstroke is absolutely inspired by and in response to Captain America, but he's also too similar to the Punisher to be a coincidence. It's really interesting to compare all three characters and also to look at what cultural moment they're responding to and also in turn the response to them as characters, which is of course more than I've done here.

Im putting this in read more because this entire discourse is capitalism brain rotted youth thinking that fanfiction is content therefore the content needs representation rather than the truth that fanfiction is a product of love and effort. This and the whole Ai fanfic thing goes hand in fucking hand of people not seeing fanfiction as more of a Conversation fans have with other fans and seeing it more like just more slop to endlessly consume. Its a numbers game, its a matter of representation in media. And its so fucking sad because ive seen fanfiction going from a fun hobby to either something for the slop machine to consume or numbers to show how much """cultural impact""" your fandom has. Fanfiction never has shown "cultural impact" or which pairing has more fans or which fandom is more populated. Its to show how much people LOVE the source material and want to keep being in conversation with it. Every fanfic is a conversation with the material no matter if its OOC to hell and back or if its in a completely different AU.

Your fellow fanfic authors are NOT content creators they are fans like you and me. Never forget that.
