No, I will not be back today. You must imagine me saying this with the heaviest of sighs and the most forlorn look. I need one more day. Blackthorn Hall is haunted—which I could have told anyone who had bothered to ask, I’ve never known a more obviously haunted place in my life—and none of the little Blackthorns (who I suppose are no longer quite as little as all that) have had to deal with this kind of ghostiness before.

So again, let me commend you for your forbearance in this time of trial. That is not sarcasm, just formal! I really mean it!

To the Greatest Man Who Has Ever Or Will Ever Live,

It will be tomorrow morning. I was meaning to depart tonight, but it is now very, very late, and I have had no small amount of wine, and these are not the conditions by which I would feel quite safe opening a Portal. It will not do me any good to return to St Barth if I show up on top of the Gustavia Lighthouse.

So since I cannot yet sleep, but must, let me quickly fill you in.

The Blackthorns are fixing up Blackthorn Hall—fancy that—and while I understand they are now properly adults, they are still young enough to use a hundred year old Ouija board they found hidden in the walls. Didn’t have a planchette? Not a problem, we will just make one out of scrap without reference to the wood or the ley-lines or any of the— Sorry. I couldn’t help it, it’s such the Shadowhunter stereotype. Leap before you look. In fact, just leap. Leap whenever and wherever.

As it turns out (spoiler alert!) the spirit of the house—at least the restless one—means no apparent harm and is just your standard everyday “ghost looking for its missing bauble to move on” situation, as you’ll see. But I was more alarmed for it being the house in Chiswick. Many generations of Lightwoods lived in it over many years, and there always seemed a dark shadow over the place. In the mid-19th it was the home of, I’m sorry to say, a very bad Lightwood, definitely one of the worst Lightwoods, and after that, well, its fall from grace was precipitous. I cannot say from what time period this ghost might date, but given its reaction to the name “Blackthorn”, I had my worries.

Anyway, by the time I got to the house, Julian and Emma had managed to cause the Ouija board to, you know, magically shatter into a dozen pieces. I magicked it back—note for future reference, easier to magically repair something that was magically broken in the first place rather than with, say, a hammer—and produced a makeshift but actually calibrated and warded planchette. And burned their planchette in a fire. Outside.

It was quick enough at that point to contact the presence in the house, who was indistinct, probably from being alone for the past hundred-odd years. Let me tell you, Alec love, I was worried then. I was worried that this ghost was someone I knew. Someone I cared about, once. It probably isn’t—most of them would have no reason to be ghosts at all, much less ghosts stuck here—but once the thought occurred to me, I couldn’t put it aside. I tried to ask but you know how ghosts are. “I do not now know you,” it said. Great. But did you know me when you were alive? Just “I do not now know you.”

Anyway the thing was peaceful enough. We finally got around to the topic of why he is a ghost—we got enough of a spoken voice to know the voice is male, at least. He spoke aloud, and firmly. I am bound here by a silver band, he said.

Whether this silver band is a ring, a bracelet, a handcuff, the concept of “the ties that bind,” or a group of robot musicians, I have no idea. But it’s normal enough for a ghost to be bound by an object and to be looking for the thing that binds them. I honestly didn’t get a negative vibe from the guy. I’m… let’s say ninety percent sure that it’s not the aforementioned Bad Lightwood, at least. I told Julian and Emma there was no harm in their keeping an eye out for a silver band during their cleanup of the house, but not to worry themselves sick over it. This felt like wise advice at the time, although we had all had quite a bit of wine at that point.

The wine was in fact drunk continually throughout the evening, as there are some salvageable bottles from the cellar—rather amazingly, although I don’t know, maybe Shadowhunters have wine preservation runes somewhere near the back of the Gray Book. And drinking red wine while talking to a ghost just seemed, I don’t know, the right pairing? But of course now I have a splitting headache from a combination of sulfites and light necromancy. I am going to put myself to long-overdue sleep, and then tomorrow at six in the morning your time please tell le garçon I would like waiting for me a café allongé, very hot and a sidecar, very cold. I will then entertain the children for the rest of the day while you, my love, my all, take a nap and join us whenever you please.

(slow burn, it’s a trilogy and the romance doesn’t happen in the first book) TW for a lot of things, it’s about kids from broken homes and the mafia so there is abuse, self harm, murder, police intervention, organized crime, drug use, assault, rehab, all kinds of weapons, manipulation, slurs, etc. The second book has mentions of r*pe (not extremely graphic but it is mentioned a handful of times and there is one semi graphic scene), and torture. It is a great series but it has heavy content and is not light reading if you go in unprepared.)

5. The House on the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune -

This book is now part of the English curriculum). His idea for the art: two flashbacks culminating in the moment Ari finally gives in to his feelings for Dante. I couldn’t resist.

Y'all really seemed to like my Persian stuff post and so did I so here's some more.

Del bastan, del boridan دل بستن، دل بریدن

The translation of "falling in love" in Persian is āshegh shodan. But there are other, more beautiful ways to say it. One of my favorites is dēl bastan, which literary means tying your heart to someone. Del boridan, on other hand, means cutting the ties of your heart from said someone, aka falling out of love. These ones are verbs, so using them will require knowing grammars. In case you do want to use it, I give you some examples. Feel free to message me if it's not enough.

Alastair: man az Charles dēl boridam. (I've fallen out of love with Charles.)

Cordelia: man behet del bastam. (I've fallen in love with you.)

Hamsar همسر

When you say someone is your hamsar, according to the meaning of the word, you're claiming that they're equal to you, that they're worth just as much as you are, and they're... Like you, in a way that makes you very good companions. But unfortunately, you can't just call a very good buddy of yours your hamsar, since it's now used specifically as a word for "spouse". The beautiful deep meaning of the word is still there though, and using it is always a reminder of the high place your spouse has in your life.

Deldār, delbar/delsetān دلدار، دلبر/دلستان

Delbar and delsetān have a close meaning: delbar is heart-taker and delsetān heart-stealer. One can say this one is used in English too; when you fall in love with someone you say they've stolen your heart from you. Except, there are actually words for that in Fārsi (i don't know if there's any in English). Deldār is another, somewhat similar word, meaning heart-possessor. It's a level after delsetān; while your delsetān is just kind of your crush, your deldār have kept your heart and is taking care of it. For the same reason deldār is used as "lover".

Yār / dooost یار/دوست

Both mean friend. Bro, if you may. :) The fun in it is that both are used as lover. The poets, oh, the poets.

Nāzanīn نازنین

So this word means dear, worthy of respect, precious, lovely, beautiful, all that. And it's a girl's name. But it also means someone who has – or more precisely, does – nāz. Now how do you explain that in English, we're going to find out.

Nāz is some lovey dovey thing one might do with their romantic partner. It's when you act in a certain way to show that you crave their affection, knowing they crave to give it to you. It's when you want to be tenderly touched and caressed by your loved one, when you want to hear them telling you beautiful things, and you want them to know it.

When you call someone your nāzanin you're calling them dear, and you're saying if they sometimes want to show how they crave your affection, you crave to give it to them just as much. I guess it's for when you're just so secure in your relationship that you wouldn't mind nāzing for your lover and having them nāz back. (I'm thinking of Malec now.)

Delārām دلارام

Another word for lover (which is once again a girl's name). Ārām means peace, tranquillity, calm. Your dēlarām (=your lover) is the one who gives your heart peace and calm and comfort, with whom you don't need to hurry, to try so hard, to pretend to be better and more, and you can just... be. And when things get hard, they are what you go to to relax. Even thinking about them would ease your mind...

Delbākhte / delshode دلباخته / دلشده

Both are used to refer to someone so in love. Delbākhte means someone who's lost their heart to someone, as if in a bet, as if they've gambled all they'd had and now they've got nothing. Delshode means someone whose heart has gone. As in left their chest, as if they no longer own it.

Bonus: Pronunciation guide!

There are six vowels in Persian:

1. Long a. Whenever you see ā in a word in these two posts, pronounce it like you pronounce o in son or mother or offer, or the way you pronounce a in father or arm.

2. Long u. whenever you see oo in a word in these two posts, pronounce it like oo in ooze or food.

3. Long i. Whenever you see i or ī in a word in these two posts, pronounce it like ee in bee or teeth or need.

4. Short a. Whenever you see a in a word in one of these two posts, pronounce it the way British people pronounce a in bad or sad or mad.

5. Short e. Whenever you see e or ē in a word in these two posts, pronounce it like e in bed or ted or wet.

6. Short o. Whenever you see o in a word in one of these two posts, pronounce it the way American people pronounce oo in book or took.

The consonants are pretty much the same as English, except for gh that you pronounce like French R and kh that's pronounced like ch in loch.

These aren't exactly the same as we pronounce the words but imo they're close enough. Hope you enjoy. :)

Ok so my first language is Farsi and i just wanted to share some of my favorite endearments with you. I like to imagine the Carstairs siblings using these while talking to their men, or teaching these to their men, since both Thomas and James know Farsi but can obviously use learning some extra soft phrases.

Jānam / Jan-e dēlam جانم / جانِ دلم

Jān in persian means life, soul. When you call someone jānam, you're calling them your life or your soul. Jān-e dēlam is another way of using it, and it means "my heart's soul", or "my heart's life". You can use both just to call someone, the way you may call someone dear, or idk, babe. but the way i like it best is for answering someone's calling you. For example:

James: um, Daisy...

Cordelia: Jānam?

James: can you please pass me the sugar?

Which translates to:

James: Daisy?

Cordelia: Yes, My Soul? Yes, The Person for Whom I'm Willing to Give My Life? do speak, Dear Human Being Who I Love Deep Down in My Entire Being? (I'm not making it up it means all this!)

Alastair: Jān-e dēl-e Alastair? (a.k.a: what were you meaning to tell me, You Who Are Alastair's Heart's Soul? You Who Are The Reason Alastair's Heart (=his love, affection, tenderness) Lives Within his Chest?

And this phrase is actually used, and very commonly. I'm not making it up.

Fadāt besham / ghorboonet beram فدات بشم / قربونت برم

Both mean "I'm willing to be sacrificed for you". Commonly used, for when you want to express lots of tenderness.

Doret begardam دورت بگردم

Another way of saying the latter one, but with more ✨ spice✨. Its literal translation is "I would dance around you". That sounds weird in English, i know. But hear me out: you know how bugs can't help themselves getting close to light sources? There's this trope in Persian literature, about The Candle and The Butterfly. The Butterfly is always flying around The Candle, so close, because it's so in love with The Candle that it can't survive being away from it. The Butterfly keeps dancing around The Candle, admiring it. It's a tragic love story: The Butterfly's wings will always burn, flying that close to The Candle, and The Candle will cry tears of wax, seeing its lover's sad end, until there's nothing left of its body, and it, too, will die after The Butterfly. it's used to say i would be there for you, love you, adore you, even if it's going to cause me such a terrible death. It means in my opinion you're worth being sacrificed to.

Golam گلم

Gol is the Persian word for flower. It's so common to call your beloved golam, which translates to "my flower". Flower in Persian literature is usually used as a symbol of lover, since birds seem to be in love with it, and a symbol of beauty, since, well, it's beautiful. So by calling someone your gol, you're telling them they're beautiful and lovely and you love them so much.

Negar نگار

The word itself means a beautiful, artfully done piece of art (usually drawings and stuff like that). But since Persian poets are all a little bit Extra (well, aren't all poets, really?) They started using this word when referring to their lover, and they did it so often that now negar is used as another way of saying "lover", empathizing the fact that said lover is beautiful (and not just beautiful by appearance and looks, since the beauty of art itself, sinks so much deeper than just the colors and shapes you can see at first sight. God, Matthew would love all this). Oh, by the way, the word Negar is also used as a girl's name – not that you can only call your lover your negar if they're a girl.

Sanam صنم

This one's another completely irrelevant word whose meaning was changed by the poets. Sanam means idol. You call someone your sanam when you're so madly in love with them that they literally become your god. (Thinking about Mr. Hozier, huh?)

“Man,” I say flatly.

Simon shrugs. “I was going to say ‘boy.’”

“I’m twenty years old. I could go to war.”

“I’d rather you didn’t.”

“So, you do know you’re dating a man. That’s a start.”

“Yeah, but why are you being serious? Is this important? Is this, like, our second-biggest problem? Me not knowing what colour flag to hold at the Pride Parade?”

“I didn’t think it was a problem,” I say. “But you’re being a real twat about it. So maybe it is.”

Simon sighs and rubs his forehead. I’m glad I spelled his hands clean. “I just… don’t know. All right? I know I’m not straight. And obviously I was whatever I am now back when I was going to all your football matches and hiding outside your violin lessons.”

“But you liked Agatha then, right? In fifth year?”

“Yeah. I suppose.”

“You were attracted to Agatha,” I say over my shoulder, like it’s nothing to me, “right?”

“You’ve seen Agatha,” he says. “Inanimate objects are attracted to her. Trees bend her way.”

“We had sex,” he says. “We dated a really long time.”

“That’s good,” I say, strained.

Simon sounds frustrated. “Is it?”

“Wasn’t it?”

“It was fine, it was sex. Are you done?”

“I don’t know if I was attracted to her…” Simon says.

“You had sex,” I gurgle.

“Yeah, but what does that mean?”

“It was just going through the motions,” he says.

“But surely that means you were attracted to her.”

“I thought I was!” He’s got a hand fisted in the hair at his crown. “I thought I was going to marry her. But everything with “Agatha was just going through the motions, wasn’t it?

I didn’t have to think. I didn’t have to sort out my feelings-

or what did my therapist used to call it, ‘process.’” He kicks the wall hard. There was no processing with Agatha. That’s what I liked about her! She felt like the opposite of dealing with my shit. I never looked at Agatha and thought, How will I ever be big enough to hold my feelings for this person? I felt plenty big enough!

My feelings felt extremely manageable. I’m not sure I even had any!”

“I had sex with Agatha,” he says. Like it’s an apology. “I thought you knew.”

“I did know. Mostly.”

He shakes his head.

“I still don’t know if that makes me bi.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

He knots his hand in his hair again. “Well, it makes me feel like a bloody idiot! Like, I was with a girl for three years, and I still don’t know if I like girls! What the fuck?”

“You don’t have to know.”

“But it seems like I should, right? It seems like I should have a large enough sample size. You didn’t need to sample anything to sort yourself out!”

“Please, Simon. I’m sorry I brought this up.”

He drops his hand.

“All I really know is that nothing I’ve experienced so far compares to you. Maybe that makes me gay.” He swallows. “Or maybe that just makes me yours.”
