the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be a part of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

wolfstar meet-ugly where the only way remus will make his rent this month is if he sells some of his record collection. the man who buys them comes to pick them up and is the most breathtaking man remus has ever layed eyes on - not to mention he obviously has excellent taste in music. except remus can't seem to focus on the adonis in front of him because he's too busy sniffling and trying not to burst into tears while handing off his precious collection that he has spent years curating.

then you have sirius just standing there panicking because of this adorably soggy man in front of him struggling to hand over his records. of course sirius can't take them from him and ends up just shoving the money into remus' hands (along with his number) and taking off without the stack of vinyl (even though there was a limited edition bowie that he was really excited for in there)

me mentally: these characters have a relationship that cannot be defined by any one thing and reaches throughout the narrative and is so woven into their characters that trying to force it under one label would be inaccurate and doing it a disservice.

Okay so yall know how Sirius is the star, Remus is the moon, and James is the sun?

What about Peter? Surely he has to be something other than just ‘the rat’ or ‘the traitor’, right?

I propose that Peter is the earth. I mean, imagine it. He keeps them all grounded and is a very down to earth kind of guy. (the puns were not intended)

He can offer a shoulder to cry on or a listening ear alongside James. He’ll listen to his friends’ (really anyone’s) problems and give advice. He’s a sweetheart and just naturally a kind person. Peter will never be just there to me.

okay imagine after The Prank, Remus starts hanging out with the Slytherin Skittles. He obviously still hangs out with James and Peter, and Lily, Marlene, and Mary, but wherever they are, Sirius tends to follow. So he hangs out with the Skittles. And of course he won't tell them exactly what he and Sirius are arguing about, so he just says it was a prank. A bad prank. A disastrous one.

And it's obviously a new dynamic between the Skittles and Remus. Of course, his friends are fun and free and love pulling off insane pranks, but the Slytherins... they've actually got a bit of crazy to them.

So Barty, my crazy genius, decides that Regulus and Remus should fake-date to get back at Sirius. It's genius -- Sirius's ex-best friend (and still crush that 'no one knows about') dating his brother. Absolutely genius.

And Remus hates Sirius so much -- hates him because he could never hate him, even after what he did -- decides to go along with it.

So Regulus and Remus show up at the Great Hall, holding hands and looking all love-dovey. Barty is giggling so hard he almost gives it away. Sirius is glaring at them from the Gryffindor table, clutching his knife so hard his knuckles are bone white.

But James isn't looking at them at all. And now he won't talk to Remus, either.

Because James has been in love with Regulus for a while now, but he hasn't told anyone. And one of his best mates is holding Regulus's hand, and he wishes so hard it was him instead.
