Louis Faustian deal & Claudia’s turning

So… s2 really revealed something interesting that reframed Louis’s maternity leave & housewife era and his passivity in it for me.

Louis is not afraid to let people know his thoughts and opinions. Even as a human he is brave enough to be a part of white exclusive spaces (but he still has to navigate these spaces as to not be harmed or killed). He stands up to Lestat when Lestat makes microaggressive comments the first time they meet.

We see him stand up to Lestat several times during their marriage before Claudia was born, such as the infamous ‘it’s starting to sound a bit like slave’, the Antoinette & Jonah debacle, and Louis deciding to leave Lestat s1e3…

After Claudia is born this changes… Louis keeps quiet, is passive and takes everything on the chin. So what happened?

In comes the Faustian deal for Claudia with its terms and conditions.

”I'll stay. I'll stay. I'll never leave you ever again. I promise. I'll be happy, for you, for her.” -Louis

As I’ve talked about consent in my series Louis turning and consent, is Louis in any state to consent to such a deal? Hell no.

In both Lestat's and Louis's retellings of events, Louis is having a mental breakdown here, while in both versions Lestat is mentally stable. Lestat is the responsible party in this situation, since Louis is in no state to make any type of deal or give consent.

This reminds me so much of when a loved one who is an addict was in withdrawal begging me to give them what they wanted, Louis isn’t stable. You can’t just agree because they offer you what you want. That’s taking advantage.

Lestat can claim Louis manipulated him, and I’m sure Louis was intentionally very manipulative, but Lestat is the one who has the power in the situation. Lestat made the active choice to take this deal to ensure Louis stayed with him and remained submissive.

Most importantly CLAUDIA CAN’T GIVE CONSENT TO ANY OF THIS.

This is not to say that Louis is innocent in this. He’s not. Louis decides to hide the truth of her turning from Claudia, this is incredibly deceptive and selfish.

“A child interfering in her parent’s affairs.” - Lestat.

What Claudia perceives as passivity is actually Louis upholding his part of the deal. He doesn’t comment on Lestat’s affair with Antoinette while Louis can’t have sex with anyone else. He doesn’t stand up for Claudia when he thinks that Lestat is treating her wrong. He won’t leave Lestat. A deal was made. Lestat expects Louis to uphold his part. And only death can free him.

Or is it? Nope! What’s interesting is that Louis does decide to break this deal. For Claudia. He decides to leave NOLA with her. Part of it is his love for Claudia. Part of it is that I think he feels he is responsible for damning Claudia’s soul.

Claudia doesn’t find out about this deal until the trial, and it reframes her entire relationship with Louis. As it should. Not for the actions he took when he was mentally unstable and “manipulating” Lestat. But for keeping this a secret from her.

For not realizing that the deal was unfair to begin with and for not breaking it much sooner. For allowing himself to be lost in Lestat. Louis has a tendency to keep secrets from Claudia thinking it’s preserving her happiness.. but we’ll get to that some other time.

So let me get this straight, Rolin wasn't satisfied with Louis' reckoning at the end of Season 2. He said that Louis got it too easy, so he undid it and replaced it with a new one this season, which came in two parts.

So what exactly did Rolin replace it with?

Part 1: Louis is told that slavery is in his DNA. It is part of who he is.

Part 2: Louis is tortured by the man who murdered his daughter in a lynching and attempted to murder Louis in that same lynching, spent decades gaslighting him through mind manipulation to hide the truth. And then he carved the initial of his name into Louis' mutilated body. Louis now has to carry that mark for the rest of his immortal life. This is a vampire powerful enough to survive decapitation for hours, yet somehow not powerful enough to heal the brand Armand left on him.

And people will still twist themselves into pretzels trying to defend this when Rolin, Hannah, and co. are not even being subtle. The parallels are deliberate. They're methodical. They want you to notice them.

Louis is told he is, in essence, a slave in the most literal sense of the word, and in the very next episode he is tortured and permanently branded. How is that not obvious?

Let me break it down for you

slavery → ownership → branding → permanent mark

Do you get it now?

This isn't a case of ignorance or some unfortunate, accidental implication. The symbolism is too specific, the order of events too intentional. They knew exactly what they were doing.

This season, Rolin, Hannah, and co. wanted to put Louis in his place. And what better way to do that to a Black man born in America, with deep American ancestry behind him, than to reduce him to the legacy of slavery, to tell him that, at the end of the day, he will always carry that stain, always bear its mark, always be lesser because of it.

really liked what alan taylor said about louis... because that's what my feeling were as well and it's so nice to hear a normal take. it also shows how much the director's interpretation matters to the final result.

one of the amazing things about louis as the character, and one of the reasons why crazy lestat loves him... why we all love him, is he, at bottom, is so deeply empathetic and able to feel and suffer for others. i loved that his first response was "go fuck yourself", which is appropriate in these circumstances, and then when [armand] ups the stakes, he tries an apology, which is sorta what we'd all do if we were trying to get out of the situation... and when it comes down to it, he goes somewhere only someone like louis can go, which i think is to recognize what created armand and probably saying things that armand never heard and probably will never be able to articulate himself (x)
