One Piece Panel Picks - Chapter 350
The advent of the sea train is proof of humanity’s capability to turn dire situations into opportunities for innovation. It’s also heartwarming that such creations are born out of the intention to give hope to an island’s people.
Such was the legacy of Tom, that Franky’s hardboiled edgy expression changed into a profound and mellow fondness when he mentioned the man’s name

A comic (?) about my love of weird little bats for this halloween
I like haunted houses in theory BUT I have no idea how to react when the actors speak to you. They ask me a question and I just… answer it…
The scariest part of a haunted house is the unscripted social interaction.
Scary nurse in a creepy voice: “Do you have an appointment to see the doctor?”
Me: “Uh. Do you accept walk-ins?”
Scary farmer: “I like to kill people!”
My friend, brightly: “I like to die!”
Zombie : “AARRRGH”
Me : “Do you get dental insurance?”
Zombie : “TEETH!!”
This happened to me.
Scary prison dude: HELLO
Me: Nice to meet you!
Him: (pause) No it’s noooooot
My worst horror house experience was when I couldn’t find the (rather obvious) exit and the guy chasing me with a chainsaw stopped, sighed and pointed me to the exit, saying “please scream as loud as you can when you run out there” and just left. I disappointed the horror house chainsaw dude and I will never get over that
Guy: They are all my friends.. (motioning to hanging corpses; then grabs a noose) Will you be my friend? Me: Sure totally, you made me a friendship necklace? Oh my god your so sweet? Guy: … Yes.. Please, let me.. I cant I cant just go (laughing). – Got to walk a second time through– Same guy: My friends -wailing- Me: I came back I just really wanted to be friends so bad Guy: (laughing more) Please, Im not allowed to laugh.
I went to a Haunted House and literally befriended every actor there.
Specifically, I remember;
There were zombies walking around in the waiting room. I said “Hi!” and he gave me a high five. Every time he passed from then on, I got a high five.
Near the end, there were these twin little girls. “Come play with us.” They said. “Okay!” I said. “Forever.” They said. “Oh, sorry, can’t do that. I’m busy.”
I could hear them giggling.
Guy playing Freddie Kruger: Remember, you are all my children!
Me: thanks dad
A small chorus of teenagers: thanks dad
I went to a haunted corn maze once. Someone ran at me with a chainsaw. I just stared at him. He hung his head and walked away. I left.
The Real Horror Is The People We Dissapointed Along The Way
IM CRYING
My friends and I were in a really dark part of a haunted house and couldn’t find the exit, so the guy who had just jumped out at us had to say “to your left” in his same scary voice he’d used to scream and we were like “thanks!”
And then after a few moments of patting blindly at the wall he says again in the same ominous voice “your other left”
if i had seen the transition from sepia to color in wizard of oz in 1939 i would have lost my shit i would've started screaming in the theater
Okay no but like, I am still SO ENAMORED by this transition y’all, ‘cause when Dorothy opens the door of the house onto the colors of Oz, the inside of the house is still sepia toned. And they did that by literally making the interior and the costume and everything SEPIA TONED. You had a double for Judy Garland in a specifically-created sepia-toned dress, in a sepia-toned set, opening the door, backing out of frame, and then the Dorothy that steps back into frame is Judy Garland in her full color costume and makeup, stepping out into the color set.
It’s just
Y’all it’s such a GREAT EFFECT, and this was before computer effects and green screen, it was all practical and yeah it feels like nothing now, but at the time, man, not only was technicolor new, but I’m pretty sure no other movie had done a transition out of b/w or sepia into color, and even knowing it was a technicolor film, that must have just been fucking wild to see! It still is wild to see!! It’s so good.
The technique of switching between double and main actor without an edit is called a Texas Switch and it's still used today, it's very neat to have something so simple yet tricky persist pretty much just because it genuinely looks better to do it with timing than with editing.

I was talking to a bunch of people and when I asked one girl for her name, everyone went really silent, then she whipped out her phone and explained how she’d sold it online for bitcoins, like an NFT.

For no logical reason whatsoever today I am mentally on fire about the camerawork in Midnight Mass. In the artbook they talk about how scenes are mostly filmed handheld initially and then gradually shift to stationary shots as the story gets more supernatural and just…my god is it effective. When Crockett is filmed handheld like a docudrama in the beginning it feels so freakin’ human. You sense that person standing behind the camera, showing you what they see, at person-level height, moving in a person-like way. The Soolaimon sequence also feels filmed with so much love, like a local islander showing off what makes up this little community they call home. Then in contrast, even in the first episode, there are stationary shots, drained of all signs of life behind the camera, and positioned in places no human could feasibly go. Father Paul drags the trunk into the rectory and we move up onto the freakin’ ceiling to watch him tap on it and get a response from inside. What I find interesting about this too is how the instinct of a horror filmmaker typically is to do the opposite of this. Keep the camera steady at first, make the world feel safe and stable, then switch to shaky handheld when the scares happen to induce anxiety and panic. But handheld-to-stationary makes so much more sense here. Highlighting the imperfect, intimate feel of Crockett Island life vs. the surreal way the mind heightens an experience of fear and trauma. The freeze response of fight/flight/freeze. It isn’t a horror story, it’s a love story hijacked by a horror story, and even the camera is a victim to the horror’s influence.
