Things as they stand

So, to keep other posts from getting giant, putting what's been happening here so I can pin this post! If it isn't pinned, we no longer need help.

Currently: Work has cut my hours drastically, and I haven't found something better yet, so we have to ask for help with keeping a roof over our heads again. We may have a living situation that will be much cheaper and potentially better for mine and Nova's health in the works, but it's at least a couple of months out.

What We Need Help With: Keeping roofs over our heads, putting money aside for the moving plans, having money for things like bus and pet food and supplies and laundry.

Nova is officially scheduled for surgery in about a week. There's only one problem: Medicaid isn't covering about 1.4k of the stuff needed to make sure he has a clean, speedy recovery post-surgery.

I'm looking into financing options, but even if I get financing, that's going to be money a month I don't have. So help would be really appreciated, because without the money/financing, the surgery won't happen. And he kind of needs this surgery to happen for his immediate and future health.

It is so weird the snobbish asshole-ish classist way people talk about poor people with pets, especially if the owner is generally a good owner and actively trying to get the pet help. I highly doubt that when that person found a kitten in a storm drain 6 years ago, they knew that it would randomly need a $5,000 emergency urinary tract blockage surgery 6 years later. ‘You should’ve have gotten a pet if you can’t afford it.’ applies to some situations but cats and dogs live 10+ years and a lot can happen in their owner’s financial situation in that time. Pets are not just frivolous sources of amusement for everyone, if you’re barely surviving financially and you’re struggling with your personal life and your mental health, sometimes your pet is the only thing keeping you alive. And we have repeated studies that consistently show that pets are beneficial to mental and cognitive health. There are already so many pets in shelters waiting for adoption, animals should stay in homes where they are loved with people who need them, we should help people keep their pets instead of automatically telling them to get rid of them the moment things get tight.

When I first started warning family members that this was a thing, this was a possibility, I was told that would never happen here, that I was overreacting, that I was making a big fuss about nothing. I was scolded and mocked, even by the family member I considered the most able to recognize this.

I knew there was several possible off ramps from the worst end, the earlier, the better, each a major step above the next, and that it was possible to turn away from this future. I knew it could be avoided.

And to add, I've known this for over 10 years. Knew the different stopping points and how far along we needed to get before we'd move down to a less positive turning point. Then had to spend several minutes torching all my settings with a flamethrower. Let me be clear: I’m (a lawyer) notoriously picky with my words FOR GOOD REASON (lawyering) so I overwhelmingly reject Gmail’s “helpful” little assistance. My privacy settings were set to “full paranoia” a little less than a year ago when I saw the writing on the wall and knew public defenders could become a target in the future. Better to lock it all down now.

Gemini had crept in there and turned ALL that shit back on. And showed itself by saying “Jane Doe says she’s so sorry for your loss and offers to reschedule for Thursday at 3” over an email from Jane Doe saying “I’m so sorry for your loss. We could reschedule for Thursday at 3?”

Why would I possibly need this. In what universe would I need this. I have eyes and a brain and a reading speed that twenty years ago was measured at 1500 wpm with full comprehension on dense scientific text. Furthermore! If I read a summary, I’m not reading what they actually wrote. If I’m not reading what they actually wrote, I’m not using my own judgment on the words and phrases that they used.

I literally don’t understand why this is helpful at all. This is just avoidance. Using LLMs to write is specifically Not Writing. Using LLMs to summarize is Not Reading. Using them to make art is Avoiding Making Art. Just READ! Just WRITE! I was not put on this fucking planet to not read and not write and not make art! Avoidance is an anxiety symptom and indulging it gives it more power.

If I had an AI to do my most dreaded task, answer the phone for clients, I wouldn’t use it. Because an AI cannot help them. An AI cannot hear the facts of their case, make appropriate noises, be thoughtful and insightful, and then give them a realistic estimate of what could happen in court. I am unique. I cannot be replaced by machine learning. I have style. I have expertise. I don’t hallucinate unless I’m having a really great Friday night and I’m off the clock.

When I need to outsource tasks from my own brain, I give them to people I know can do them and that I trust to do them right.

Seriously, the t-rex nightmare was horrifying, despite the absurdity. They modified the t-rexs to have the camouflage ability of cephalopods, and intensely improved sight and speed.

You know how outdoor cats are incredibly destructive to native species, and can play a massive role in extinction of species? And how they don't just kill to eat, they kill to play? Imagine that in these t-rexs.

Imagine 40 ft long monster chasing you down, only to kick you around and bite you. Imagine it can change its appearance to blend in. Imagine it trying to get into a house to just to play with your fragile body. And it's no longer a scavenger. It wants warm prey. It is natural in all of nature's monstrosity.

The destruction was horrible. The loss of life and limb was on a gut-dropping scale.

And honestly it's not the first nightmare I've had like this. Another was a cult summoning the embodiment of war. Not Ares or something reasonable, but War in all its gory senselessness. War that steps through people's bodies and crunches over rubble. War is not sentient, it does not think. It simply hunts. Like fire to cloth it chews through people in seconds.

I couldn't move fast enough to stop it as it ripped through people. The screams were horrible. The children's screams were the worst. And the first to die had been the ones who summoned it, full of their senseless hate and rage, their bodies consumed in the flames of the very thing they summoned, an instance of screaming and then ash.

We are so infected by hate that my heart is trying to vomit.
