The horror unfolding in Afghanistan has led to Dutton saying that he won’t return people on temporary visas back to Afghanistan “at this time.” Bob Hawke immediately offered 42,000 Chinese nationals asylum after Tiananmen Square. Peter Dutton and Scott Morrison have cut the refugee intake and then frozen it, while finding ways to force refugees back into the lands they fled persecution. There’s no security or reliable safety under Dutton. Even one’s entire country being taken over by an extremist militant group only makes Dutton give the vague statement of “oh we’ll figure out your visa at a later date.” He’s obsessed with this permanent limbo of non-responsibility to refugees, whether they’re in indefinite detention or the focus of the entire world during a crisis. No firm reassurances. No action other than “I won’t immediately force you back into danger for now.”
