I was so sure Mike would be canonically gay because in season five he truly seemed ready to be himself for the first time

In the previous seasons it was still obvious to me but I didn't think it would be canon yet because he wasn't ready for it. He was so repressed and so, so scared and he made such great progress in season four but it wasn't enough

Then in season five he seemed as happy as one could be in his situation and the way he interacted with Jane and Will made me think 'oh okay so he's not hiding from himself anymore'

Call me delusional all you want but Mike and Jane should have been broken up, because they were acting like they were (especially in vol 1) and they were both okay with themselves for possibly the first time because no matter how much they cared for each other that relationship was suffocating for both of them and I thought in season four they realized that and actually allowed themselves a final break up

So with that in mind I thought Mike had made the first big step (letting go of the relationship he used to ease his comphet) and of course that didn't mean he'd start screaming from rooftops that he's gay but you know

Turns out I was catastrophically wrong and he's going to die in the closet, in Hawkins, paralleling his homophobic father who has repeatedly (if passively) directed that homophobia at Mike

Fuck this. He shouldn't have been written by cishet men they couldn't possibly understand his complexity
